Clarity on Rock Band 3 (Or The Lack Thereof)

Before you get all carried away with your Rock Band rumors, MTV has something to say about all this.

Alex Rigopulos!
Alex Rigopulos!
News came out of CES yesterday with a bit of information about the future of Rock Band. Well, at least, you could take it to mean something about that, I guess. Really, it was more about Alex Rigopulos, the CEO of Harmonix, stating that his posse was focused on the upcoming Beatles game. But since it was in response to something about an upcoming Rock Band sequel, you started seeing headlines like...

NO ROCK BAND 3 IN 2009

Which is absolutely correct. Then it started spinning out to...

ROCK BAND 3 IN 2010

Which isn't what the dude said at all. Then it got to stuff like...

PLAY GUITAR NOW ASK ME HOW

or...

ALEX RIGOPULOS STABBED A GUY IN VEGAS

...or whatever. Point being, people love to take little bits of info and telephone them as far out of context as possible, especially when they come from comments made at a trade show you aren't attending and you heard about the info in question from Geoff Keighley's Twitter feed or something.

MTV Multiplayer spoke with MTV Games and got some actual clarity on the entire situation:
“Alex was responding to a question about potential future iterations of ‘Rock Band‘ and the possibility of additional peripherals. Within the context of that question, Alex did comment that the Beatles game is the priority for MTV Games and Harmonix (but not the only project for 09 i.e. We will continue to release our weekly ‘Rock Band’ DLC, etc. etc. etc.). However, it’s important to note that he also stated to the audience that ‘Rock Band 3′ does not yet even exist as an official project.”
See? Rock Band 3 doesn't even exist right now. I actually think that's pretty cool. Harmonix said back around the release of the original game that it didn't want to get into annual sequels, and here it is, stepping out of the annual sequels picture and doing something different, while regular DLC keeps the core components moving. It'll be interesting to see how the Beatles game turns out, as well as if that "etc. etc. etc." turns out to include kid-friendly building blocks or not.

I hope they wait a while for Rock Band 3. Their weekly stream of DLC will keep fans pleased and revenues flowing. Don't bother with RB3 until it can provide significant changes.

Good, I'm pretty done with buying more music game related shenanigans that aren't DLC, between the horrible misstep that was buying GHWT full kit with faulty drums and squeeky guitar and the fact that I never play it anymore since i got RB2, and buying an ION kit and a rock pedal and oh god someone make it all stop!

Madness.

Good for Harmonix. Too bad that cash cow Guitar Hero is no where near the idea of stopping annual games. Oh right Activision is milking it dry, I forgot.

Maybe now they'll add something. Good thing it is more than one year apart.

I personally wouldn't trust Geoff Keighley's twitter or Geoff Keighley in general.

"Etc, etc, etc" that means a "King and I" edition of Rock Band.  You heard it here first.

I think this is a good move. Meanwhile, Neversoft and Activision will continue to milk the GH series as much as they can.

I will be fine waiting for another Rock Band as long as the DLC content is great. Roy Orbision is great, now we need some Pink Floyd and CHUCK BERRY! Don't ignore your roots!

Bravo to all respective players (Harmonix, MTV Games, ERTS, etc., etc., etc.) for showing no sign (so far) of putting all its efforts into the Beatles game and, more importantly, daring to separate itself from the new evil publishing empire, i.e. Activision.  Judging by the fixes made in RB2 over RB, I say the sudden turnaround is highly justifiable, and now, like others are saying, the game can survive via DLC another 18 months EASILY.  I would not be surprised if this announced game plan is the result of the idea that the economic hardships from 2008 will more greatly influence what holiday shoppers will do for 2009.

Lets just hope Harmonix dosen't like the single-band game, and starts releasing "Rock Band: Metallica" or some such nonsence......

unless it happens to be "Rock Band: Grateful Dead"(Comes with free  Blotter paper!)  which i would be down for...

When I read the headline, i thought that they meant they were going to feature the Jimmy Eat World album called "Clarity" on Rock Band 3. Silly me.

Considering the fact that stores and people's houses are full with either Rock Band or Guitar Hero games and peripherals, it's no stretch to say that this particular market is saturated. I think Harmonix is doing the right thing here. Looking forward to the DLC though.

Hopefully we won't be hearing any more 20 minute discussions on Rock Band on the bombcasts in 2009, those were always the most boring part.
