Choplifter HD Recruits Original Creator, Also Coming to Xbox Live Arcade

Dan Gorlin hasn't touched a game in a long time, but he's returning to Choplifter.

It's been a while since Dan Gorlin's Choplifter--1982, actually. That nobody's touched the series since Choplifter III in 1994 is rather remarkable. InXile Entertainment breaks the streak this fall with Choplifter HD, which it today announced is now also coming to Xbox Live Arcade (previously a PlayStation Network and PC release) and is being made in collaboration with Dan Gorlin.

"I am thrilled to be a part of creating a Choplifter experience for the 21st Century," said Gorlin in the press release "The team at inXile is passionate about the game and it shows in every detail."

I've actually conducted an interview with Gorlin that'll be up tomorrow, wherein we talk about the extent he's involved with the game (not much), one of his failed attempts to bring back Choplifter back in the 90s, and why his Wikipedia page says he's currently into real-estate.

If you're not familiar with Choplifter, it's about a helicopter and, yep, you lift stuff.

The game even includes the one and only Meat Boy from Super Meat Boy. Er, how come?

No Caption Provided

"They just asked and showed us some videos and we said go for it!" said Super Meat Boy co-creator Edmund McMillen to me this afternoon.

Because rescuing humans isn't good enough anymore. Now, we gotta rescue sacks of meat.

picking up sacks of meat with a copter sounds very dirty in some way does your meatboy die if you don't pick him up properly or does he get more squishy and break apart when you  are trying to move him? asking the hard questions about meat boy oriented stuff  bring it on

I played the hell out of Choplifter on the Master System. I'll check this out, if only for nostalgia's sake.

I loved me some Choplifter back in the day. I had it for my Atari 7800, of all things. Not the best version at all, but I had nothing to compare it to.

So what if I squish a few hostages? As long as you save most of them it's all good.

The first game I locked up on the Atari 2600 was Choplifter (I can't remember the score), at the ripe old age of 7.

If someone makes a Berzerk HD, the circle will be complete.

At least this Atari 2600 remake (unlike Yar's Revenge) seems to be on the right track about giving the original game & upgrading it. There's a few from this early console time period that might be deserving this aside from making a Championship DX version of Mappy.

Choplifter on the Sega Master System was my Grandfather's most played game, he was a WWII vet and an avid gamer up until the end of the Genesis console.

Fond memories and hopefully this game will be as fun as the original.

Huh, Choplifter. Played this on the Master System quite a bit, never thought I'd hear from this series again. Maybe if this does ok we can get a new Strike game as well?

I remember playing this on my Apple II
Good times. But I'm not sure how it would hold up for even an XBLA game.

Aaaah Choplifter III on the SNES. Good times...hated the sea levels though. That wind cost me a controller.

I like the idea of this game not taking itself too seriously, but also being the most hardcore helicopter cargo lifting sim ever made!!!!

I loved Choplifter as a young lad. Picking up POWs and hostages dropping off at the base... then squishing them as the ran across the battleships deck. Great fun!
