Diablo III Sells 3.5 Million Copies In its First Day Alone

Can you even imagine the stat numbers for enemies killed and loot collected thus far? In the parlance of Carl Sagan, it's got to be in the "billions of billions."

The server issues that plagued Diablo III's first 48 hours or so were certainly unfortunate, but it turns out that Blizzard really did have a good reason for not quite anticipating the server load it endured. After all, who could possibly have predicted that the game would sell 3.5 million copies in its first 24 hours? I mean, I'm sure we all thought it would do well, but that number is something else entirely.

That 3.5 million number doesn't even take into account the 1.2 million who received a copy of the game through the World of Warcraft Annual Pass program. All in all, that means 4.7 million people were at least capable of playing Diablo III on day one. Which is a lot, really.

All in all, 6.3 million copies have been sold/acquired in the week since the game's launch, which, according to Blizzard, breaks the "all-time record for fastest-selling PC game." I don't have my list of the fastest-selling PC games of all time handy, but I'll just assume that Blizzard did its homework before making that claim. Otherwise, they should be expecting a nasty phone call from Guinness.

Records or no records, Diablo III is unequivocally a massive, overwhelming success, and it's only been a week. I mean, I haven't even bought my copy yet. That's at least one more coming! Eventually! When I actually have time to play it...

I'll wait until they're no longer limiting supply to retail and thus forcing people to buy it from their ridiculously overpriced online store.  Sold out everywhere in the UK and I have a feeling that was intentional. If you need an internet connection to play it regardless, I doubt they expected it to cost them many sales and it guaranteed a larger return from people buying it through their own store.

Once the game is around £35 or less I'll hop on, but not before.
Maybe you didnt read the part where they sold 3.5 million copies. Just maybe that might have something to do with the game being sold out.

And how many clicks were made during those first 24 hours? That's the real question.

A Octillion? A Septendecillion? A googolplex?

People claiming that gamers sold out to DRM need to really get a reality check. The solution of "if you don't support DRM then don't buy the developers games" is a crazy one. And what then? Just not enjoy really good games because they have a shitty system built into them? You think 4 million people worldwide could band together somehow and agree to boycott this game by not buying it because of DRM? That's never going to happen, ever. You can tell all your friends to protest and it'll just be you and maybe 15 of your buds that are just not playing the game while the world around you is hyping it up. Despite the gaming press trying to pawn this issue off on consumers it's they that can actually make a difference. As much as all serious game journalists hate Metacritic they can use it against shitty ideas like this. Score games low because of these sort of restrictions, lower the overall Metacritic scores for titles - publishers will listen to that a lot more than some gamer protests. Yet here we are, the guys at GB think DRM is a shitty idea, yet hey, 5/5 not a big deal. So stop blaming regular folk that just want to play a game and are forced to endure crappy systems and start blaming gaming press that doesn't speak up about in - despite the fact that unlike the everyday voiceless consumer, they get to meet and speak with these game developers on an at least semi regular basis.

You sir, need to learn how to buy games that aren't on steam.

Also, this game won't drop in price (on the blizzard store) for about 2 years, then it will stay at that price forever after.

And another thing! The DRM in this game actually works. You can't pirate the fucker, mission accomplished.

@Ravenlight: This is obviously biased. But in my book Blizzard has done so much good that its very easy to overlook things like DRM.... I would much rather have non hacked saves all over the place.

Now if you want to talk about AC2's single player that is in no way tied to Multiplayer coming from a publisher that is notorious for shitty DRM... then we can talk.

That many copies for a PC game is a game-changer, for better or worse.

If it makes devs/publishers consider making PC exclusives which wouldn't otherwise have been made, then that's great.  If it means games which we'd have been getting anyway will now have always-online DRM shoehorned into them then that's sucky.  If it legitimises a 'release it broken and fix it later' mentality then that would be unfortunate too - nobody should get the free pass Blizzard has been given for that.

Bit of a mixed bag.
So much ignorance in this post.
That's true, but you don't need to be so hard on yourself about it.

This just proves that people couldn't care less for a drm that needs to be always online or, at least, it seems that way. Just keep supporting games that have this type of drm and, in the future, all games, single player or not, will have a persisten internet connection.

Diablo is more or less an online game. It's not like the requirement of being connected to the internet at all times is there simply for DRM, it's to stop people from hacking and ruining the online experience for all involved (and to keep the auction house economy stable). I don't think you need to worry about actual single player games requiring internet connections in the near future.

The amount of paranoia/hate D3 is getting because of such trivial things is pretty silly. If you want to argue that it shouldn't be a requirement, fine, I can even agree to that. But this isn't the downfall of civilization or gaming.

You're exactly right. I've been trying to explain this for weeks. It seems like such an easy concept to understand, but no one gets it. I remember Diablo II when they didn't require that and the online game was completely broken. People look back on it with this sense of nostalgia. I do as well, to an extent. But the game wasn't perfect.

Also, to those who QQ about the "lack of customization in talent builds"; yes, there aren't skill points to dump on skills of your choosing anymore. You no longer have the option of unloading 20 points on frozen orb and 1 shotting everything. That doesn't mean you can't chose a specific playing style for your class. My build is a Ice Wizard. I use Ice spells that feed off of each other for additional dps. Because of the rune combinations and passive abilities, you have multiple build options based on how you want to play. There are multiple right answers, multiple wrong answers. The only difference is now you don't have to make a new character when you screw everything up. Personally, I think it was a wise decision. Most people wouldn't start over again.. They would rage quit.

Yeah, I think a single player mode would have been nice. They clearly didn't think it was a priority though, and you could just as well argue that requiring to be online for Old Republic or WoW is DRM.

This is literally a non-issue.

I don't have my list of the fastest-selling PC games of all time handy, but I'll just assume that Blizzard did its homework before making that claim.

I never claimed it was an issue. Just saying that it's there for DRM, and doesn't really help the multiplayer. You couldn't play your closed battle.net characters in single-player, and that's the system it should've used regardless if anyone thinks it's an issue or not.

Disappointing doesn't mean bad, you know. You noobs(Brad included) should go and play some other dugeon crawlers aside from D2.

Diablo 3 is 4/5. Nothing special. Just another game in the genre.

Direct me to them. I've played plenty of RPGs and only Torchlight is anything like Diablo. Torchlight is a blatent ripoff off of Diablo and it isn't afraid to show it either. Torchlight is nothing more than Diablo without a story or replay value. Don't get me wrong though, I enjoyed playing Torchlight through, but I wouldn't play it again.

I like Diablo because Diablo is Diablo. It's the first game of it's kind that plays anything like it does and that's specifically why I like it. I like other RPGS for other reasons, like Skyrim and Witcher 2 for example.

Like I said though, direct me to these dungeon crawlers and I'll decide for myself. I'm open minded.

Yep my local store ran out of physical copies in a couple of days. Now they have to wait for the next shipment ordered.

Definately the exact magnitude of demand was a bit unexpected. Hence the servers buckling under day 1 rush. Copies are shipped and you expect only a certain % to sell within the first day or week which they undershot.

Self explanatory launch day issues ensue.

Or, you know, they were asking a legit question? The fact that you didn't supply a single name in either the post they were referring to or in your response to them tells me that you probably don't know what those games are yourself. To react so violently to a very simple question that you prompted them into asking by being vague in the first place would seem to say that you don't know what you're talking about and just don't want to believe that Diablo 3 could possibly be a good game (either because you can't afford it, because you don't want to like it, because you can't play it, because you don't see what other people see and it makes you angry, whatever.)

The fact that you don't know which dungeon crawlers I'm talking about shows me that you don't know shit. Shut up. Don't reply to people who say bad things about Diablo 3. Go play your Diablo 3 instead of defending it so furiously.

I know quite a bit about games.. We're all just asking you to simply name a few games as examples. You instead chose to be immature and deflect the question.

You first, douche.

32 posts and a stock avatar and you're telling me to get lost?

Yes, because his post count and avatar are entirely relevant. He better stroke that forum-cock harder or he's never going to get any respect around here.

This is Blizzard we're talking about so your joke doesn't make any sense.

I believe he may be referencing the Activision side of Blizzard.
