Here's Your Left 4 Dead Shopping Mall Map

Dawn of the Dead's Crossroads Mall is on the way to Valve's zombie-team shooter courtesy of some intrepid modders.

Listen, we all love Left 4 Dead around here. Love it. You and I are both a little concerned about its staying power, though. The four included scenarios are great, but--let me stress--there's only four of 'em. The game is ripe for future downloadable scenarios, of course, and I'm sure Valve is already cracking on some, but what will be the manner of their release? Will Valve neglect the 360 version and simply put them out for free on the PC, as they've done with Team Fortress 2? Will they appear on Marketplace with a fee? You have to figure someone is going to come out of future L4D DLC (L4DLC?) releases a little unhappy, unless Valve and Microsoft can come up with an equitable solution that benefits players on both platforms.

Anyway. In the short term, there's another, underground, seedier way to get new Left 4 Dead maps: the mod community. You can envision all kinds of nifty themed L4D scenarios coming out of modders' collective creativity. Like, say, a shopping mall. That seems like the kind of place zombies would like to hang out, right? Maybe hit the Hot Topic, grab a Cinnabon?

Someone's already got you covered on that front. The original, the greatest of all zombie shopping malls, the Crossroads Mall from Dawn of the Dead, is forthcoming in Left 4 Dead format. Here's a work-in-progress video of it (sans undead).

This map was already in existence as a part of the Half-Life 2 mod No More Room in Hell, which is a cooperative us-against-neverending-hordes-of-zombies game from back before Valve figured out how to turn that idea into a commercial prospect. Author Darth_Brush is porting the Crossroads Mall map to Left 4 Dead, and l4dmods.com says it will be exclusively hosting the map once it's ready for consumption. The site also promises a "special little surprise...real soon now" pertaining to the map. So check back there real soon now!

I hope this is the beginning of a long and fruitful era of Left 4 Dead mod support. Love love love the game's concept; want more maps, like, yesterday. While you wait, check out some shots of the Crossroads map after the jump. I'm just kidding, we have no jump.

Somehow, somebody needs to bring together Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising. That would be truly epic.

I have a buddy that loves TF2 on his 360, and I keep taunting him with the free mods and beta levels.  I've played Bowser's Castle and the Toy Fort TF2 levels, and he's never heard of them.  Steam 4TEMFW!

"Will Valve neglect the 360 version and simply put them out for free on the PC..."

that would be fine with me. It would only be fair, anyway, since its usually (other than with valve) just the opposite, the 360 gets the DLC and PC gets it in the shorts.

"Please, Please don't neglect us again Valve"

aww, c'mon. Valve is one of the few companies that started with PC games and has stuck to that as its primary market. Lots of other companies have abandoned their loyal PC following and started making consoles their primary market.

Very cool. Will this make me regret getting the 360 version? I would have got the PC version, but I'm sick and tired of putting money into PCs only for them to break on me or perform disappointingly. Either I'm cursed or I don't have a clue what I'm doing.

I think Valve still makes a bigger portion of their money on PC simply because of Steam and the licensing fees they gain.  Even if L4D would sell more on 360 than PC, Valve still has a vested interest in supporting the PC version more.  Still I hope Valve is able to put out some updates on 360, even EA is putting out substantial free updates for console games, why can't Valve?  But if you're a PC gamer think of it this way :  Why should people who end up paying for the majority of the game's development get less than the PC gamers?

As far as maps, anyone else surprised how few really decent quality user-made maps ever appeared for TF2?  There were some nice looking ones, but I can't remember a single exceptional map I played (on PC's TF2).

Left 4 dead is amazing on the 360 and amazing on the PC.

I think some DLC will be released before the SDK comes out though.
And let's hope Valve stay true to their promise of flamethrowers and frequent DLC!

It looks really great. But I just wonder if its going to look

Left 4 Deadey
With blood and sort-of ruined stuff. Because some maps can be intricate but lack a zombie kind of feeling.

that is a great fucking map, i love that movie and was planing on making somthing simalar but i was beaten by far from my own blue print's, but i do have a idea in the making of the city of 28 weeks later, i have studyed england and other place's to see what each roads were used in the movies and have copyed pictures and what ever i could get of the movie to sculpt ideas for the mod.

and for the people who have the 360 left 4 dead, vaule isent going to neglect what the pc has of moded map's, word has it they are thinking of making the game like they did for halo 3, you could go to there site and see posted maps from moders and download them to your hardf drive, although they need to manufacture ther right parts and such to make this download process work but it seem's vaulve wants to make xbox community more familiar with there games and to creat another fan base to launch more ideas.

so instead of waiting for dlc maps and such, wait till they launch the release of downloadable maps from people who are as briliant as this team or one person to creat a very well done map of the new l4d mall map of hell.

just keep busting heads and jecking away from those witchs and stay strong for the l4d team.
