Colonel Kilgore was my squad leader in Nam... I saw him skinned alive by guerrilla pygmies & I later purchased a pair of boots sewn from his sternum.

Alrighty then! I just finished with the WET demo; I'm kinda over this whole style of acrobatic trash talking badass with a sword & gun so this game is something that I never really intended to play. Devil May Cry was always my go-to for that sort of thing & even now I can only play those games as a sort of nostalgia piece because I'm so familiar with the characters & the universe. But even though I had no preconceptions about getting wet I was still interested to see that this game was making an effort to include things that made it significant as well as highly stylised in comparison to its flashy, melodramatic ilk.

That being said...

I think this game looks horrible. I saw the quick look when it was released (& in fact just re-watched it now) which inspired me to hunt down the demo in some fleeting urge to see if the game was a bad as the quick look portrayed it. The entirety of my play through I couldn't help shaking the feeling that I was back grinding a PS2 game, Devil May Cry 2 coming to mind immediately for its rather grainy/dirty look & lacklustre action. I know that the whole film grain thing is meant to add to the game's stylish charm & retro aesthetic but there's something to be said for style over substance when your main character's actions jump around as sporadically as Rubi does. I can't help wondering what the point was in designing a game only for the purposes of covering it with a filter that makes it look cheap & nasty. Perhaps the whole air of mystique was lost on me having never seen Grind house or many other movies from the same barrel, I understood completely what they were going for in this game but it’s just beyond me as to why they would go out of their way to stir up hype about what I found to be the biggest flaw in the game. Sometimes pretty games have shitty repetitive game play too but at least there's a visually pleasing aspect to watching your gruff ball-busting protagonist slice things.

My least favourite thing about E3??

Disappointment that the 1 crazy as fuck rumour I've been hanging onto since the last E3 doesn't play out AT ALL!!!!

Maybe in 10yrs as a fun lil DLC Arcade game or something under a wacky nostalgia heading.

"REMEMBER DUKE NUKEM!?"

I don't think at this rate that it will ever catch up to the current state of gaming so why not just focus on debugging it then releasing it as it is.
