Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock Announced

I never pegged Gene Simmons as the narrator type.

Though most of the juicy details already came out via Nintendo Power, it's now totally official: Guitar Hero 6 is coming--and it's in the form of Neversoft's Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. According to the press release blasted this morning, Warriors of Rock will boast a few fresh features that might separate it from the rest of the Guitar Hero herd, namely, the "all-new, story-driven Quest Mode," its Quick Play+ feature, and its redesigned "rock-inspired" guitar. The game will feature, as always, a tracklist of guitar-driven songs (more on that later), drop-in and out party play, and the usual set of instruments: drums, bass, microphone, and guitar.

Former KISS bassist and all-around disgusting dude, Gene Simmons, will be the narrator of the game's Quest Mode which has players stopping a mystical brute named "The Beast" from destroying rock and roll. The mode will have realistic venues, like the CBGB, but it will also have cartoon-inspired fantasy settings like "molten fields of lava." Quest Mode also has its own original song written by Megadeth's Dave Mustaine called "Sudden Death."

Quick Play+, the other new feature, is a single and cooperative set of challenges that has the potential to provide "literally hundreds of hours of replayability," according to the press release. In a nutshell, it's a series of 13 challenges that that will be supported in all the songs on the disc, as well as "most" DLC songs from Guitar Hero World Tour and beyond. The names and details of all the challenges weren't revealed today, however, three of the thirteen were announced: Band Streak, High Score, Power Challenge. The latter challenge, as explained, is a "get the highest score" deal with the twist of being able to use unlockable "warrior powers."

In addition to all of that information, Activision busted out a partial track listing for Warriors of Rock which includes artists KISS, The Cure, Rammstein, and Muse. Here's that.

  • AFI -- “Dancing Through Sunday”
  • Avenged Sevenfold -- “Bat Country”
  • Black Sabbath -- “Children Of The Grave”
  • Buzzcocks -- “What Do I Get?”
  • Children Of Bodom -- “If You Want Peace...Prepare For War”
  • The Cure -- “Fascination Street”
  • Def Leppard -- “Pour Some Sugar On Me (Live)”
  • Dethklok -- “Bloodlines”
  • DragonForce -- “Fury of the Storm”
  • Drowning Pool -- “Bodies”
  • Foo Fighters -- “No Way Back”
  • Foreigner -- “Feels Like The First Time”
  • Jane’s Addiction -- “Been Caught Stealing”
  • KISS -- “Love Gun”
  • Megadeth -- “Sudden Death”
  • Metallica & Ozzy Osbourne -- “Paranoid (Live)”
  • Muse -- “Uprising”
  • My Chemical Romance -- “I'm Not Okay (I Promise)”
  • Queen -- “Bohemian Rhapsody”
  • Rammstein -- “Waidmanns Heil”
  • The Rolling Stones -- “Stray Cat Blues”
  • Silversun Pickups -- “There’s No Secrets This Year”
  • Slayer -- “Chemical Warfare”
  • ΖΖ Top -- “Sharp Dressed Man (Live)”

If you're still wondering about the guitar, so am I. No assets for it were released, but it's described as a "show-stopper" by Activision. I wonder if it can accidentally eat bats...

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is slated for release on the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii.

You'd think they would wait until, oh I don't know, people actually wanted another one?

Oh, Guitar Hero. You haven't been interesting since your second outing which was like 4 years ago. They effed up a Metallica game. I'm not sure how you do that. I'm gonna save my money for RB DLC and get some good charts, thanks :D

EndGame was generic, absolutely nothing distinguishes that from the other metal albums out there. Which is sad, considering how good Dave was. Sigh. I could live without the b-sides from it too.

" A Rock inspired guitar?   Only thing that excites me from that list is Bohemian Rhapsody, but it'll be in Rock Band soon enough. "

I'd hardly call Rhapsody a must have for a game featuring multiple instruments. Unless you take just a 3 minute chunk of it - which would be pointless since it would ruin the song. Some songs, no matter how classic, just don't belong in these types of games, outside of maybe a karaoke type thing.

Wait. ...Wasn't Bohemian Rhapsody already released on Guitar Hero through DLC? So does this mean that past DLC won't be forward-compati-- Aw, I don't care anymore.

OMG New Guitar Hero!!! Oh man, I'm so glad it's still 2007 and I give a damn!

Oh wait, it's 2010 and I don't. I'll bet cash monopoly money now that this will suck. Flat out, it will be bad. It'll have some neat stuff that'll be done poorly, and the graphics will continue to be Guitar Hero weird, and Activision will continue missing the point: That what made Guitar Hero 1 and 2 cool wasn't real rockstars like Simmons playing some part, and it wasn't this stupid commercial fake rock junk their trying to push as "Rock and Roll!" It was the fact that the developers were given enough time to develop a solid game with a high level of polish that showed a compassion for Rock. And until they get that, which I bet they won't, then this brand will continue drilling toward the center of mediocrity.

You wanna join the Fight to Save Rock? Stop buying these games.

As much as I disdain what Guitar Hero has become, this is exactly the right way for the franchise to go. Let Rock Band deal with the serious stuff, GH has always been more over-the-top and this is the logical next step.

I'm thinking that Bohemian Rhapsody is gonna be in RB3, and it won't need to be cut since it'll have the keyboard of some kind.
