Mass Effect 2's Grunt Revealed

BioWare has started filling in Commander Shepard's new party members, one by one.

I'm not usually in the habit of pasting game info straight out of press releases, but Mass Effect 2 is a game I happen to be sufficiently excited about that any shred of news is worth posting to me. Luckily, there's more than a shred here, as BioWare sent out a trailer and some accompanying details introducing Grunt, a Krogan warrior and one of your new party members in the sequel.

For my money, there is no finer Krogan in the galaxy than Mr. Urdnot Wrex, and it's too bad you can't hear Grunt utter "Shepard" in this trailer, but... the guy looks like a bruiser. Take a gander.

Once again stepping into the role of the heroic Commander Shepard, gamers will command their crew on a suicide mission in space. Players will strategically select each member of their squad, all of whom have a direct impact on the direction of the story and the squad’s chances for survival. Players will select from a motley cast of characters including the newly revealed ‘Grunt’ – a blood-hungry Krogan.

Once players have assembled their squad from amongst the galaxy’s most powerful mystics, geniuses, and convicts, they must lead them on a suicide mission to discover why humans are vanishing from the galaxy. The success of the mission hinges on the squad recruited and their loyalty to the mission. Shepard’s future depends on it.

“The Mass Effect trilogy is an epic, action-filled saga with consequences that will carry through from chapter to chapter,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, Group General Manager and Senior Vice President, Electronic Arts, and co-founder and CEO, BioWare. “Building out a diverse and loyal party is one of the features that makes the Mass Effect series quite unique. The characters Commander Shepard recruits are not only pivotal to the storyline, but essential to the player’s overall success."

The new character revealed in the Mass Effect 2 squad is ‘Grunt’. A violent and unpredictable Krogan fighter, Grunt has never faced true defeat. His unsurpassed physical strength makes him a strong asset to Commander Shepard’s team, if he can be tamed, and if he can be trusted.

Grunt is the second party member to be revealed in the Mass Effect 2 universe following ‘Thane’ a deadly assassin who was first introduced in June. More details about the rest of Shepard’s crew will be revealed in the coming months.

It's a shame BioWare has jumped on the exclusive-content-for-preorders bandwagon with that dragon armor there, but then you figure there's an appreciable amount of overlap in the Dragon Age and Mass Effect audiences, right?

The character like this from the first game was much, much more bad ass.
Hence all the complaining about this new guy.

i wonder how wrex and grunt would interact if you had them both on the same team? i saved wrex not only because he was a badass mofo, but because i really liked him as a character. i dont know about some crazy dude that runs into fire fights. he could end up messing things up in missions

The voice is not as cool as Wrex's.  Wrex also had an interesting personality though, and maybe Grunt will be a nice surprise.

I am so stoked for this game. Thanks Brad for the new look see. I don't mind the whole Dragon Age armor thing since I'll be getting that game on release day as well.

I just noticed Grunt runs like a fat dude, he waddles from side to side when he moves.

I think Grunt is probably going to be more a soldier than a biotic, so we'll see how that goes.

Wrex+Grunt= DOUBLE TROUBLE...rated PG-13.

Fantastic they replaced Wrex with a generic tough guy.
The dragon armor looks embarrassing, it needs to ditch the red paint and dragon logo to look acceptable.

I really liked the first one but the biggest fault with that game to me was how inconsistent it was. The Citadel level takes more than 4 hours of wandering around- then the last act is non-stop action.

I might get this but is it just me who thinks this trailer is unintentionally funny.

I suppose this is the guy they replace Wrex with, if you happen to have him dead from the first game's save.

There is a reason i saved Wrex and that is because he is a badass, I don't want some guy called Grunt on my team.
