Fable III Announced For 2010

Lionhead's revolutionary countdown ends with a "race for the crown."

A bit of concept art for you.
A bit of concept art for you.
Microsoft and Lionhead have announced plans to produce a third game in the Fable series. In Fable III, you'll play as the child of the character from Fable II in an adventure that takes place 50 years after the last installment. The rule of Albion appears to be the crux of the game.

It sounds like dramatic moral choices and sacrifice--things that were also key to the previous game--will be turned up in the sequel. Here's a bit of Microsoft's news release with some more detail:

In this new adventure, you will witness tyranny, poverty, and injustice plague your land. You will see a people divided, and you will be compelled to stand up for change. You will also be forced to answer a question: What would you sacrifice to secure the crown of Albion? Will you uphold the values and principles that led to your ascension, or will you be corrupted by the station you've strived to acquire? Will you be a monarch of the people, or bring the entirety of Albion to the brink of collapse?

"We've spent a lot of time at Lionhead thinking about how we can innovate the gameplay and progress the world of the Fable games for its third chapter, and we're confident that players won't second-guess what we have planned for Fable III," said Molyneux, who also serves as creative director of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa for Microsoft Game Studios. "Though I can't give too much away right now, players should expect to have to make much tougher choices with far wider consequences than ever before in Albion—and with many more interactive adventure elements."

In the epic story of Fable III, the journey to rule the throne of Albion begins five decades after the events of the last chapter, and you play as the child of your hero from Fable® II. As you rule your kingdom as king or queen, you will be called upon to make choices and sacrifices that will test your morality and can affect your entire kingdom. Themes of heroism, leadership, and consequence are taken to a grand scale as you fight to unite a divided people.

Fable III is scheduled for release during the holiday season of 2010, which for some reason strikes me as a little soon for another Fable.

In addition to the announcement of Fable III, Microsoft has also announced that Fable II will be going episodic. This will entail breaking the game up into five installments. Players will be able to get the first episode--which covers the young adult portion of the game--for free starting on September 29. At the completion of an episode, players will be given the option to purchase the next installment or, in some regions, the entire game. "Fable II: Game Episodes" will be fully interchangeable with the disc-based version of the game, so if players start a game in the free chapter then end up getting it on disc, everything will carry over. Pricing for the other installments were not released as of this writing.

Great news.  I'm excited.  If I still have a home left after all the money I'll be spending on games from '09-2010, then I'm sure it will be a safe buy.

The release nor Jeff's article states whether Lionhead Studios is developing it. I sure hope so. And two years does not seem too short a development schedule to me. The engine and mechanics are already in place. Tweak 'em, delete 'em, expand 'em, add new artwork and voice-overs and voi' la! New game. Not every great game needs to be built from the ground up. Nothing's wrong with more of the same, if that same is great. And "same" as in the way mankind is the "same" (we all have two arms, two legs, and two eyes, etc.), not an exact replica. Anyways... sounds good. I'm sure I'll get it.
Oh, yeah! If they make the online co-op work the way everyone wants it to (fully customizable characters), then it'll be a revolutionary (no pun intended) upgrade from Fable II.

@crono11: personally, I really enjoyed the combat, it captured the feeling of being powerful and in control, but also discouraged button-mashing, with an emphasis on timing
but i admit it did not have much depth

You could say it's the Kate Hudson of videogames.

Just remember: This game will be precisely half of what Peter says it is. That doesn't mean it's not a quality title.

Still working my way through II. I've had about 8 or 9 kids so far, so I'm not sure how that will work. We'll see.

Cool. I was curious about Fable II, but wasn't impressed enough with what the first Fable had to offer to try it. I got the impression it was just as over-hyped and under-developed. I'll check this out since it's free.

Also, 2010 won't be that overcrowded since most games originally announced for 2010 will probably be delayed (including Natal). That seems to be the new practice.

With all the 'political leader' teaser images that came last week, I was hoping it would be a new Black & White where instead of shitty old biblical-type miracles, your powers are more "God told me to invade Iraq" style.

Am I the only one feeling the too soon vibe from this game? Like really, Fable 1 was great but 2 was just a disappointment. Does Molyneux really need to wing it and make another game by next year when he should just slow down take his time and make us the Fable we were promised 5-6 years ago. The first even though it didn't live up to the hype it was still one of the best Xbox games ever. Fable 2 had the backing of the 360's hardware and a couple of years dev time and it was a technical mess more so than the first and it didn't live up to any promises.

I played Fable II for about two hours. Maybe I'll finish it about the time Fable III comes out.

Episodic thing seems like an interesting, if a little strange way to get the game out to those who don't already own it. As for Fable III - yay Fable! Presumably it willing be coming out around Xmas 2010?
