Nintendo 3DS Due In Japan By March 2011

New handheld to offer glasses-free 3D, backwards compatibility.

Nintendo of Japan has issued a brief press release confirming that it's working on its next handheld platform. Going by the working title of "Nintendo 3DS," the platform is scheduled to ship in Japan before March 2011.

Details on the platform are slim, as the release only states that it will offer 3D effects without the use of any sort of glasses and that it will be backwards compatible with existing DS software. More details will hit at this year's E3 in June.

It's nice to have the rumors get cleared up a little bit, but doesn't it seem strange to announce this before the DSi XL hits every territory? I mean, who's going to run out and buy an XL now that they know it'll be obsolete in around a year?

I'm confused: is this just a "haha i'm referencing something" thing, or does 3D brand loyalty actually exist?

Right, so, lemme get this straight... this is a NEW system, not just another re-make of the original DS?

It didn't stop the five people who bought a Game Boy Micro after the release of the Nintendo DS. Some people like obsolete hardware. "

It's their next-gen handheld. What made you think otherwise?

This won't be a DS, but it is backwards compatible with them.

@Tortoise:  I don't know. This seems like it would be perfect for something like Paper Mario. It could look like an actual pop-up book.  It really depends on whether it's done well.

Anyway, I'm clearly an outsider here as one of the only people I've heard of that enjoy 3D in movies. I've always found it strange that a group of people who are so interested in technology and its applications would dismiss this entire field out of hand. I, for one, am quite interested on what this DS is going to be able to do and whether it is a minor update or a full-fledged successor.

This reminds me of this interview with james Cameron on attack of the show. He explained that there are good glasses free 3D displays but you need to be in a perfect "seet spot" angle point of view for it to work properly and therefore he believed that it isn't good for home TVs but great for laptops since you always go for that perfect viewing angle whenever you use one anyways.
I'm guessing Nintendo has the same idea.
I have seen this stuff and used it before at a tech show, it works great so long as you are right in that sweet spot at all times- which you absolutely will be when holding a handled.

It still has DS in the name, it's a working title i know, but Nintendo have produced 4 reincarnations of the original DS so it seems a little sureal that they're finally creating a new generation of handheld consoles.

Here i was with some rumors from developers that it was planned to be as powerful as the gamecube. Still not getting the idea of how it would possibly work. I'm kinda scared that they are playing with words they shouldn't... Still if it has game cube capabilities I'm gonna buy it.

Nvidia Tegra should be powerful enough to produce Gamecube level graphics at a speed to display two sides of the image at the same time.

Wow @ how many people don't realize that this is the next-gen DS, not a redesign.

And I never understood the hate for 3D. It's like hating on movies for being in color or being shot in widescreen.

I have had my DSlite since 2006.  Question is who would upgrade to DSi and why?  DSiXL?  Come on, the DSLite is where it has always been.  I will gladly run out to get this, if I feel the form factor and styling are good.  Though because it is going into 3D, I wonder if thats all they will do to it.  I mean, will the graphics be a lot better?  What about storage medium?  Will have a DS cart slot and have internal memory?  What about this crappy camera shit?  Will they drop it?  And since this is the first handheld with 3D it may be better to wait for the second release since they will probably have to make improvements on it.  Oh man, E3 cannot come soon enough.

I'm really not a fan of 3D anything, but I'll wait till E3 to judge whatever they're doing with this thing. Right now I'm 50% curious and 50% why the hell is this the innovation you came up with. I'm also wondering why they announced this now right before the XL and not at E3. You confuse the hell out of me Nintendo.

That's not possible with current 3d technology. You need two working eyes for anything that requires glasses. That's the whole point of the glasses. Your brain was lying to you.

It looks like the 3DS tech is more like possible head-tracking mixed with heavy usage of accelerometers. Just watch the demo video.

The other stuff seems cool but we won't really know what crazy applications the Big N has cooked up for it until E3.

Nintendo promises a new hardware release every year! They're trying desperately to compete with the PSP!

(all of that is a joke, in case it's not obvious, and it rarely is on these forums).

I think this just goes to show how much Nintendo really cares about territories outside of Japan.

This barrier sits in front of the LCD and separates light just enough so that the human brain perceives a 3D image, eliminating the need for stereoscopic 3D glasses, but at the expense of requiring a strict viewing angle. Holy cow. Every piece of this news is ridiculous. From the release date (a year from now. It's like saying "hey the DSI XL is coming and is awesome and you should buy it. Oh, and 3D handheld next year) to the 3D (NO GLASSES!!!!!).

I mean, how will it work. Is it holograms? Will it have thousand mirrors to replicate the effect?

That's not possible period. You cannot see a 3D image with only one eye. Its completely ridiculous.  lol @ you, CL60.

@winternet
glassless 3D is very much possible, especially on a handheld where you have pretty good control over the viewing angle + only one viewer + possible eye tracking via camera.
