EVE Online Offers ISK Donations To Japan Disaster Relief

Here's a great way to help out with the relief if more traditional channels aren't your thing.

Starting today, EVE Online enthusiasts will be able to contribute to disaster relief for Japan via game-based transactions. Over on the game’s official blog, developer CCP Games has announced that it will be accepting PLEX donations for “PLEX for Good: Japan,” an initiative that turns game time into real-world cash which is then donated, in this specific case, to the Red Cross. According to CCP’s FAQ, the developer will be absorbing all VAT charges, so the full amount of a donation goes to the charity.

I didn’t know what PLEX was until a few minutes ago, so I’m guessing a couple of you reading this are scratching your heads, too. In a nutshell, PLEX is a game-time card that adds a total of 30 days of EVE Online service to an account. These virtual cards can be traded in-game through the EVE economy, essentially allowing you to exchange your hard-earned ISK for real game time with an actual monetary value. (When you hear about thousands of dollars of real money being lost or stolen in EVE: Online, it usually has to do with the destruction of large shipments of PLEX cards.) The short of all this is that essentially EVE players now have the option to convert their in-game currency to real-world money that CCP will donate to the Red Cross. Pretty cool.

The EVE posting outlines exactly what you need to do in order to make a PLEX for Good donation. I don’t want to mess this up (I'm an EVE virgin), so here’s exactly what the post says:

  • To make your PLEX donation:

    • Contract your PLEX to the "CCP PLEX for Good" character, and please make sure the character is in the "C C P" corporation and that the name is spelled correctly to avoid scams.
    • Contracts will be accepted within 24 hours of submission, though usually sooner than that.

There’s several other ways, of course, to donate cash to Japan, so feel free to do that if you’ve got the time and the extra money. It’s a great cause.

@dagas:   The only thing that could actually happen is contract scams with similar character names, which CCP Im sure would heavily frown upon in this type of promotion.  Usually scams are 100% ok in EVE, but they have cracked down in the past when people scam on things like this.  They wont be shipped, since its going to a CCP employee the contracts can be made at any station the plex is in, and then CCP gets it without having to ship them Im sure.

If you play EVE you know what to do, if you're new to EVE and still want to do it, Contract the plex in whatever station it's in, do not try and fly it to another station, and you'll be fine.  :)

You can't lose PLEX unless you a retard. Also carebears are my favorite snack.

@dvorak So true!

@ Mikemcn There are plenty eve players around.

Well, now it's Blizzard's turn to sell some ridiculously overpriced mount on the pretext of it being for charity when they're only donating part of the money to charity.

Yeah, that's one of the dirtiest marketing tricks in the book.

Using in-game currency to generate real world currency to aid a disaster relief fund? If I hadn't heard it from a reputable source I'd swear it was a joke. Good on them for doing this, as unusual as it is!

In the full write-up, CCP says any scams relating to this donation drive will be struck down with swift and irrefutable force.

@Mikemcn:  So by saying "Eve Online is a fantastic and unique game no one wants to play" you actually meant "Eve Online is a fantastic and unique game no one wants to do more work in than actually play" ? I don't get it.

Besides that, the game is about working. Not playing.

Somebody needs to jack all of a corporation's assets from the inside and give it all to this. They'd be a hero and only assholes would get mad at him.

This is good news for two reasons: for one, it's great that CCP is, like many others, supporting disaster relief, which Japan sorely needs.

The other reason is that this means that there'll be more EVE discussion on the Bombcast, which never disappoints.

On a related note, I've seen commercials and/or have been told I can text REDCROSS 10 bucks 3 times in the last 4/5 years, which is an infinite increase over the years prior. We are truly in the end times.

What would be cool is if these charity shipments were recognized in game and then issued a fleet of ships to defend it.

Hahaha, and that's why I keep playing.

What a great idea though, CCP does have great ideas all the time, it's usually just the execution that comes up lacking.

So this why EVE is infamous for scams and assholes (meaning PLEX). I would assume the CCP character is invincible, if part of the actual game at all.
