Giant Bomb's Game of the Year, 2009

This is it! Our overall pick for the best game that the last year had to offer.

From the deliberate shock and awe of Modern Warfare 2 to Rocksteady's uniquely stylish distillation of the Batman mythos, 2009 was a year that brought us a lot of intense video-game experiences. But none featured more visceral excitement, stunning visuals, and uncontainable momentum than our pick for Game of the Year.

Game of the Year, 2009

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

No Caption Provided
Part of the appeal for Uncharted 2 is that there's no gimmick, no hook--the appeal is that this is a very excellently crafted game experience. It's fun to play and a pleasure to look at. But that's awfully reductive, so let's get into what it is, specifically, about Uncharted 2 that makes it our game of the year.

First off, there's your main character, Nathan Drake. Despite his incredible, preternatural physical abilities, Nathan Drake is no superhero. He is, for all intents and purposes, a dude in a t-shirt. A dude in a t-shirt who just so happens to be racing around the globe in search of an artifact of supernatural significance, juggling an exceptionally evil Eastern European heavy and some duplicitous companions with their own agendas, while dodging a near-constant hail of gunfire, falling buildings, and helicopters. Considering the incredible situation he's gotten himself into, it's impressive that he's able to come off as Average Joe as he does, but it's a key part of the character's appeal, and the game's overall success. That the first time you see Nathan he's sitting on a wrecked train with a bullet in his gut reinforces that this guy is incredibly fallible, which brings a sense of danger to everything he does, despite his actual resilience and the infinite opportunities the game affords you to try and try again. Nolan North, who provides Nathan's voice, deserves much credit for establishing the tone for a character that doesn't quite know what he's doing, but is going to do it anyway, hoping for the best.

Uncharted 2 is also an absolutely gorgeous-looking game, the best we've seen in 2009, which puts it very high in the running for best-looking game of all time. The colorful, exotic environments are rich with detail, and the game's pacing is so relentless that you never linger in one place long enough to even begin trying to pick at it. A combination of performance capture and crazy technology that we have little hope of understanding produce character animation that impresses simply by looking natural in a way that few games would even know how to approach, let alone have the technical skill to actually pull it off. Uncharted 2 aims for a look that's just on Hollywood side of real with its world and its characters, which it pulls off while deftly avoiding the uncanny valley. It says a lot that the game is able to pull of subtle stuff like convincing facial animation and realistic-looking hair just as capably as it is a breakneck chase sequence or a fight with a helicopter.

It's one hell of a production, but Uncharted 2 isn't just about shiny things, it's got a real tactile feel to all of the running, jumping, climbing, and shooting that you'll engage in. And this is all to speak nothing of the game's highly credible co-op and competitive multiplayer modes, which leverage both the strength of the shooting and traversal mechanics which are the backbone of Uncharted 2's single-player experience. Too often do we see single-player games paired up with an afterthought of a multiplayer game, or vice versa, but Uncharted 2 nails it with both, and without ever compromising the tone of the game.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the total package, a crowd-pleasing thrill ride that's incredibly difficult to put down and remarkably easy to recommend without ever feeling like it's pandering to the lowest-common denominator. It's funny, it's exciting, it's beautiful, it's nerve-wracking, and it's our 2009 game of the year.

@jmrwacko: playing it now  after i've read all the hype here on giantbomb.

couple of comments so far. i like it, BUT, it's more from the characters they created and less about the fun of the game play.
game play wise with the climbing, cover and shooting other games have for sure done better.

where Uncharted excels is in its narrative story telling. i like nathan drake, i like his partners and i like the flow of the story.
the story itself is a little cliche so i'm not in any suspense about it, but its very charming.

A+ in avoiding the uncanny valley better than any other game.

only maybe halfway done so my thoughts may change and i may love it in the end, but so far to reiterate its more about a well put together story and characters than intense game play.

makes dragon age dialog look really stiff. if Bioware could harness what they did with Uncharted it would be AMAZING.

I'd say there is one pretty large WTF moment in the game, surrounded by a few smaller wtfs along the way. You'll know what I'm talking about the first time it happens, if you play it, just know that there's much more after that first encounter.

I wouldn't say that set of moments defines the game from top to bottom, but it certainly makes you bug out a time or two. Arkham is basically a fine tuned super hero version of Metroid and Prince of Persia, soaked in a grimy Bioshock-ish aesthetic.

I don't own a PS3 and I don't plan to, so I'll never get to experience this game unless a friend of mine gets it. Too bad. Maybe in five years someone will program a good PS3 emulator.

I don't care about who won but the design of this GOTY awards I thought was a little bit inferior that last year's specially designed pages and layouts, hope for something better next year, instead or a regular article

I'm in the same boat as the The Bomb staff, Uncharted 2 and Arkham are both just kind of hanging out at the top of my list. Depending on what kind of mood I'm in I could flip their placements and put Uncharted 2 at #1 and Arkham at #2.

I ultimately gave my number #1 spot to Arkham for two reasons. One, it's not a sequel, and two, because it's the perfect comic book based video game (on a list of only one). By giving Arkham #1, I vote for its originality and hopefully to put the spotlight on the bar that I'll be judging all future super hero video games against.

Absolutely nothing wrong with picking Uncharted 2 though, it's a spectacular game, I just thought Arkham eeked thru with some very minor, more personal, details.

Exactly. The game is complete down to the last detail. Stand on a building and look off in the distance, what do you see? Not cardboard cut-out houses or a mashed row of copy/paste structures. You see a city, each house unique, with flags blowing and debris rolling. How about the hidden treasures, some that you had to travel completely out of your way for, on new paths designed solely for that optional treasure. Those are few, among many of the ways that this game was truly built to completion. What was said in GiantBomb's article, and the fact that this game was slaved over so tirelessly, and the way it feels as so, is why this game deserves 'Game of the Year' before any other.

Did you even read what I wrote?

What game combines all of those elements?  And if there is even a single game that does, does it do it as well as Batman?

You're nuts. If Uncharted 2 had boring characters, it would suck. What really sold me (and a lot of other people) is the believable and relate-able characters.

In all seriousness, Uncharted 2 deserved it. While Batman was a stellar title, it will forever be coined that "good Batman game", while not necessarily the same as "that good game". It got very high praise, I believe, because it's the first good comicbook game that blew expectations out of the water; if it were just a normal game without an iota of Batman in it, I'm sure it'd be prone to mixed or mediocre reviews.
I highly disagree with this-Batman was a fantastic game in every way, and it wasn't the fact that it was a good Batman game that made it possible candidate for Goty, it's the fact that it is a fantastic game of its own accord. If it wasn't a Batman game, it would completely change. That's like saying if Uncharted 2 had boring characters, it would suck. And whoever is saying that this game is just a 'good Batrman game' will be throttled by my bare hands, lest a mad axe-man gets to him first. "

" Thumbs down for Giantbomb falling over themselves for graphics and presentation and picking a third person, cover-based shooter as game of the year.  Yeah, they had great mo-cap.  So what.  This game didn't REALLY do anything to advance the industry because only a handful of studios are even going to be able to afford that level of voice talent and motion-capture tech.

Batman really brought things back to basics and put together an amazing gameplay experience.  So what if the predator stuff was a little easy?  It was FUN.  So what if there were a lot of gargoyles.  You know what?  I am GLAD they made it all gargoyles.  Would it have been better to put different looking rafters in each area?  They had a gameplay mechanic and they stuck to it, building it throughout the game.   They gave you options if you didn't want to use the gargoyles.  Uncharted was stop-pop-stop-pop, do some climbing, stop-pop-stop-pop, do some climbing, shoot an unarmored boss in the head 77 times, stop-pop, ad nauseum.   It didn't even get harder or develop the gameplay throughout the game, they just through more enemies at you and they took more hits.  There were character arcs, but no gameplay arc.  The most "OH SHIT THAT'S AWEOME" moment took place a third into the game.  Uncharted 2 was a great game because of those production values, don't get me wrong, but they did NOTHING to advance the craft of making videogames, other than show that rich studios now have the tech to pull off some convincing cutscenes and backgrounds to wrap around their trite and tired gameplay. "
Why does every game need to "advance the craft of making videogames"? Why can't a game just be great? Batman is probably more original than Uncharted 2 but UC 2 has just mastered every aspect of its gameplay and presentation. All your complaints of the "gamey" aspects of Uncharted 2 can be in turn applied to Batman. If you boil UC 2 down to "stop-pop-stop-pop" then you can easily boil Batman down to "hide-takedown-hide-takedown" or you could deconstuct the combat to simple button mashing.   And both games deserve better than that. "
I hate this. Both Uncharted 2 and Batman Arkham Asylum are amazing games. And Batman came a very close second. Listen to the podcast. They debate each games merits for an hour trying to decide between the two.
So whats with the hating?
Sit down, grab a controller, and enjoy two of the most polished, fun and generally brilliant games in recent years

Takedowns, grappling hook and gagdets, "detective vision," combat system, sidequests, open world style gameplay, graphical style ... all aspects found in many many other games. Open world gameplay with Batman doesn't make it any less of an open world game with Batman. It's lucky he doesn't have night vision goggles with 3 glowing lenses otherwise Sam Fisher might be annoyed.

There is about as much innovation in the game as there is in Uncharted 2 and whining about the GOTY pick on Giant Bomb just makes you sound like the very people everyone tries to avoid during online games.

Yeah, I don't know if there exists an airtight argument against Uncharted 2 as Game of the Year. The only thing, really, is that you can say the same thing about Batman and Modern Warfare.

Which, when it shakes out, isn't a bad thing at all. It means there were many stellar titles all deserving of high honor in the medium. I've always said that there is a certain threshold of quality in video gaming, a threshold that, once surpassed, forces the critic beyond the realm of objectivity. After a game shows a certain technical panache, then the critic has to involve his or her own subjective opinion about the thing. And, it seems to me, that's exactly the situation we've got going on here.

Again, that situation is fine with me, because it just goes to show how many excellent games were produced this year.

Have to agree with the pick.  My personal game of the year was Borderlands, but I knew it wouldn't be a serious GOTY candidate.

Uncharted 2 is the best choice, I've yet to hear from anyone who's played it say it's anything short of spectacular.  I have heard a few, including myself, say that they just weren't all that into Batman.  I'm just not really into that style of gameplay I guess.   I'm also not personally into Assassin's Creed either, which I consider to be a relatively similar type of game.

Anyway, good choice Giant Bomb staff!  And thanks for another great year of content.

True, but i would imagine if it's your job to review and to cover games that you should try and play most of the top tier ones. But in Drew's case i think he said that he just got his ps3 so it's all good.

I'll agree with there pick the game does look stunning and I keep hearing about it's amazing set piece moments but it is another 3rd person shooter with a cover system and the game doesn't compel me enough to go spent $300 on PS3.

Great choice! Although other games are certainly also deserving in a rather great year of video games, I can't think of another game I'm looking more forward to as a sequel. GOTY is subjective no matter how you look at it, but for me I don't think I've had as much fun playing a video game since playing Sonic 2 as a 10 year old.

For me, the Gears mechanic in UC2 has just been run into the ground, and UC2 isn't bringing anything new to the table in that regard at all.  The background moving around you may make it a better movie experience, but it doesn't advance the interactivity.

Exactly.

BTW, my pick is Batman, but I haven't played AC2 yet.  I'm really looking forward to it.

Uncharted 2 deserved it I think just because of the set pieces and some of the little things.  I mean just think about all of the memorable set pieces that this game has, and I think that is an important part for a Game of the Year Award.  Last year both MGS4 and GTA4 both had some great set pieces.  And I think UC2 wins this year by far in that department.  When you look back at the game of the year, you want that one moment of the game that you can remember right away.  Even during the podcast you could hear the crew remembering some of the great moments that they forgot, because there were so many.

Also, one of the most underrated things for Uncharted 2 was that there wasnt a single load time during the single player after the beginning.  This was very important for me because it was a game for me that I NEVER WANTED TO SET DOWN.  It was one of those classic situations where I said, "just 5 more minutes" and then 3 hours later I wonder where all the time went.  Just the whole pacing of the single player made it the game of the year for me.

@agentboolen: dude. I feel your pain. I want to play this, inFamous, KillZone.... but I already have an xbox and a mediocre gaming PC. I do not want to buy a PS3, but I WANT to.

Called it - which wasn't difficult - but I don't know; there's nothing at all about Uncharted 2 that I couldn't have just gotten from a movie.  Sure, the animation is impressive, and it looks fantastic, but you know what would have animated more realistically and looked better?  Filming a guy.  That's not why I'm into games.  I'm all for that stuff, but I think we often lose sight of the fact that it exists primarily as a vehicle for the gameplay, for the interactivity which defines the medium.  For me, the Gears mechanic in UC2 has just been run into the ground, and UC2 isn't bringing anything new to the table in that regard at all.  The background moving around you may make it a better movie experience, but it doesn't advance the interactivity.

Is the highest praise for a video game really how close to a cinematic experience it is?  What does that say about our medium?  Uncharted 2 as the pinnacle of the gaming year is, for me, a disappointing choice.  I appreciate that it achieves what it's going for, better than any game this year, but I don't understand how we got to the point where that is what we're looking for.

Batman just about edges it out on gameplay for me.  The brawling had an excellent flow to it and a depth which AC1 (which I feel influenced it) didn't have. The problem is - as Jeff said - the game never requires you to explore the depth of that combat system, the lack of challenge reduces it straight back to the level of AC1's combat where you can basically just Wait & Counter your way through it.  It's a weakness that Batman and AC2 both share - there is far more depth and ambition to the combat mechanic than either game ever asks you to understand - the necessary challenge simply isn't there.

I think Batman and AC2 offer equal experiences in a lot of ways, the melee combat and the overall setting and experience is too close to call, they share the same strengths and weaknesses. Where AC2 takes it for me is in the more open parts, where you have a set problem, you know you have abilities x, y and z and are left to handle the problem however you see fit.  The secondary assassinations, where the mission is just "Kill this guy, don't get seen.", offer some of the most satisfying gameplay moments of this year.

Hands down the greatest game Ive played in years. May be the best action adventure game to date. Uncharted 2 single handedly converted  me from a Sony hater to a fan. Absolutely stellar game.
