Area Man Visits Largish Website, Chuckles

A new installment of business and engineering updates from Dave.

On this episode of Building a Bomb, Dave shaves his hobo beard.
On this episode of Building a Bomb, Dave shaves his hobo beard.

You know, it's a funny thing trying to run largish web sites these days. To be honest it's weird just saying the word largish, but that's what Whiskey Media is certainly creeping towards. That's not to say it's REALLY BIG, or HUGE, but it's definitely better than we expected. There is no lack of giddy nostalgia when I look back on how I ended up at what became Whiskey Media--walking into Jeff's house in Petaluma, Mel's Diner for breakfast with Shelby, or farther back to a know-it-all kid that dropped out of college because he was spending too much time building websites. I certainly didn't think this was possible. This silly website, where a group of editors often huddle around a red phone waiting for you to call a number and make the red light blink--in much the same way you guys wait for a new something to pop up on the homepage. No, I certainly didn't see that coming.

It hasn't all been sunshine though. On the business end of the sites we argue like opinionated parents about what you, the collective group of users, want to see and what services we can provide. Should we tell you everything? What if we tell you something that freaks you out so much you run away and never come back? God forbid, what if one of you runs away and gets some girl pregnant. You get the point. There are lots of fights about you. Almost like parents, we try to make the best decisions we can to build a business that's healthy and sustainable and we try not to make too many mistakes along the way. While we have made some mistakes and unpopular decisions, we've always tried to be extremely honest and up front about them and the reasons we made them. A biz dude might even say we've been transparent. Uggh.

Continuing that transparency I'm announcing two fairly major things we're launching on the engineering / business side of the sites that will go into effect for everyone who isn't a premium member later today.

  1. We've partnered with Meebo to deliver their IM chat bar across our sites. This helps us sell high-value advertising that frankly, we have no internal infrastructure to do ourselves. They've been really easy to work with and it fills a gap in our company. As an honest tech company, they've made it easy to hide the bar if you don't like it.
  2. Over the next couple weeks we'll be switching the video player that anyone who isn't a premium member sees to YouTube. This will save us some money on bandwidth and let us take advantage of YouTube's ad sales network, but most importantly it will increase our visibility on YouTube and introduce more people to our sites.

We're excited about both of these changes. I can tell you that one of our main goals for the next couple of years is exposing a larger audience to our unique brand of content. I think we're going to bring a lot of new users to the sites through YouTube, Boxee and Roku that may not have heard of us. The bandwidth off-load for our increasingly mis-named, hour-long Quick Looks is nothing to sneeze at either, but really that's just a secondary win for what continues to be a frugal, growing business. We made both of these deals to help grow Whiskey larger.

Again, if you're a premium member (monthly or yearly), neither of these things will affect you, unless you want them to. They're optional features you can turn on or off as you please in your profile settings page. You can assume this is all a planned attempt to force you into finally subscribing, but our primary motive is to help us grow our largish sites into even largish-er sites.

And that's the funny thing about running largish websites, they always feel small no matter how big they get. We might need a second big red phone next year.

Wait, so do monthly members see Youtube videos too? That's what I got when I loaded up the recent Kirby quick look.

This might make you happy, Dave: I mentioned Whiskey today in my undergraduate research class (I'm doing a research study on web television), and the girl sitting next to me said "Whiskey Media? I've seen their channel on my Roku Box!"

Just a little bit of anecdotal evidence to verify your position that set-top boxes (and, obviously, YouTube) will bring WM exposure. I'm thrilled about the YouTube switch! <3

You asked this girl out, I trust? Surely, she is a good person.

I totally support the video player switch, GB's player always runs up my CPU a lot, but I don't understand the point of the Meebo thing.

Meebo makes me want to kill myself. Worst piece of software I've ever seen on the internet for the consumer. If it wasn't possible to get rid of it I would cancel my membership. Honestly I usually try not to sound like an entitled asshole, but I have a rule on the internet that if a site uses Meebo I stop going to it. I'm in total shock that you guys are using such a piece of colossal shit. Yesterday I thought you were one of the best designed sites on the internet, today I think you're one of the worst just for including Meebo. It's been my opinion for a long time now that Meebo is the worst thing I've ever seen on the internet. I understand you need to make money, but I would have supported anything before Meebo, including human sacrifice... although I'm not sure how you would make money off that.

Whatever dudes, continue to grovel at the feet of your Whiskey Media saviors while they continue to run a fucked up business that can't even function properly. I can't believe they've convinced people that their subscription is a donation that they get "gifts" back from instead of a purchase of a service that one should honestly consider the value of. They are not special, if you think these guys bring anything to the table beyond stupid jokes to their videos and podcast you are delusional. They are slightly amusing 30-something year-old chubby guys that play video games and write about them. They act about how hard and demanding their work is, and bum off you for cash in exchange for watching them do their damned job. I'm not even going to mention the half-assed other websites your dollars go to. I'm tired of supporting this stupid network and I'm going to cancel my monthly subscription that I am ashamed I let renew itself for 2 months. This is my honest opinion, say whatever you want about it. I'm out.

lol. Okay, I get the bit now. I thought you were serious before. You successfully trolled me. I concede.

I don't know how I feel about this; seems like kind of a step back... YouTube ads are far more frequent than I'd like them to be. I'm a subscriber, but if I put myself back into the position of a non-subscriber, I can say the only way I'd be happy(ish) about this is if the YouTube videos were available in HD for non-subscribers. Previously, you guys justified HD for members due to bandwidth, but now there isn't really a good excuse for not allowing non-members that privilege if it's through YT.

If you're going to dump all your videos from the very start on YT and fuck peoples subscriber boxes up. You can't ever expect people to stay subscribed to it.

That's really not the point here. The best way to view their content is always going to be through this site; it's just that the videos will be embedded on the pages here for non-premium members.

Though I totally get what you mean; the past couple of days my inbox has been filled to the brim with Tested and Giantbomb videos. This however is only an initial bump, and will be remedied in its entirety within another day or two at most. They can also upload the videos as unlisted, then make them live after, causing them to not show up in subscription boxes.

Woah, Youtube? But... Youtube is crap and seldomly loads in real time in 480p... That's a terrible experience! Admittedly it means they won't have to see the Dead Island ad every time they want to watch anything anymore (which a guy I link to Giant bomb videos often complains about) but still the experience will be far less reliably good.

I happen to have a youtube account with monetisation enabled and from what I can see they won't be allowed to put ads on their videos since they mostly consist of footage of other people's work with commentary.

This is basically what it says when you want to monetise a video:

Before changing your monetisation options, please tell us about your video. Does your video contain the following content? (Select all that apply)

Graphics and pictures (including photographs and artwork)

Film or TV visuals

Video game or software visuals

Performances (including concerts, events and shows)

Music (including lyrics, cover songs and background music)

Please describe your content below. If you answered "Yes" to any of the above, please make sure that you include details about your ownership of the necessary rights or explicit permission to use all video material commercially. You must possess all the necessary distribution rights for all content (including music) in the video. (1,000-character limit)* (Required)

That's interesting. How is it then, that people like Jesse Cox (OMFGcata), Yogscast or Totalbiscuit can make money (I believe at least TB and Yogscast make a living) when most of their content is based on Let's Plays and QL-ish content? There has to be some kind of loophole or something.

I'm a yearly subscriber, but this concerns me for the non-subscribers:

First, If you're going to offload the bandwidth to YouTube, the least you could do is upload your content in 720p. I understand that this is for members, but non-members who stumble across your content on YouTube are going to wonder why in this day and age you couldn't upload HD video. Seriously. Premium videos and 60fps can be for members - HD content should be for everyone. There is no excuse for not allowing everyone to enjoy HD video if YouTube is carrying the weight.

Second, I'm a little confused on how adding meebo to the bottom bar increases ad dollars. Can you explain how that relationship works? is it because you have meebo that advertisers are more willing to work with you or are you getting ad dollars from meebo? I fail to see how adding meebo adds any value to the sites for users.

Lastly, I subscribe for a number of reasons. I like to support you in general and not see ads. What I would like to see with my subscription dollars is higher production values and more in-depth content. Not Jeff talking to a darkly-lit web cam. Though I appreciate the content in the video (I love behind-the-scenes features) - I think the same video could be shot at the studio with nice lighting. Maybe even a few, whiskey media related, guests. I do however love "Random PC Game", the live Tested video podcast, watching Vinny repair arcade cabinets and so forth.

I hope you read these comments and take seriously not just the thumbs up, but also the thumbs down.

I really dislike youtube or, more precisely, the direction the site took in its more recent development. It is of course still a pretty great site in concept but they have given me nothing but trouble and bullshit when it comes to actually using the site effectively. There is still video content on there that I can't get anywhere else so I still use the site a fair bit to be honest. But GB moving a big part of their content there to be potentially flagged/ censored and all the other shit yt pulls routinely doesn't sound good at all. That being said I have no intention of cancelling my membership anytime soon or at all so I hope for the best.

I understand that you guys need to make money of all of this obviously but I might have freaked out a little bit if I hadn't decided to subscribe a while ago. If nothing else I hope the content won't suffer from yt's bullshit policies that will side with corporate interest first and might consider the user second if we're lucky.

So many subscribers complaining about things they will never see unless they ask to.

As to YouTube, all of the content is already up there. Now, it's just going to be linked onto the site and will hopefully make the site and its player run and load smoother without the heavy traffic killing the server, especially when a QL goes live. I do think upping the resolution on the YouTube videos would be a nice compromise there.

But seriously, I became a paid member because I like your style and want to support a good group of people who aren't like ever other video game source on the internet. At the end of the day, you are running a business and the fact that you are trying to keep advertisements unobtrusive and cutting costs without too much impact on quality for free members is admirable and is a lot more than most businesses would do when trying to make the dolla dolla bills yall.

You know I don't know what you really expected after 2 months of paying for this. It's pretty apparent what the benefits are before even signing up, why are you so hostile to it after paying? I'm honestly curious, because it seems like you could have saved a lot of shame and money from old fat guys who play video games and talk into a mic.

I'm trying to refrain from showing my own opinion and bias towards you, as I actually like old dudes playing games with me (as well as paying for it), but I'm honestly curious what your thought process was initially.

Oh and the site changes stuff is whatever. Can't say I'm excited about it, but making money on the internet isn't as easy people make it out to be.

I'm cool with this, if it helps out the site. Though yeah, I'm really curious now as to how WM is doing financially. It seems like it's barely profitable as a venture, if that. And really, I think you guys need to go back to being just a handful of dudes in a basement if you can't make it profitable at this point, with a very respectable amount of the market share. Having the rest of the WM sites on your coat-tails is not worth it if they drag you to ruin.

Still, I love what you guys are doing with the new content and, well, I love you guys! Keep it running smooth as ice.

I'm also a yearly-er.

I also think 720p to youtube is a good idea. I don't subscribe for HD, I do it for the premium stuff. And meebo helps because THEY work out the ads and such instead of WM having to spend time developing ad deals all the time. And, while I'd also like to see Jar Time be "better made" I don't think WM has the facilities and the staff to devote a studio and a few people to do it "professionally" like that. Also, I kinda like the feel of it being Jeff at his house showing us his poor purchasing decisions and the like.

Regular users don't see the video player on premium videos. They just see text that tells them it's for premium members only. I don't know if it's always worked that way, but that's how it has been for awhile now.

I'm not even going to mention the half-assed other websites your dollars go to. I'm tired of supporting this stupid network and I'm going to cancel my monthly subscription that I am ashamed I let renew itself for 2 months. This is my honest opinion, say whatever you want about it. I'm out.

God forbid them trying to make money on the website that they run! Oh the humanity...

Dave Snider. Your articles are the realest. I love how you guys approach the userbase with these changes.

I think it's a step in the right direction. YouTube is a very flexible and great player, and I don't think any non-subscribers will even be able to tell the difference when it's all embedded on here like any other video.

I wouldn't be opposed to giving non-subscribers access to the 720p video content though. It gives the feeling of professionalism, something I would expect from any video-heavy website in this day and age. It will also reflect well on the website from a newcomer's perspective, giving a great impression of WM's high quality content from the first video they watch.

I don't know how much more taxing it would be on your end, uploading the higher quality stuff to youtube, but you should maybe do a survey among premium members. I think few people would be opposed to the idea.

Anyway, thanks for keeping us all informed like this, duder. The way you guys handle the community is the reason I subscribed in the first place.

@snide:

Dave, I just want to say that I love the transparency this site and the network offers in regards to its users and plans. I really feel like I've had a say - however small - in the running of the sites I subscribe to. Your call-in show, as well as the behind-the-scene looks we get with Jeff's Jar Time (the sequel to Points! :D) and Rorie's Screened making of videos, have been great. Keep it up as much as you can without making things difficult for yourself. ;)

I'd appreciate more info on the Meebo scenario. Perhaps a dedicated post explaining that in future? I can completely see the logistic and financial reasons for switching to YouTube for non-member videos, so I'm on board with that.

EDIT: I notice the site's been a little slow for me lately. Any reason for that? It could just be my ISP. ;)
