Mass Effect 2 Goes Multiplatform and More News From EA

EA held its quarterly earnings call today, and there's a pile of announcements and delays to go along with it.

"Clear and simple, our titles did not perform to our expectations."
EA's John Riccitiello got on the horn to talk investors and other interested parties through the particulars of its quarterly earnings today. As you probably know, these types of calls are typically focused on the business side, with lots of number crunching and--as these things go these days--some hand-wringing, as well. But if you just want some game details, there's a chunk of that stuff to go over, as well. Here's a quick rundown:

  • The previously announced layoffs across the company have raised from 1,000 jobs to approximately 1,100. 12 EA-owned locations will be consolidated, which is up from the previously announced nine.
  • The Godfather II has been bumped back to sometime between April and June of 2009. The company cited marketing challenges and a cluttered marketplace for the delay.
  • The Sims 3 has been pushed back to June 2.
  • The PC version of Dragon Age: Origins has been delayed to the back half of 2009 and will now coincide with the console releases of the game.
  • EA plans to do more and better work on the Wii, because that's where the money is. As such, the company is working on a Dead Space game for the Wii. It wasn't a full, formal announcement, though. So we're not sure if this is a Wii version of the original or if it's going to be Dead Space: Chop 'Til You Drop or something.
  • Mass Effect 2 will be a multiplatform game.
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (potentially not its actual name) will hit consoles in Q1 2010.

Holy crap, we're talking about games that will come out in 2010 already? Dude, we live in the future. The company is also working to reduce spending and putting a greater focus on marketing. Getting behind the games that it puts out in a bigger way seems like a sound idea to me.

EA is making noise like it's going to go after the "core" market on the Wii pretty hard to capitalize on Nintendo's big installed base. If Dead Space was released on all four major platforms at the same time (PS3, 360, PC, and Wii), would you buy the Wii version? Aside from some potentially interesting dismemberment mechanics, that doesn't seem like a game I'd want to play with anything other than a dual-stick gamepad.

"Considering that Microsoft was the original ME publisher -- they basically funded the creation of that IP -- I'm sure they still retain some say over where it goes. Even though EA/Bioware retain ownership of the IP, Microsoft could easily have a right of first refusal clause, so it shouldn't be assumed that "multiplatform" means PS3.

Last summer, people assumed Tecmo was going to turn around and publish NG2 for PS3, even though Microsoft was the publisher on 360 and likely paid for much of the development. People didn't and still don't understand that publishers aren't inclined to invest in things that they have no control over. They tend to protect themselves, understandably."
True, but that might have changed after the purchase of Bioware. I'm sure Bioware/EA owns the IP, and can throw it in any direction they want. There might be some issues with MassEffect 1 being ported, but I can't see a reason Microsoft can stop them from making MassEffect 2 multi.
It sounds like EA isn't commenting on a PS3 version, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Annoyed much. I was meant to be getting Sims 3 for my B'day in a couple of weeks. Now it looks like I have to push my birthday back., heh.
Equally bad to hear about Dragonage, but good news for Mass Effect 2.

I'm happy to hear about Mass Effect 2 being multiplatform. Played the first but soon after my 360 died and I never bothered getting another 360. So now I will be able to play it on the PS3!

Lots of things getting pushed back.
Although some of you might think this is a bad thing, I consider it to be good.
This shows that EA (even in this economic situation) still cares about the quality of the games.
Also Dead Space on the Wii sounds awesome, although if they are trying to make money from the Wii, this type of game wont work.

Dead Space on the Wii is a great idea! RE4 on the Wii had a really nice control scheme. In fact, I prefer the Wii version over the gamecube version.

That being said, if done right Dead Space on the Wii could actually work.

Wow, surprising announcements. I thought that Mass Effect 2 would be like Baldur's Gate 2 where you could transfer over characters from the first game but now since it'll be on the PS3 I'm positive that you'll be playing a different Shepard.

Didn't think they'd go anywhere near Dead Space for the Wii and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 would be a good buy seeing as I never bought the original.

I recall reading that you can import your character in future games in the ME trilogy. I'm sure they wouldn't have taken the feature out in the possible case of the game going to PS3 (still not directly confirmed). I mean BG2 doesn't require you import a character.

And to those that assume multiplatform automatically implies PS3, you don't know EA's deceit. EA also said Dead Space was banned in Germany, China, and Japan to stir up pre-release controversy for sales. The truth is that Japan recieved an unedited release, EA doesn't distribute to China in the first place (that's like saying agriculture is "banned" from the Moon), and Germany bans virtually every piece of super violent media. Not to sound like a MS fanboy or an anti-EA zealot, but I find it hard to believe EA is telling the entire truth.

Normally I would be up in arms, but I do understand that the PC version of DragonAge needs a lot of work if it's to be successful. From what I have seen so far that game looks like a serious hardware hog. if they can optimize it well i in this time I am all for it.

Heard rumours about Mass Effect 2 being multiplatform a few weeks back, so no surprise it's been announced. Won't hurt the game at all though hopefully.

Mass Effect was a great game.

So, could Sony swoop in, purchase Epic, and make Gears of War 3 PS3 exclusive? It's pretty much an identical situation. Epic retains ownership of the Gears IP, but I'm pretty sure that Microsoft can keep future sequels exclusive to them for as long as they want to keep paying for them. After all, it's the sequels that make the initial investment in developing a new IP truly pay off, so it would be unusual for Microsoft not to retain right of first refusal, if they can't own the IP outright.

Now, it could be that EA bought out Microsoft's publishing rights. Or Microsoft just let EA have it -- ME sold okay, but not well enough to sour their relationship with EA over. Or it could be that Microsoft is still an active partner in the development of Mass Effect and ME2 will stay on the PC/360.

I don't care at all where it ends up. I'm just trying to bring up some realities that most people aren't considering.

So is Mass Effect 2 coming to PS3 or not then? If the sequel comes out they should probably port the original too. But I get the feeling this mean PC and 360?

Not much of a surprise that Mass Effect is making it's multiplatform move. Many big franchises already have done so and they've sold better than they would have as an exclusive,so no surprises there.I am not angry at EA despite seeing a 360 exclusive going away as they did what they had to do.

Too bad Dragon Age on PC is getting delayed. Was looking forward to it.

Booooo!!!!  *hissssssssssssss!*

Screw ME 2 on a PS3. Let's hope Bioware will get their balls back & tell them "No Can Do!"...funnier still, the PS3 version will be a shitty & inferior port to the 360/PC version & if we're lucky we won' t see any expansions on the PS3 but will see them for the PC/360...it'll be just like Fallout 3 in today's joyous anti-ps3 times. Yay!

If ME 1 was on PS3 to begin with, then I would get the second for PS3. But since I heard the decisions made in the first game affects the second, I just have to get it on 360. Can't wait!
Also, if ME2 is coming to PS3, then won't PS3 owners have to catch up with the first? Maybe a port of the first game? All this is assuming that when they say "multiplatform" they include the PS3, ha ha.

I for one might look into it but they'd have to fill me in.

I mean perhaps they could use the extra space on the Blu-Ray for a short movie or something. They'd have to bridge the story somehow.

Mass Effect 2 is PC/360 confirmed.

ncroal EA PR not confirming Mass Effect 2 for PS3, only 360 and PC. That's all folks. Back to a more manageable tweetstream.

I don't know if EA should port Dead Space to the Wii (Or make a new Wii exclusive). That game's atmosphere was one of it's main attractions, drawing the player into the doomed Ishimura, but with Wii, I don't think they can achieve the same sense of atmosphere with lesser graphics. Dead Space is just one of those games that need to be on higher powered machines...

I really wish when they decide to bring sequels to multi-platforms, that they release the original games multi-platform as well. I'm sure there's plenty of people who want to play the original and not just the sequel.
