Backwards Dragons, Broken Resistances in Skyrim Patch

You may want to wait a little bit longer, if you've been holding off.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s version 1.2 patch is not the savior we have been looking for. Cue the sound of a sad violin.

Bethesda Game Studios issuing patches for its games that end up fixing some things while also conveniently breaking others is not a new occurrence, but what’s being broken with version 1.2 may encourage you to hold off a bit.

I’m not going to hold dragons flying backwards against the game--that sounds (and looks!) awesome.

The real problem is for players who invested into magic resistance for their character, as the patch appears to make all of those now null and void. These even applies to NPCs with innate magical attributes.

The low-resolution texture issue affecting the Xbox 360 version when installed appears to be inconsistently fixed, too.

There’s a message board thread keeping tabs on the reported issues, but Bethesda has not issued an official statement on the matter. When that inevitably changes, I’ll update this story with the company's comments. Report your own issues below.

Should have just played the game before the patch, with or without strange glitches (of which I saw very few in 105 hours) the game is phenomenal.

I never saw anything as dramatic as backwards dragons.

Load and save times (30 seconds to 1 minute 30 seconds) were my only real problem.

Honestly if this wins Giant Bomb's GOTY I will be incredibly disappointed. No game in such a broken state (that gets broken even more with their patch) should even be in consideration.

I installed the patch and things seem more choppy now, but was able to notice the high res textures when I loaded it up. Can't remember if the choppiness was from before or not, but I definitely noticed it more playing today.

I find it comical reviewers still give this piece of shit of a game 10 scores despite the apparent bugs it has, any lesser game would have been bombarded and ridiculed. Yes the game is great as far as gaming goes but the technical quality is unacceptable. We're basically beta testers paying to play the Skyrim so Bethesda could find the bugs and patch since their understaffed and they need us to help them find the bugs.

Yup, I still expect Skyrim to get game of the year. I expect it will happen on PC too despite the numerous bugs and CTDs the game has. It doesn't even look that good except in certain places yet I expect it will get best graphics too. Detail is nonexistent over distances to the point were water and waterfalls just become static white blocks.

So now we have the first big patch that promised to fix the issues and not only does it not fix broken quests and other launch bugs but now it breaks the game in obvious ways that could have been caught by just an hour or so of testing. What happened to reviewing games in the state they are released and not factoring in games that might be fixed six months later?

Still, it's GOTY.

Back to AC: Revelations I go. Looks good, lots of things to do, no major bugs.

Its sad I won't buy games until Steam puts them on sale, generally giving game development houses time to patch things that should have been fixed prior to release in the first place. :(

Also Patrick, the problem now is that even if you wipe your 360 cache to get rid of the 1.2 patch, you're left with a 1.0 game and all your 1.1 savefiles won't work. You can no longer download just the day one 1.1 patch from Xbox Live, because it'll automatically give you the 1.2 patch.

So plenty of people who were previously fine playing the game with no issues, like me, are now fucked.

I think its hilarious how people are stupid enough to put up with this shit from this company. This kind of inexplicable brokenness that is always associated with Bethesda games is simply inexcusable, and the fact that they consistently ship fucked up games or patches that fuck games up even more is just pathetic.

To be fair, most reviewers claimed that this game wasn't as bad as all their previous screw ups, which in itself is debateable because some stuff was pretty busted. Then Bethesda patched it and made it way worse than the others ever were.

I've had no issues. The trick is to know you're playing a Bethesda game and let everyone else make the mistakes for you. It's why I didn't install it on the 360, and it's why I will decline this patch until things get sorted out.

Super buggy mess is still probably the best game released this year.

@Superfriend: Compared to some of their other patches it is pretty good speed. If I remember correctly New Vegas took almost a month or longer to get their first patch out, and that game had some messy bugs on launch.

I'm really torn about this. On the one hand, this is easily the most deep and complex game I've played in several years. I'm pushing 90 hours now and still have no lack of interesting things to do. However, in my time with the PC version I've encountered no less than six GAME BREAKING glitches, as in I was forced to either look up console commands to brute force the game into functioning (far from ideal, causes other issues), or simply live with the bugs/glitches.

For instance, I'm stuck with a bounty for the Markarth region. I've been caught by and paid off my bounty to a bounty hunter, I've surrendered to the guards but they refuse to take me to prison, just chasing and engaging me in dialogue that if I cancel out of they turn hostile. So, I have a quest that, spoiler free, I need to bring a child to Markarth. I found her without even realizing that was the quest and now I'm stuck with this invincible little girl. While it's slightly hilarious to have this kid follow me into dungeons and whatnot, eventually this is going to get really annoying as I have no (valid) option to get rid of her. This only happened about an hour after I stopped playing last, and I'm just dreading having to dig up console commands that will again only half fix the issue.

I also have the apparently common bug with a few NPCs in Whiterun, that keep chasing me just to engage in unavoidable dialogue, much like the guards without the associated crime. The Companions Hall is essentially off limits to me now because of this. Fortunately I picked up shop and moved to Riften, and I've done almost all the other quests in Whiterun, so maybe I'll just write the town off and murder the whole bunch.

That's just the most recent ones off the top of my head, but I've encountered dozens and dozens of glitches all across the spectrum. I understand how massive this game is. They're pushing MMO levels of content. But, to be honest, I'm running out of patience. Fallout 3 and New Vegas were always busted, and had a history of patches that did exactly this, fixed one thing and broke another. So the gut reaction is MOAR QA, but is it that simple? Is there some sort of culture at Bethesda that allows them to put out games in what is essentially an unfinished state? Are there ANY OTHER COMPANIES anybody can think of that routinely release a product like this, so praised for every other aspect but flat out crippled and riddled with bugs? Why do we give Bethesda a pass on this? Can they not simply get their shit together and fix their goddamn fucking games already?!

I love Skyrim, but they aren't making it easy for me. I take comfort in the fact that once the proper mod tools are out, the community can do their job for them and fix what they can't seem to un-break.

Learned in Fallout 3, NEVER download a Bethesda patch day 1. Always make sure it doesn't break the game first. You would think they'd learn to test these things given how many patches they've fouled up in the past.

Time to disable automatic patching on Steam so I can play the game without it being completely busted.

Good luck with that. In my experience, you cannot open Steam in offline mode without first logging in to online mode, and then telling it to go offline. Logging into online mode will automatically start the patching process before you can disable it, and once a game starts updating, you cannot play that game again until it has completed its update, even if it's a single-player game. Some of the biggest reasons why I have never liked Steam, despite everyone else on the internet's infatuation with them. Also, the fact that every time I have to install a Steam update, my settings for automatic patching are reset, so there's no point in even trying to get around that issue. Compounding that with the part where you bought a Bethesda game (I must admit, I have been fooled by them in the past as well), I say again, good luck. :/

The fact that this patch was released and has caused more problems than fixes is a huge error on Bethesda's part and some serious irritation is certainly warranted, but let's not claim this somehow wipes away any and all praise Skyrim has garnered.

Way before the new patch I've had dragons who have attacked me then were flying backwards in an upward spiral as if they were caught in a massive tornado. This kept up until the dragon's model was way out of sight and then he came back like normal so I assume he went as high as the world geometry would allow him.

I installed the patch and played for a few hours last night and it fixed the frame-rate bugs nicely. I still think the game is great. I mean in the grand scheme of things there are so much to this games that it is possible you'll never notice any bugs.

Did I ever say that Skyrim is a terrible game? No. All I said was that with the amount of technical problems this game has I would be disappointed if Giant Bomb gave it GOTY. Especially considering all the other games released this year that were equally great (Portal 2 for instance) that did not launch in such a terrible technical state. The game locked up on both Jeff and Ryan within the first 30 seconds of them starting. There is no excuse for Bethesda continuing to release game after game with all the same technical problems. It's when people continue to look past the stunning technical problems in each and every game they release and then give them GOTY awards that condone this type of behavior.

I'm sure it will win Giant Bomb GOTY though judging from what the guys have been saying in the quick look and on the bombcast. It just disappoints me that Giant Bomb will probably let them get away with it when they would be quick to criticize any other game that has technical problems.
