DJ Tiesto Claims He's A Hero

Dutch DJ's newsletter claims he's involved in Activision's upcoming and unannounced DJ game.

I dunno, all the DJs I like have way more challenging facial hair than this guy.
I dunno, all the DJs I like have way more challenging facial hair than this guy.
There have been various pointers out there about a supposed DJ-focused music game coming from Activision. The most glaring confirmation still comes from Neversoft's Brian Bright, who said "Activision's doing a DJ Hero game..." back at the launch event for his game, Guitar Hero World Tour.

But just like all the Call of Duty sequel that was name-dropped at an ad conference last week, Activision has yet to make any official announcements, and the company just seems to keep on pretending that no one ever said anything, or that it's all "speculation" or something.

Well, the company probably won't have anything new to add over this latest mention of the game people keep calling DJ Hero. A regular e-mail newsletter sent out by DJ Tiesto--he's a pretty famous DJ, in case you're not into this sort of thing--claims that he'll be involved in whatever Activision's cooking up. British music site NME attributes the following quotes to the newsletter:

"We are proud to announce that has teamed up with the game developer Activision and their latest DJ project. I am very excited about this! I think this is a great way to introduce people to DJing.

"Maybe they realise it's not as easy as they think. I am sure this brings new fans to the scene, dance music is not far from hip-hop for example. Hopefully the music I have composed appeals to all kinds of fans!"

NME goes on to say that representatives for the DJ claim that no deal has been finalized to secure Tiesto's involvement, and that talks are ongoing.

Other discussion of the game's supposed content claims that it will be focused on mash-ups, which seems like a great idea, provided the developer has also invented a time machine that will allow them to release the game three years ago, when mash-ups still sort of mattered.

That sounds like a shot in the dark, aiming for ingenuity; instead, hitting on stupidity. "DJ Hero?" No thanks.

I seriously doubt this will be one tenth as popular as the GH games.  A Drum Hero game might work but are there really that many people that want to try out DJing.  Then again I'm mostly wrong so I'm sure there are people who will buy it

Wouldn't a DJ Hero be a clone of BeatMania or something like that?

I think that justifying a fake turn table will be even more difficult than justifying fake guitars.

Activision has so much money now, they quite possibly might have a time machine.

If you wake up tomorrow and find DJ Hero on the 2005 release calender, don't be surprised.

Could be good. Not in a 'Press button when coloured not appears' format though. Getting to mix your own tunes with some plastic decks would be sweet

I'm fairly certain that this game is actually "Scratch: The Ultimate DJ", it was named on Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursdays Ep. 1 during the Presidential Elections

hopefully this gets konami to just try getting IIDX out in america. they shouldn't even try to localize it, just release them as they are in japan- localizations seem to always make games ultra horrible

maybe ever since the first guitar hero came out, konami should have taken the hint that music games are actually fun....they could have further-popularized beatmania during that time....but no, instead activision is going to get a jump on the whole dj music game experience.

too many missed opportunities for konami...can't help but feel bad for 'em.

anyway, i'm not sure how fun a dj hero game can be considering there's absolutely no multiplayer experience to be gained from it.  as things stand now, music games are all about the local multiplayer interactivity.

If it's anything like DJ Max Portable or IIDX I'll buy it for sure.

When I think about it I doubt it will be that much like those games, they aren't that closely related to DJ'ing after all. I still hope this will be as hardcore music game as those two are.

This sounds really retarted. But being a DJ and electronica artist, i might follow it. I meen if they make it that it scores you on smooth trasitions, effects and on-beat scratching and fast scratching/mixing it might turn out quite cool. Its fucked if its a guitar hero clone though, that aint going to work. Also if you could produce your own music with synths, drum machines, samplers and sequencers i would by it just for that

But his shindigs (lulz) are rave-esque.

He just seems like the overrated "Usher" of the whole trance stuff.

None of his songs would make the top ten of newgrounds music section.  He just seems like that person who you say "yea, tiesto's the best because..uhh... well this guide to techno says we're suppose to like him".
It's mainly because all of the people on youtube who are so gay for tiesto invade happy rave pages and eurotrance (talking stuff like dj cammy, basshunter, etc.)

He's so incredibly average and bland imo.  The fact that he did a Justin Timberlake remix speaks for itself.

Here's tiesto for the clueless who this guy is:

Versus some random people's music  from Newgrounds (granted, slightly different genres, but they appeal to the same people)

and then some more random! (straying further from tiesto)

Well, he's not bad.  But he's just so overrated it's hard to ignore.
I'm just sick of meeting people in real life who I'm astonished they actually like this type of music, only to find that they like TIesto and him alone.

Maybe it's that I don't like his "I'm a preppy pretty boy" look.

it was my understanding modern dj's jobs involve going "make some noise" and switching to another song.
What happened that made dj's so popular in the 90's, i mean, their sole purpose was just to provide music for people to dance to.... and that was it, suddenly they became the most important person in the room, for fading in another song?

cikame, who do you think makes those songs? DJ's! DJ doesn't mean disc jockey anymore... it means electronic musician.

EDIT: Would be cool if I could plug in any class-compliant USB midi controller like my Axiom for this game.

Its more hard style but he does alot of different things.
I am interested on how this game will play. It has potential if you like that style of music.

Hearing this connection between Tiesto and the "DJ Hero" game, it's pretty much all but confirmed to me that this game won't be good.  Not because I don't like Tiesto or the genre he's connected to, but because beat mixing (the foundation skill of all electronic dance music DJing and something good hip-hop party rocking DJs can do) is not something that can be easily simplified.  I imagine it's going to be a complete BeatMania clone with button pushing and licensed music.

There's nothing wrong with BeatMania, I love that game, but it's 10 years later.  I was really hoping that they'd try to do a turntablist game (turntablism/scratching is the DJ art that most closely resembles playing an instrument), but it's clear they're not, since trance/house are two genres where turntablism techniques are not used, and really don't fit those styles of music.

I don't care for Guitar hero much, but that's because I don't like the music. "DJ Hero" sounds super cheesy, but if Tiesto (and his music) is in it... might be worth checking out.
