Notch's Next Game is '0x10c'

It's set in space, and sounds appropriately insane.

This man would like to take you to space.
This man would like to take you to space.

Notch hinted not too long ago that his next game would be set in space, an idea that undoubtedly sent minds racing as to what kinds of crazy crap the Minecraft creator might come up with when working within the boundless stretches of the universe at large. Still, I doubt anything was expecting anything quite this specifically bonkers.

0x10c is the name of Notch's next game, a space-faring "hard science fiction" game that puts players in the role of one of many human astronauts from an alternate universe where the space race never ended. As the back story here goes... you know what? Let's just use Notch's own words.

In 1988, a brand new deep sleep cell was released, compatible with all popular 16 bit computers. Unfortunately, it used big endian, whereas the DCPU-16 specifications called for little endian. This led to a severe bug in the included drivers, causing a requested sleep of 0x0000 0000 0000 0001 years to last for 0x0001 0000 0000 0000 years.

It's now the year 281 474 976 712 644 AD, and the first lost people are starting to wake up to a universe on the brink of extinction, with all remote galaxies forever lost to red shift, star formation long since ended, and massive black holes dominating the galaxy.

Get all that? I hope so, because I don't think I'm smart enough to dissect it any further.

Players will control a ship that works via a generator with a fixed wattage. Certain technologies will require a bigger drain on your ship's generator than others. Notch cites the example of a cloaking device, which would require so much power that you'd have to shut down most computer systems and dim the lights just to make it work correctly.

The on-board computer you'll be using is "a fully functioning emulated 16 bit CPU" that you can use to control all your ship's functions. Notch plans to release full specs for the computer soon.

As for actual gameplay, Notch promises everything from lots of engineering and advanced economy systems to full-on combat against AI and rival player ships. You can see the full breadth of what Notch has thus far announced at the official 0x10c website. Similar to Minecraft, Notch plans to release an early version of the game publicly in order to have players help shape the ultimate direction of the final product.

Holy crap. My time machine from the past worked!

Listen, past self, you are about to go through some major changes. First of all, stop trying to open beer bottles with your teeth. Yeah, it's a cool party trick, but you'll pay for it later. Secondly, while German women are fun, don't fall in love with them. They are only using you for sex. Do the same. Lastly, we need to get your time machine to send you back before we cause some kind of temporal collapse. Unfortunately I can only offer long distance advice, as the presence of us both in the same room could be dangerous. I mean, I'm... you... we are not gay or anything, but we are very attractive, and technically it would just be masturbating...

See what I mean?! Quick, back to 2004!

0x0001 0000 1100 or 0x1100 0000 0001. Neither one of those is the number mentioned in the story, so I wonder what it is supposed to mean.

0x denotes hexidecimal, 10 in hex is 16, c in hex is 12,

So 0x10^c translates to 16^12 in the decimal system. 16^12 = 281 474 976 710 656.

Of course I could be totally and utterly incorrect.

Makes sense to me. I didn't realize the c was supposed to be an exponent, in the post it was looked like another number. 1988 seems like a very plausible start to the game, especially a sci-fi one dealing with such an error.

My mind is reeling with some of the possibilities suggested by the concept that Notch has described so far. The idea that you have an emulated computer to control your ship that runs even when you aren't playing is rather interesting. I imagine that with some degree of skill, the whole thing becomes a programming metagame where you're merely writing code for the computer to control your ship while you aren't logged in. (Would give you the advantage of effectively playing the game 24/7?)

I also imagine that there are simple ways to share computer code with others in the game so that you can grab and remix cool routines written by others. Perhaps someone crazy enough to build an ALU in Minecraft would write a BASIC compiler for the in-game DCPU bringing down the barrier to entry for everyone else. Carry that line of thought to a logical extreme: You end up joining 0x10c as a new player many years from now and your first steps in getting off the ground are to go download the DCPU port of the GCC, compile yourself the latest version of the community written kernel, etc.

one failure after another until his fan base moves on and he quickly becomes bankrupt

What are your standards for success? If many many millions of dollars earned off of an indie java game made by a very small team, a gigantic and avid fanbase/community who play the game regularly (check out the minecraft reddit, or the forums), and continued support for a game that cost 1/3 of what major retail games cost and to this day releases patches on an almost weekly basis is failure, then I can't really see ANYBODY making a successful game EVER.

And now he's barely announced his new game, which sounds really innovative and cool, and the internet hate machine is already spooling up. I just cannot for the life of me understand the Notch Hate.

And to tie up all of the other misconceptions here, Scrolls is being developed by another team within Mojang, Jeb and the Bukkit team are working on minecraft and pushing regular updates, and the monthly subscription is only for the online play, which will apparently be persistent and thus require servers and thus require money.

You have no idea how much I want this game right now. I especially like this part:

The computer in the game is a fully functioning emulated 16 bit CPU that can be used to control your entire ship, or just to play games on while waiting for a large mining operation to finish.

How fucking cool is that? Landing on planets, mining, trading, looting and all that... if this actually delivers on what it seems he want to do, this is going to be a huge time-sink.

Just as modded Minecraft has been for me. 'cause with mods Minecraft turns into a goddamn beast of a game, where you can really have fun with constructions, advanced machines and all that. Hell, on the server I play on now I am working on making a railroad network. With signal lights, diverting tracks, stations... the works. Not many games let you do that, and that is just a small part of what I can do.

I might even consider paying the monthly fee to join in on the multiplayer, 'cause that might be pretty neat.

You overlooked the part where he suggested there may be a monthly fee. I wonder if he'll be able to pull that off? He'll have to present something extremely compelling to do it, especially since he'll be competing with himself this time.
