Nintendo Slashes 3DS Price to $169.99, Early Adopters Get Free Games

The house that Mario built seems to have taken disappointing hardware sales to heart.

No Caption Provided

3DS has not lit the world on fire in the same way DS did. You can blame your smartphone for that. When DS launched, devices like the iPhone did not exist. Decent video games were not available for your mobile phone!

That's all changed, and Nintendo's glasses-free 3D gimmick hasn't been enough to sway customers to drop $249.99 for its new handheld.

Maybe they'll pay $169.99, though, which is the new retail price of 3DS, effective August 12.

Nintendo also confirmed release months for Super Mario 3D Land (November) and Mario Kart 7 (December). Wait, Mario Kart...7? Really? I wouldn't be surprised if that one changed before release.

If you (like me) already bought a 3DS and are cringing, Nintendo's hoping to appease early adopters with the "3DS Ambassador" program, which roughly translated into English means "free stuff."

First, you'll gain access to 10 free Virtual Console games from the NES era, including Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda. The others five aren't known, and all ten will become publicly available for purchase at a later date.

Additionally, Nintendo's offering up another 10 free Game Boy Advance titles. The games include Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong. The other five weren't listed, but that's a hell of a list already.

Strangely, Nintendo claims these free GBA titles won't be made available to everyone else.

"Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future," reads the press release.

More details about the program are to be announced, but Nintendo's only requirement is that players connect to the eShop before 11:59 p.m. EST on August 11. Before the price drop, basically.

Sony can't be very happy about this aggressive move. Many did not expect the company to hit a $249.99 price point for Vita.

Maybe he wants the free games?

If he buys from Amazon or Best Buy or one of the other big stores, they'll price match the price drop so he'll get the discount and the free games. Good move.

awwww hell ya!
It still doesn't drop until the 12th, and I'm sure Best Buy knows that. Still worth a try, though. Good luck!
Bestbuy employee is stupid enough to not know that.

Wow, this is some kind of a record for quickest & largest price drop, right? I'm sold!

Well, I will be when games are on the thing.

I don't think it's my iphone at all. I think it's a stupid price point with bugger all games and 3D tech that may make my eyes bleed..i wouldn't know because they've not bothered to get it into consumers hands enough to try one.

Awesome since that's how much I paid for my DS Lite, but there still aren't any 3DS games that I want.  I want JRPGs for my handheld and so it's a waste until some of those drop.  Still, good move by Nintendo.  Moms and dads are much more likely to pick one up for the kids at that price.

I was immediately reminded of when the Iphone first hit the market at $600 and three months later cut the price by $200.  Early adopters were more than miffed.  I think Apple offered a $100 in credit for their Apple store/Itunes.

Bah, I don't believe the Iphone theory for a second. How about lack of quality software? How about age old looking graphics looking like it's coming from a slightly powered Nintendo 64?

No games, no power made the 3DS not sell, not smart phones. I like how you journalists express your opinions as if they were facts.

Awesome. I actually was considering picking one up yesterday on a whim ! But didn't see to the lack of games at the moment ( other than Zelda that peaks my interest).

But this is worldwide right ? Not only in the U.S ?

The price is definitely more appealing now, but personally, there are ZERO games on the entire platform that would warrant the purchase of a 3DS. Not to mention the shoddy hardware and the battery life. I am reluctant to purchase a handheld if it ends up being chained to the wall socket 24/7.

Actual games and a total redesign, and I'm all yours, Nintendo!

Yet another story of entitled early adopters getting all up in a tizzy.

If you don't want to get burned, don't buy early. Wait for a price drop, or a hardware revision. No one is at fault but yourself.

OK UK price drop is happening (price not confirmed but supposedly dropping by "about a third") and we do get free games for buying early. I am not disappointed I brought early but I feel bad for my brother who only brought his 3DS last week, at least we get a decent amount of free games and my friend who was on the fence will probably get one now.

Where's your source for this info?

I'm in the UK and although I already have a 3DS and don't really care about the price drop I would definitely like some free games; if they ignore us and don't give us the games or even a price drop I will be pretty pissed off.

Luck isn't needed, it's part of their policy to match their own prices within a certain date. Seriously, is there a chance in hell that there's going to be that one astute employee that squints at you and goes, "You're one of those gamer boys, I know you read that press release from Nintendo! I'm on to you! No pricematch for you!"? It doesn't work like that.

Still a port system, still crap for battery life, still gimmicky.

Here's hoping the Vita is better. And it's still a better deal for the amount of actual horsepower you get versus cost. Let's hope devs do something with it. Then again, I don't hear about folks like Ken Levine doing anything for the 3DS...

The new price is great but I think I'll wait for the next iteration. I want more battery life mostly and there aren't any 3DS games that I consider "must have" yet.

I got my info from Joystiq and Official Nintendo Magazines site, but that guy also linked it on Eurogamer as well so I would say that makes it pretty official. Also it's been that price on Amazon for a while so it should be reduced further than that by August the 11, it's like £180 in game/gamestation right now so if it drops by a third that would make it £120. Personally I think it will be like £130 or £140 in the UK after the price drop.

@RhombusOfTerror: I hope that's not what it's being dropped to. Most stores in the UK are now selling it for £200 already. So Amazon are massively over charging at £230. £160 is still far too high. £130 or lower would tempt me.

Did you just look it up on Amazon.com?  Because the price will only be officially changing on August 12; so, until then, Amazon will show the current price.
Well on the .co.uk site it says 229.99 cut to 169.99. But whatever, 169.99 is still pretty good.

This is just another sign that traditional handheld gaming consoles are no longer relevant. Expect the Vita to experience the same lackluster sales following launch. Handheld gaming systems are today's version of PDA's - technology and customer expectations have left them behind. If they don't run apps, handle email, and preferably make phone calls it's just too redundant to carry one around.

Actually, in a bid to increase sales, Amazon and other online retailers had already cut the price to between 170-180 pounds.  So, the 169.99 is pre-price cut.  Now, since it has already been unofficially cut by these retailers, it probably will only go down to somewhere around 153 pounds if my math is correct.  Nintendo announced that European prices would be cut by about a third; so, a third from the retail price would be around 153.  Which isn't a bad price at all.  And online retailers may even do a premium on -that- price, pushing it into the 140s; so, watch for that.

Yeah Amazon were selling it for £187 when it was new so I don't think them selling it for £169 now is anything to do with this price cut. I agree that we're likely to see a further price cut in the future.

That doesn't quite explain last quarter's dramatic increase in sales of the PSP or the Nintendo DS's continued steady drive which outpaced the 3DS.  The 3DS has problems that are simply its own; the other handhelds are actually doing pretty darn fine at the moment.  So, this price drop is in a bid to have the 3DS hopefully take over for the DS in its continually healthy sales.

@buft: You missed the point. This price drop is happening within 6 months of product launch.

Xbox 360s or even the original Xbox units didn't drop for at least a year except for bundle deals and even then you were required to buy multiple games (I had to buy Project Gotham and Halo when the original Xbox launched).

Now had this happened a year out or even in November for the holidays then sure I would agree that it is just a sign of things becoming cheaper or lowering a cost to get more units in hand but that isn't the case. The 3DS had a terrible launch and since launch there hasn't been very much to get excited about (Zelda was basically it).

You know you can turn it off and just enjoy improved graphics and processing power over the old DS, right?  It's a whole new system.  It's fine even without the 3D.  Have you checked it out?

That's an insane price drop.  I wonder if that's a level they will be profitable at and they just chose $250 for super icing on the cake or if they are now taking a loss on the system.  Either way, very attractive price.  I might buy one now.

I'm in the UK and although I already have a 3DS and don't really care about the price drop I would definitely like some free games; if they ignore us and don't give us the games or even a price drop I will be pretty pissed off.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nintendo-3DS-Aqua-Blue-Handheld/dp/B004ISLDUG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311847809&sr=8-1already happening it seems.

Yeah Amazon were selling it for £187 when it was new so I don't think them selling it for £169 now is anything to do with this price cut. I agree that we're likely to see a further price cut in the future.

It looks like Nintendo UK has said the 3DS will see a price cut of around a third off the retail price.  So, that would place it in the lower 150s.  Which, if online retailers discount it even further, could place it in the 130s - 140s, a nice price indeed.

That's a way bigger cut than expected.
I'll still be waiting for a redesign and a collection of great games though. It worked out well for me with the original DS.

Great, I get a pile of shitty Nintendo games.

I guess that's the price I paid for getting one early (and never touching it).

Heads up to Canadians!

I bought a 3DS yesterday for $199 at Futureshop if you want those VC Games then go save $50 on the 3DS price tag right now and your still eligible for the 3DS Ambassador program!

3d still makes me feel ill and cross-eyed. so no thanks.
You know you can turn it off and just enjoy improved graphics and processing power over the old DS, right?  It's a whole new system.  It's fine even without the 3D.  Have you checked it out?
Then it's just a DSi with bad battery life and a very poor selection of games. The 3D effects are pretty much the only selling factor here.

I would much rather have Nintendo give us 2 new 3DS games of our choosing than 20 old games of which I can't pick and can already have on other platforms.
