Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack Details Are Out

Bungie has officially taken the wraps off its next Halo 3 DLC, coming early to purchasers of Halo Wars.

Still alive!
Ready for some new Halo 3 multiplayer maps? If you said "yes," Bungie has got you covered. New descriptions and media are out for the contents of the "Mythic" map pack which is due on Xbox Live Marketplace March 3 here in America (and a few days earlier in Asia and Europe).

Don't forget, you can also snag Mythic if you pony up the $79.99 for the sprawling Halo Wars Collector's Edition. Doesn't look like you'll get the maps any earlier, but at least you won't have to pay for 'em.

As much as I enjoyed Halo 3--which I think is by far the best of the series--I feel like the game has just about run its course. I'm ready for Bungie to flip the Halo script, which is luckily what they're doing with ODST later in the year. But if you're still jamming on some Team Slayer and whatnot, you'll probably be down for this pack.

Here's what the Microsoft press release has to say about the new maps.

Sandbox combines large-scale vehicular combat with a limitless amount of Forge customization. Boasting a tiered, open-world layout, “Halo 3” players will be able to build their own unique game experiences using the Forge map editor. Sandbox is a map unlike any Bungie has ever created.

Assembly is set in the heart of a Covenant Scarab manufacturing facility. With two identical bases on either side of this medium-sized map, it’s a perfect environment for both Slayer and objective games like Capture the Flag and Assault.

Orbital, a small asymmetrical map, is set in the docking station of the Quito Space Tether. One-sided games like One Flag, and One Bomb are sure to become quick fan-favorites, but the Slayer faithful will also find plenty of action on this battleground.

Actually, Sandbox sounds pretty neat. If people can use it to come up with more unique ideas like Rocket Race, I may have to re-up. Rocket Race is stupid fun.

Oh yeah, the screens. Can you match the map name to the screenshot? If you get all three correct, you win a cookie.*

*Cookies will not be provided. But while we're on the subject, what's your favorite kind? I like chocolate-chocolate chip. That's double the chocolate-to-cookie ratio!

Looks ok. I will pay no more than 800paints for it, don't pull of the 1600 paint bullshit.

I just don't think I can play any more Halo 3. It sucks cause I had a lot of fun with that game. I feel almost nastalgic right now.

im a fan of regular chocolate chip, but i like them to be a little burnt and crispy

I like those Rainbow Chips Ahoy.

And I might buy this pack cause the achievements are stupid easy. But I'll probably get banned for boosting.

assembly, orbital, and sandbox.

i want my cookie nao. The pena\lty for failure is death

On the subject i don't even have the legendary maps yet (swat and snipers are boring anyway) so buying an excessively expensive halo wars for the mythic ones is not high on my priorities. it's not the 600 points it's having to buy 0points ofr something that i will never have use for the remainder

Besides all the awesome maps are the orignial ones anyway ;)

"Ready for some new Halo 3 multiplayer maps?"

Uh, not really. By now, I don't know if I care that much. I might just buy the Halo Wars LE which will get me a few of these.

Although I haven't played Halo 3 in a while, I still think it has plenty of life left.  It's a bit overrated, but there's something undeniably resilient about the simple formula.  It's strange because I thought that Gears of War 2's multiplayer was technically the "best" I had ever played, but I ended up selling that before I even beat it (you can call me crazy, but I only spent $12 on it brand new anyway).  Maybe I've just lost patience for shooters, but Halo 3 and COD4 just barely made it within my window of tolerance.  Wow, I just had to take that in...I just realized, I'm officially tired of shooters...that's fucking crazy.

"yea, for like 2 weeks"

"but COD4 was the most popular"

"no, only for like 2 weeks, halo 3 was the most played game of 2008"

the main difference is that cod5 is bound to die out as cod6 arrives whereas halo 3 is bound to get even MORE popular because of halo 3 odst (same MP component)

I personally am a fan of chocolate-mint chip brownie centered gum drop covered sugar cookies.

I'm not buying Halo Wars on principle. This "value-added", "synergistic" BS can't be allowed to continue. Not that I would have bought the game, anyway -- it looks like a stale, cookie-cutter RTS with a bucket of Halo IP bastardization dumped on top of it. Now, if it were more along the lines of a World in Conflict-type RTS (that is, 16-player, join anytime, no base building, no resource gathering, instant tactical action) made by Bungie themselves (the only ones that should be allowed to "make up shit" in order to fill out the unit ranks), I'd be all over it and I'd have to deal with this Mythic Map scam that Microsoft is trying to pull. But it's not, so I don't.

And you're wrong, Brad. Halo 1 remains the best of the series. Back then, they didn't let questionable plot decisions get in the way of gameplay. With the recent announcement that Halo 3 ODST won't feature Elites as enemies, it's clear that we're still paying for the sins of the past.

Snickerdoodles, or however you spell it. The cinnamon ones.

Posted by user_nat

Yeah.. slight misinformation there.

The maps will NOT be on the market place right away, they will be exclusive to Halo Wars LE for an unknown amount of time. According to Bungie.. and Microsoft.

To clarify, the Mythic maps will only be available in the Halo Wars LE on March 3rd. They'll go up on the marketplace at a later, unspecified date, unless this newest press release said otherwise.

i first saw this on Bnet,i'll be getting the LE of Halo Wars fo sho!!!

What still keeps Halo 3 alive is its simple gameplay and constant support for Bungie. Though I don't play it so often now in favor of completing games that I put off (GTA IV!), Its still my #1 game on the 360. It just has that special something to it. And I agree with Brad. Halo 3 is the best in the surface. Sure, some points are lacking compared to Halo 2 and Halo CE (Elites for example), but as an overall package, Halo 3 trumps all.

But I agree with Brad for one thing. The Formula may be good but its running its worth out. I probably wouldn't have bought Halo 4 unless it was EXTREMELY different from Halo 3. Plus the main Story Arc for Halo is over. Halo 4 would have only dragged it on. It would have been redundant, just like the Star Was Prequel Trilogy. And then slowly, it would be driven to its grave, ending with an Animated Halo Film where Master Chief gets an apprentice alien that calls him 'Chief Guy'

Oh wait...

Glad they are doing Halo 3: ODST though. Its remarkably different from the standard Halo Experience and I can't wait to play it.

I just want Bungie to move on to something else; Halo is a great series, but enough is enough.  Even though Halo 2 is probably my favorite multiplayer game of all time (even above Starcraft), the series has been boring me as of late.  Halo 3's campaign was fun, but the multiplayer levels just didn't feel inspired.  There weren't really any secrets, and the layouts were bland--CoD 1up'd it in this regard.  I still hope ODST and Halo Wars turn out good, but I really think Bungie should move on to new properties.  They've always brought out innovative games like Marathon, Myth, and Halo, but you can only thrive on one thing for so long.

Posted by bshirk
SmokePants, I don't understand how some people will continue to say that Halo 1 was the best in the series.  What did Halo 1 have that Halo 2 didn't?  A decent pistol.  Halo 2 may have had a cliffhanger ending, but its multiplayer was much, much better.  First of all, Halo 2 had much more detailed graphics--go back to Halo 1 and you'll see what I'm talking about.  The controls are are more intuitive, and there are less glitches.  The warthog would constantly flip over and kill you in Halo 1, and I didn't encounter this problem at all during my 3 years of playing Halo 2.  You also didn't have access to nearly as many vehilces in Halo 1, you couldn't jack vehicles, there was no energy sword, the the multiplayer course layouts weren't as good.  Not only that, but it also didn't have 16 player online gameplay.

I'm guessing that you were burnt out of Halo by the time two came along, which is why you didn't enjoy it so much.  I kinda felt the same way with three, but I won't deny that Halo 3 featured gameplay and graphical enhancements.  The multiplayer maps were some of the worst of the series, but the game as a whole wasn't bad.

bshirk , I am absolutely not burned out on Halo. Quite the opposite. I've just been upset by some of the direction the series has taken. The first game had a sense of mystery and wonder that the sequels lack completely. The plot was tight, logical, and satisfying. Halo 2's plot wasn't satisfying; Halo 3's wasn't logical (they activated a Halo to kill something that a Halo pulse expressly doesn't kill!); neither were tight. And as far as the combat goes, the Elites in Halo 1 were the most fun to fight  enemies in any game I've ever played. They were backward-talking badasses and if you saw one carrying a sword, you'd soil yourself. In Halo 2, they were weak, watered down, and spoke the King's English. Lose, lose, and lose. And remember the awesome 3-way fights? What happened to those, Bungie?

It's funny you bring up 16-player multiplayer, because I bought the PC version of Halo for just that reason. There were 6 new large vehicle/CTF maps, so we weren't stuck playing Blood Gulch and Sidewinder all the time and it was awesome. Completely ruined me for Halo 2 and 3 multiplayer. With matchmaking 16-player games take for-ev-er to set up, there's usually horrible lag, and when someone quits, no one else is allowed to file into the game to take their place, so the matches have to be super short to mitigate player-loss. And then there's the whole spread-too-thin issue with their map selection. Whereas Halo PC had 8 dedicated vehicle CTF maps, Bungie could only spare 2-3 maps at launch to any given play style.

As far as vehicles, the only one that matters is the Warthog and for my money, I had more fun with the Halo 1 version. They were indestructible projectiles that instakilled anything that touched them while they were in motion. There were no cheap lock-on missiles to completely neuter them and you couldn't jack them, but what you could do is perfectly place a grenade in their path and send them pinwheeling, kill the driver, and the prize was yours. Realistic? No. Fun? Damn skippy.

The graphics haven't aged well -- I don't care. The levels were re-used -- they were well-worth re-using.

This is getting to be too long for a "Comment", but I have to say that I do like Halo 2 and 3 when compared to every other game EXCEPT Halo. That game is just special to me and if it weren't for it, I'm not sure I'd still be playing games.

They would do that. I'm surprised bungie would do that, but as per usual we can probably blame it on Microsoft liking money somehow.

You said you don't have the legendary maps, those are my 3 favorite maps in the game.
cold storage is also one of my favs

As far as the heroic map pack, standoff is rather fun for CTF and Assault although it's sort of bland in setting.  Rat's Nest is kind of meh, but Foundry is fun.  Talking about the default setup here.

And Orbital doesn't seem remotely similar to an arena map, I'd more likely compare it to Elongation (longest).  Assembly is the arena map here.

Assembly seems like a mix of Midship, Damnation, and dare I say Ascension?
