GTA4.2 Definitely Out in '08

Downloadable something-or-other will let you continue your criminal misadventures in the next one to four months.

Expansion needs more Brucie.
Expansion needs more Brucie.
IGN UK went and got a quick comment out of Microsoft over in Leipzig that, yes, the downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV will indeed be out this year. In "autumn," precisely, which I believe is better known as "fall." Wait, when is the equinox again? Let me pull out my trusty Google here...

Apparently fall starts on September 23. Hey, that's soon. That's next month!

What surprises me is Game|Life's speculation that this Microsoft exclusive is for-a-limited-time-only and that the expansion, or new episode, or whatever the hell it is will eventually hit the PS3 as well. I'm sure Rockstar loves money as much as anyone, and releasing on multiple platforms is obviously the way of things these days, but I was under the impression Microsoft had sufficiently bought off Take Two to make this a permanent 360-only bonus. Then again, you might have said the same thing about BioShock last year, and look how that's turning out.

I'm really curious to see how much work Rockstar puts into this thing. What do you expect out of a GTA4 downloadable content package? New characters, missions? Voiceovers? A whole new Liberty City borough? And how much would you pay for it?

Last time I checked, Rockstar said there would probably be downloadable content for the PS3, but they never said it would get the same content. Given that MS paid for it, I really doubt the PS3 would get the two "episodes" the 360 gets.

Also, last release date(though not really a date) I heard was November 2008 to January 2009, so November seems likely.

I wanna kill Bulgarin.
I wanna save Brucie from ODing.
I wanna have more tv shows.
I wanna have some more Lazlow on the radio.
New cars?
I want to see which ending Rockstar sees as the RIGHT one.

Hopefully this DLC will make GTA fun again. I am talking cheat codes that were missing from 4 (Angry pedestrians, armed pedestrians, anything that causes actual mayhem), tanks, planes, and makes GTA a fucking sandbox game again.

Also, if it lets me tear out Roman's tonsils with an ice cream scoop and shove them up his ass for every time he called me asking to see some American titties or some bull like that, I will willingly pay for it.

If its just more tired, boring cover-based combat where you do a couple hits for some mafia thug, I will pass.

If it has extra missions, a reason to replay the whole game, and fixes the multiplayer I'd pay 20 bucks for it.

Since the content is suppose to be two episodes, I'm gonna guess the total for both will be a minimum of $30. While it would be great to have content to wrap up the story, that does limit who would be able to enjoy the content (I haven't beaten the game myself yet).

What I think is more likely is we might see another island and new missions in the first episode (where this island will fall in the story I don't know. It might have nothing to do with the main plot and could unlock with Algonquin). These new missions will be more like the side missions you run across in the city as opposed to more significant characters. Because of this, while the production quality will be high, Niko will suddenly become quiet. This new island will have a primary plot line you will be following. This one will be the most substantial and most expensive. Because of that, this pack will introduce new achievements for GTA IV. $20 - $30

Episode 2, while not expanding on the single player story still, will instead expand what you can do in Liberty City as a whole. More side missions will pop up across the city. They will also add more side jobs you can do (extend taxi driving beyond the first island and maybe a pizza delivery front for illegal activities). To allow players to enjoy the content at anytime, new characters will be introduced for story purposes. This pack will continue any story elements left over from the first episode, since they will require you to download it for the island or it won't work. This one will be cheaper then the first, but may add more stuff to do then simply adding a new island. However, unless game companies are allowed to divide up achievements threw many packs, this won't add any. $10 - $20

Any future episodes will only happen based on sales. If Episode 1 and 2 are 100% exclusive to 360, a third episode will be made for both systems. It will be standalone and allow you to use it without the first two (since PS3 owners can't download the first two episodes). If its a timed exclusive, episode 3 will happen on both systems, and on PS3 will be released at the same time as the first two. It might be more 'expensive' on PS3 with Rockstar choosing to sell it as one combined pack on PS3. The price will be the same total,  its just entry price will be higher on PS3.

All content will be on the PC version. When and cost I couldn't say. Fingers crossed that Rockstar maintains its relationship with Valve and this will be a Steamworks developed product and have full Steam compatiblity. If not, I hope its a Games for Windows Live game. Mainly so Rockstar doesn't use Gamespy.

With games like Left 4 Dead, Fable 2, and the new Fallout coming, this update will have to do a whole lot to sway me.

Rockstar wouldn't gouge their fanbase, but I think this will end up costing 400-800 MSP's.

N'gai from newsweek has pointed out that Staten Island (Shaolin) was the only borough not represented in the game. I'm guessing the DLC will probably be centered around venturing into Shaolin land and tracking down and 'resolving' the Bulgarin situation. $15/5 hours.

Thinking about this more it gets interesting. With the latest NPD figures showing roughly 6.3 million units of GTA4 sold worldwide let's go ahead and assume that it is a 50/50 split between platforms. As of right now that puts roughly 3 million 360 copies out there. If the DLC were to release today and *everybody* who bought a retail GTA4 disc were to purchase it the price would neet to be at least $20 for Microsoft to clear a profit if you factor in MS paid $50 million for the rights.

It would seem that the number of copies sold by the time the DLC actually comes out is going to determine it's pricing. I find it hard to believe that the purchase projections would be any higher than 50% and probably more around the 20-40% mark. This number would only go lower the longer it takes for them to release the DLC and would only be offset by those who purchased the game more recently who have either not finished the game yet or finished yet have not put it behind them already.

Personally, I've gotten my current gen GTA fix and am content with waiting another four years for a new game. Although, if they were to let me hop in and fly one of the planes at Francis Intl...........

If they want money this content pack needs more than just new missions.  Im talking a new area, or a few new vehicles.  More stuff to do would be nice as well.  I beat the game and havent touched it since which is a first for me and a GTA game.

I got sick of GTA IV months ago, so dlc has to be something really cool to make me want to play it again. How much would I pay for it? Well, if it's like 800 points or more, forget it. I can get a sweet xbla game like BC Rearmed or Geo Wars 2 for that price. But of cource it's not really fair to say something like this without knowing what the dlc will be, so let's wait and decide then. ;)

Hopefully more clothes, more cars, more missions, more achievements. I've heard that the guy who voiced Niko Bellic is suing Rockstar because he doesn't get royalties, so maybe Niko won;t be in the expansion. Perhaps a three-part prequel?

I see the "exclusive" DLC going to the PC (before the PS3) due to it being a Microsoft platform; whom bought the exclusivity for the DLC. And I see the content as just a parallel to the story from another viewpoint (which will include more characters from which to get missions, new street encounters, and perhaps some new relationship characters). There might be a new weapon (gimme silenced pistol) or vehicle (screw planes, I want the Rhino tank or a Jetski), but I wouldn't expect there to be many more things that could possibly upset the balance laid by the initial release. There might be new cheats added that affect physics or combat, or something like the old sandbox style cheats of previous GTAs (i.e: hovering cars or super punch). I would not expect another borough, however I would love one that was all countryside and towns. I wouldn't want to pay more than 800 MSP, and I refuse to pay more than 1200 MSP for anything less than a new borough.

Also, I'm sure everybody remembers that rumor about the DLC starring a biker. Well Johnny (of the Lost biker gang), whom played a similar role to Niko and was featured in a few missions, seems like the perfect fit. Since there's the diamond subplot from the initial release, and one of the Housers mentioned wanting to show different facets to the same story, and the fact that Johnny stole the diamond money in the museum mission, It couldn't be more obvious. Also Ray Bulgarin (the "owner" of the diamonds) was left unharmed by Niko... I expect Johnny to take care of him. Also in the opening sequence we see a man drop a diamond into some stew looking dish... smells like foreshadowing to me.

I'm hoping to see some customization options that were left out from SA. The story was epic though so getting another "episode" of it would be worth the purchase as well. And exclusive means exclusive so no ps3. Although I can see it coming to the PC as well which would be a welcomed addition

It's been quite a while since I played GTA IV actually, I might get back into it again. Then after a while playing around with the after-story features, I may even play through the game again, although something is making me feel like I shouldn't, like it was really a one-off and I can't just go back and start again with all those characters and the relationships between them. It was an absolutely scorching game though, so I think I'll have to play it again. Story-wise it was just scripted so well, I really felt a part of it. Think I'll try and 100% it first though, maybe then I'll feel better about playing through the story again. Thing is, even after you've finished the main game, there seem to be so many different things to do, and you just want to do them all at once. Trying to decide exactly what to do at any one time is one of the main in-game dilemmas.

Anyways, hopefully this DLC is on PS3 soon enough. Fingers crossed for a new online co-op "zombie outbreak survival" mode. And perhaps a fix to that slightly temperamental server setup that seems to kick you out on occasion for no reason.

I dunno, the set of missions on a content pack probably wouldn't be big enough to tell a good story. I have a bad feeling it's going to just add a bunch of shops and some mini-games and maybe some side missions that probably should have been in the game anyways. Who wants to deliver some food!? Not me! And even if it does add some real missions, without a compelling narrative there's no reason to care. During the game's story I found moments to be awfully familiar. "Yup, this sure is what I was doing in 2001" but the story allowed me to push past that feeling.

Or rockstar releases a content pack that rocks and shocks the nation. I don't know

keef had a neat idea where the DLC could be a what if style missions. This would let rockstar try some other mission types that are not thug life themed. imagine: red dawn story-line where you are helping save the city from a communist attack or ... scratch that, its retarded.

Lets be honest here. If the GTA exclusive content eventually comes out on the PS3 it will be 1+ years late. Bioshock was a great game, but anyone who really wanted to play it, probably has already played it by now.

I expect a crapload of new missions with either new characters or existing ones or both, with the requisite cutscenes and dialogue, to at least tie up the Bulgarin thread. I'm really hoping this content doesn't end up being a simple upgrade with new weapons, clothes shops, stores, etc. And I hope they don't do anything like patching in various vehicle minigames, or something like that, or new websites and ringtones. That would depress me. I would pay 20 bucks for a substantial mission pack, like with at least 50 new story missions with new and old characters, like I said. 'Specially Bulgarin. That prick.

simply new missions isn't worth paying for.....and all speculations that its gonna be an entire city by some people needs to end, its not happening. I don't know if it ends up interesting I may buy it, but with it coming to the PC soon, all DLC there from users will be better than whatever this ends up being.

Unless we get to fly down to Modern day Vice City, I'm not all that excited about more missions. Especially with the way the endings turned out. It will be interesting to see how they decide to go with continuing the story. If they actually do continue the story.
My dream expansion would be playing as Brucie, getting a deal and moving down to Vice City. BE GENETICALLY DIFFERENT!! I'd be all over that.

For me it would have to be a full-on online setup. I only play the game when friends want me to hop online with them and piss off the other people by ganging up on them. I honestly have not completed the first mission and I've had the game for months.

Great game, but really I'm pretty much done with it.  Maybe I'll think about it when the game comes out again but the main storyline and big environment is the draw to that game, not a handful of missions that some DLC would provide.
