Go Get The Warhammer: Dawn of War II Beta

The multiplayer test of Relic's new RTS is now free for everyone. Everyone who has a PC and a Steam account, at least.

Available at a Steam near you.
Available at a Steam near you.
Those of you interested in Relic's next strategy game, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II--but not interested enough to pony up for the older Soulstorm so you could get into the multiplayer beta--are now in luck. The official Steam site posted a note that the beta is now free for everyone, as long as you have a Steam account. Just fire up the client and grab the beta as you'd get any game.

Pretty savvy move on THQ and Valve's part. Normally, you'd expect a preorder of the new game to open up the early-access incentive, but instead they wrung a few more sales out of an older game and will still rope in plenty of sales on the sequel. And now everyone can play the game anyway. So go play it.

For those of you who have already been in the beta or have just started playing it today, how does it strike you so far? I'm interested in the game, but then I also keep holding out hope that we'll see the first piece of Starcraft II this year. And I'm not sure I have room in my life for two space-themed real-time strategy games at once.

Thus far it feels like a combination of the original Dawn of War and Company of Heroes, though I'm sure it goes much deeper than that. I don't plan to find out beyond the beta though, my RTS days are done.

Well, Company of Heroes was essentially an extension of what they did in Dawn of War 1, so I would expect that DoW2 feels a bit like a mixture of the two.
I'm so psyched about this game.  We just got our promotional posters and monitor toppers in from iGames yesterday, and the poster is E-P-I-C!!!

I played it but the Warhammer universe still fails to excit me, just feels generic like all Warhammer games do. I wonder if they made a good story but I reckon I'll just be playing Starcraft 2 cause Blizzard create factions and characters you love.

From what I've been hearing, it's actually a bit too dumbed down.  Some of the experienced DoW gamers are a bit unhappy with it.

@PapaLazarou (How the hell do you reply?)

It's a shame that the game developers consistently fail to deliver the universe. Frankly, the 40k universe makes starcraft's look like it was built by a child.

I just think Blizzard created a better universe than warhammer with Warcraft and Starcraft and they do such fantastic artwork and stories I care about. Warhammer just always fails to deliver and all the fake Warhammer fanbois flame you on the forums claiming they've loved Warhammer for 20 years and yet I bet they don't even play Warhammer games.... they just want to like something to spite Blizzard's popularity.

It's a mix and mash of CoH and the old DoW system, but somewhat simplified. The hardcore competitive audience is a bit peeved off, and even the casual or noob player can spot a few imbalances, but it is still the beta. I've been having some great fun with it so far and once you master a race you just stomp everyone in multiplayer. No one has really beaten my new Eldar strategy yet.

I disagree the game is dumbed down. I think certain aspects have been simplified to put the focus on the action rather than the economy. They just shifted focus onto something else.

It's more about tactics rather than strategy. Too micro heavy for my taste....yes...regardless of what Relic says..this game is micro heavy in the part you control different squads and move them around etc...

Yeah, but I don't like it. Neither does DoW2 appeal to me, a lack of content is a bit :( What I enjoyed was the large scale of DoW1, and that seems to be gone from 2.

Steam sucks because it makes it impossible to steal game developer's hard work.

I got it off steam... double-clicked on the icon... and then from the logo there was stuttering. The intro was stuttering, the menu was stuttering; it was horrible.

I then went to the community site of dawnofwar2 and it was said there was a problem with AMD dual core timing thing... WTF. What a pain. This is a conspiracy, C-O-N-spiracy. :)

Had the beta a while (becuase I owned a copy of Soulstorm), and I personally I hate what they've done with it, got into a online match (and I have all the DoW expansions and addons to date) and was completly shocked with the way they've changed everything. Didn't have a clue what was going on and never went back.

This was a very smart move on the devs part. I'll be starting up this download tonight.

Oh, and for all the nay-sayers dissin' Warhammer....do yourself a favor and research the history of both games, and find out that Games Workshop was going to work with Blizzard on the original Warcraft, but backed out because of Blizzard's poor quality.

And as far as WAR vs WoW goes: I'm glad Bliizard's game is so popular with ya'll. It keeps most of the jerks, gold farmers, and 14-year olds out of my game. And do a google image search for Chaos Chosen in Warhammer Online. Blizzard's character models ain't got nothing on that...and don't even get me started with Blizz's lame-ass PvP.

Definitely a sweet game.  For those of you who are saying "I'm waiting till stacraft 2" or whatever, you're kind of doing yourself a disservice.  The two games are QUITE different.  It's definitely worth your time to play this one.

I've been playing the dow2 beta for the last two days. Its an awesome game, more so than I expected it to be. Granted my opinion may come off biased as I was a huge dow1 fan, regardless I think they've improved on every aspect of the original. The new tactical gameplay focus is much nicer than the old school 'build base + tank rush* style of play, I like it a heck of alot more.  The learning curve felt a little intimidating at first as I was getting owned constantly but after a couple of minutes of getting used to how things function it soon became the awesome experience I was hoping for.  The graphics are incredible, the sound amazing and the trademark unit deaths are as hilarious as ever.  While I am equally as excited for Starcraft 2 I'm now 100% certain the games will play and feel very different from one and other so I just have to pick up both, I'd advise every other rts fan to do the same.

I'm a fan of both SC2 and DoW but i tend to lean more to DoW mainly because I like the series more (does not mean that SC2 is an inferior game).  Oh and I don't want to pay for a game 3 times for the full experience (silly move in my opinion tho they will still make a lot of money simply because the fans let them really).  Also, I'm more of a diablo person when it comes to blizzard games hehehe.

played the beta... this game is really bad. for a game all about unit management, there certainly isn't much management going on. not to mention every unit moves at half an inch a second. boring.
