Capcom Plans Return to Lost Planet

Capcom shouts "welcome to the jungle" and announces a sequel to Lost Planet.

A Three-Man Mech!?!?
A Three-Man Mech!?!?
Capcom took the wraps off of Lost Planet 2 this morning via an announcement trailer that debuted exclusively on Xbox Live. It's an interesting way to let the world know about a game that bypasses all of the traditional methods and speaks directly to the people. It probably shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that a company like Capcom would try something like this, given the way its been talking directly to its customers and fans through an official blog.

But enough about the hows and whys of the announcement itself. Lost Planet 2 takes things out of the snow and puts it into some sort of jungle environment. The announcement opens with the new game's producer, Jun Takeuchi, setting up the clip, then rolls into some edited chunks of gameplay. These clips make the game look like it will handle up to three players in a campaign co-op configuration. This means you'll see players grappling and running around on foot, as well as in the large, armored Vital Suits that appeared in the original game. The footage also reveals some sort of VS that all three players can cram into, with one player piloting while the other two work the weaponry.

The rest of the lengthy announcement goes over some of the facts and details about the back story. The planet from the original game, EDN III, has undergone radical climate change, which explains the lack of snow and presence of jungle. Rather than focusing on one main character, the game sounds like it will bounce around a bit between the different pirate factions taking up residence on the planet.

The game will run on an upgraded version of MT-Framework, which is Capcom's multiplatform engine used for Resident Evil 5, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, and Devil May Cry 4. No platforms have been confirmed at this time, but hey, it's probably a safe bet that it's at least showing up on the Xbox 360, right?

I never got all the way through this game, and I don't know if I'd be interested in a sequel.

Awesome. The first game was damn good. Great art style, fun campaign, pretty good multiplayer. Add in better graphics, co-op, expanded multiplayer options, co-op, a new campaign with jungles and shit, co-op, and co-op, and it should be a hell of a fucking game.

Capcom = Still awesome after all these years.  2009 will be the year to party like it's 20XX.

Yeah the first game was pretty sweet (although the story was admittedly pretty lacking) and the multiplayer was actually pretty fun. Glad to see that enough people played the game to warrant a sequel.

I never played the first but I probably should because this new game looks pretty sweet.  I will probably try the demo first, whenever it comes out.

I would find it to be very funny if it actually wasn't going to be released on the Xbox 360.

Thank god they abandoned the snow. Snow/Ice has to be the least appealing "world-type" I've ever played, all the way back to the NES era.

Now here's hoping the playtesters just love to set their sensitivity ultra-low. Otherwise, I'm never buying another dual-stick Capcom game again. I hope the controls aren't that clunky like LP1. They have enough feedback from the RE5 controls debacle to know what they're doing wrong.

At least the co-op should be interesting.

I loved the first Lost Planet. The single player campaign was okay (good action, poor story), but the online was an amazing experience. Co-op should be a great addition to the series. The first game took a good three months from my life; I'm expecting big things from the sequel.

Never played lost planet 1 but this game looks radically different from what I saw of the original game. I could be dead wrong though.

The trailer has snow in it, so I don't think it'll be all jungle.
I wonder if it will be an xbox exclusive.

It looks awesome, I'm glad they seem to have opted for a more diverse looking environment..

The three player Mech looks cool.

Can't wait. CAN. NOT. WAIT.

I absolutely loved LP, though admittedly, my love was directed toward the multiplayer. I know a number of people who are just as psyched. Bring it on, Capcom.

Lost Planet was a great game.  Can't wait for this sequel.  Why the jungle though?  I kinda liked the whole snow theme.

I played the first LP but I really could not get into it.  The boss encounters were especially silly.  However, co-op possibilities intrigue me so if they can pull it off effectively I might get interested again.

Who asked for a sequel to Lost Planet, really? Besides the Japanese, that is.

Most no one in the west wants a sequel to that crap. We want Megaman/Rockman Legends 3. DO IT CAPCOM.

Good that they're taking it away from snowy environments. Maybe that'll eliminate the time pressure, and make the game just that tiny bit better. Not that LP wasn't great.

Capcom says "welcome to the jungle".

Criterion took us to "paradise city".

Who knows who will complement that "sweet child o' mine"?

All of these developers must have an "appetite for destruction".

I'm kind of excited for this announcement. Lost Planet 1 had lots of unfulfilled potential.

Graphically speaking its one of the best games out there however its always felt kind of clunky and uncontrollable and I hope they'll fix it.

This trailer makes LP2 look pretty awesome. I never played the first game either, but it looked interesting. Even if it turns out to be mediocre, Capcom is still impressing me with all they've done lately.

that's what I'm assuming, I loved the multiplayer on it. I tried playing the single player and hated it for some reason, but this should be pretty epic
