Nintendo Media Summit Roundup

Your one-stop shop for all the crazy Nintendo shenanigans these last 24 hours.

You're going to buy it, admit it.
Wow, Nintendo went and rolled out some news last night and today, didn't they? The big item, of course, was the announcement of the new Nintendo DSi, which is thinner, has bigger screens, includes two cameras (3 and 0.3 megapixels), offers an SD card slot and can play games downloaded from thew new DSi store.

Here are some other quick hits on the DSi and other Nintendo news from around the web.

  • Shacknews has a side-by-side comparison between the DSi and the boring old inferior DS Lite with a breakdown of what's changed.
  • MTV's Stephen Totilo drops knowledge on DSi sales projections, audio playback capability, and the middling camera hardware, straight from Iwata's mouth.
  • Multiplayer also has a full list of all the games announced and dated at today's media summit. Highlights include a third Mario & Luigi for the DS, a sequel to the Treasure-made N64 sleeper Sin & Punishment, and a new freaking Punch-Out!! game for the Wii. videogaming247 has shots of all the DS stuff.
  • Want the DSi anytime soon? Ready your importing skills. It's out in a month in Japan, but way into 2009 in all other territories, says Reggie. Kotaku on this one.
  • Maybe the biggest news from a purely nerdy perspective: Club Nintendo, the famed customer-rewards membership native to Japan, is finally coming to America. Club Nintendo ain't exactly your average frequent-flyer program; they've dished out some pretty impressive, rare Nintendo-related swag in the past. It's gonna be huge here. You know how Nintendo fans get.
  • A new Wii Speak channel will let you chat with three other Wii owners using the new microphone. Details at 1UP.
  • Lastly, videogaming247 shows off a bunch of high-res DSi hardware shots.

I wonder if you'll still have to hit Start to uppercut. Probably not.
I think that's everything important. Did anyone else notice that it looks like the DSi has traded the Lite's glossy ("piano black") finish for a duller matte one like on the first DS? Hey, that means no more ugly fingerprints. I can feel good about owning a black DS again!

If you'll allow me to digress for a minute here, the other impressive thing Nintendo did today is succinctly prove why hulking trade shows like E3 are pretty unnecessary these days. Let's look at the investment they made. A short press briefing in Japan, and a rented hotel ballroom in San Francisco. Toss in a little online asset coordination and my RSS reader was absolutely bursting at the seams today with Nintendo headlines. It was like nothing else was even happening. All for a fraction of what you as a publisher would have to throw down to maintain a presence at a major trade show--and fight with all the other publishers there for headline space. This contrast is especially stark since we're going into the Tokyo Game Show next week, which Nintendo traditionally skips out on. After today's news extravaganza, it's not hard to see why.

I'll leave you with the announcement trailer for the sequel you never saw coming, Sin & Punishment 2.

Club Nintendo FTW. I've been waiting for years.

You're right...E3 really is totally unneeded now-a-days. It's almost more practical for companies to do exactly what nintendo did, and just kinda do their own thing.

Wow, Nintendo is finally playing with power again!

I'm excited about Club Nintendo.

That is a lot of big news. The Big N dropped a Bomb.

Club Nintendo sounds cool, but I'm NOT getting the DSi. I just got a DS lite for christs sake.

Posted by JoelTGM

Wow, half the battery life as the old one, and you can no longer play gameboy advance games on it.  That is just awful!

Here's to DS homebrew!

Not the rest of the world's fault that you're so late to the party, brotha.

Thinner body and bigger screens? sign me up. I'm insane enough to drop $150 an improved DS. Please tell me they made the face buttons bigger though. sheesh. OH MY GOD and please tell me they fixed the start and select buttons!! HOLY CHRIST they are so bad on the lite! I feel like im being stabbed in the thumb every time i have to push one.

But then again if it's much higher then $150, OR if it doesnt have that satisfying "CLAP" sound when you close it, then I'd have to think about it real hard.

But dear GOD Nintendo! Making a new Punch-Out?!? I hope for your sake that game ain't some damn bootsy pile!! YOU WILL NOT SULLY THE NAME OF PUNCH-OUT!!

and Club Nintendo I guess sounds like it could be cool? I'd have to know more about it. But if they've had it in Japan all this time anyways, I'm glad it's coming over these ways.

those flying things at the start of the trailer. are those............ no they can't be, that would be inappropriate.

Must....resist...buying....DSi.....old one...not inferior....just marketing speak....

Oh, GOD I CAN'T TAKE THIS!

Kick ass.

I still for some reason feel all of this just.... isn't enough. Sorry, Nintendo.I'm not really that much into Punch-Out!! Never was. Sin and Punishment was pretty cool, but I still don't know anyone who really wanted a sequel. But hey, if the really hardcore Nintendo fans are happy... I just hope Nintendo releases a new Star Fox/Kirby/F-Zero or a brand-new IP. That'll be the day. For me though, looks like my Brawl Box will be collecting dust for another long stretch...

AWESOME!

I'd have been all over Club Nintendo 5 or so years ago.

Having a 3 Megapixel cam on the DSi is a pretty good idea IMO, ohterwise I wouldn't consider it since I already have a Lite.

I'm disappointed that it's shaped like a Lite but thinner. I would rather have something like a fold-out SNES controller except longer\taller in the middle to accomodate the screens. The rectangle digs into my hands (oddly I never noticed this until playing it for a few months) and if it had round ends, it would still fit in any pocket.

@Doubleshock: yeah, I totally agree on the battery life. If I'm not mistaken there have been some advanements with battery technology recently to make them cheaper or at least longer-lasting for the same price. Battery life is a big deal for things such as cell-phones, so this doesn't seem to be a good strategy to nab Joe Nongamer.

Don't worry though, I'm sure you'll be able to grab the DSiBatteryPlus for $40 a few months after the DSi comes out.

As someone that still has the DS Fat and loves both Sin and Punishment and Punch Out, this is starting to make me like Nintendo again.

Posted by PLWolf

So hyped for the new PunchOut!! Love the new music and style, I can't wait.

Punchout = Facebreaker for Wii.  Not interested.

Sin and Punishment 2 - They can wake me up when they do a console sequel to Gunstar Heroes.  SnP was NOT Treasure's best effort.

DSi - Another disingenuous cash-in.  Most of its sales will likely be from people who already have a DS.  Sorry, Nintendo, but I'm happy with my Lite, especially as it has GBA compatibility and damned good battery life.  Also, having an SD port is just BEGGING for piracy.  I expect 3rd parties to back away even more now.  Oh, and did they have to do the lower case i thing?  We GET it, Nintendo, you want to be like Apple.  You market exclusively to mindless appeal seekers like Apple does, and now we're going to see i in all your products.  We get it.

Yeah, looks like my Wii's set for another year of collecting dust.

I'm kind of psyched for these games... but that's also kind of sad. a few years ago when Nintendo was releasing awesome games these would be on my 'meh' list. Now they're the best they have to offer.

@ YukoAsho :

That lower case "i" has got nothing to do with Apple, have you ever heard of the N93i? Or maybe the E61i ? Obviously you haven't, usually small innovations are hidden behind the small "i", added to the old models names, and this is the case with the new DSi nothing more nothing less.

Wow, more stuff from Nintendo. This should really tell everyone big announcements at E3 are gone forever.

I am absolutely excited about this press conference. The DSi looks interesting, the games look great... 2009 is going to make up for 2008 in style. And Sin and Punishment 2? Most certainly fantastic. Also I've been wanting that Club Nintendo for a while: in Japan, they recently got an SNES controller for Virtual Console. How cool is that?

FFS get some decent storage for the Wii!!!

All that interests me is S&P2

Why not include the full media video showing all the games together? It was a pretty sweet video overall, displaying many games which didn't get dedicated trailers, like Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, Oboro Muramasa Youtouden, the amazing looking Forever Blue / Endless Ocean sequel, Cosmic Walker and many more, some previously seen (but with new footage) and some brand new...

Also, the Monster Hunter 3 shaky cam footage was pretty sweet...

The DSi had its own lineup video as well...

Overall, the Media Summit was much more exciting than this report implies in my opinion...
