OUYA Acquired by Razer

Razer announces plans to create Android-based game consoles for the Chinese market.

Full Disclosure: I came very close to backing OUYA on Kickstarter and then had a last minute moment of clarity, saving myself lots of money and disappointment.
Full Disclosure: I came very close to backing OUYA on Kickstarter and then had a last minute moment of clarity, saving myself lots of money and disappointment.

Last month, rumors of a potential acquisition of OUYA by computer hardware and accessory manufacturer Razer started popping up. Well, in a press release issued today, Razer confirmed that on June 12th the company purchased "the software assets of OUYA, including its content catalog and online retail platform."

Razer will be relaunching the OUYA store under the name "Cortex for Android TV," though it will additionally be publishing "Android TV content and Android-based TV console games under the OUYA moniker as a separate interest." As for the OUYA console itself (and its poorly received controller), Razer has stated that it "is not retaining interest in OUYA hardware or related other assets." Financial details of the purchase were not disclosed.

In addition to buying the OUYA name, software, and digital storefront, Razer has hired the Android game console's technical team and developer relations staff. It does not seem, however, that OUYA founder Julie Uhrman will be joining her staff once the transition is complete. In a long series of tweets this morning, Uhrman sent thanks to those who supported the project before saying her goodbyes to her team:

Towerfall was one of the only breakout hits of the OUYA console.
Towerfall was one of the only breakout hits of the OUYA console.

According to Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan, the company is deeply invested in creating a successful TV-based game console built on the Android platform. Tan hopes to build on foundation built by OUYA, stating that "[the company's] work with game developers, both triple A and indies, went a long way in bringing Android games to the living room and Razer intends to further that work." Tan also notes that there will a "migration path" for OUYA owners to transfer their digital games onto Razer's on Forge brand "micro-console."

I could see how this acquisition seems strange. Given the OUYA's lukewarm reception, what makes the company (and even more broadly, the idea of a dedicated, Android-based game console) so attractive to Razer?

The answer is that Razer wants access to a potentially very large Chinese market. In this press release, Tam states that "Razer has a long-term vision for Android TV and Android-based TV consoles, such as the Xiaomi Mi Box and Alibaba Tmall Box, to which OUYA already publishes.” Both of those streaming boxes launched in China in the last year. In an interview with Polygon's Brian Crecente, Tam explains that Razer already does a great deal of business in the Chinese market, hoping to "amp up" the spread of Android games in China.

This all comes just a day after China fully lifted their fifteen year long ban on the production and sale of video game consoles. It's unclear if that ban would've restricted the Android-based consoles that Razer was planning to make, but it's certainly one less concern to be worried about for the company. Lots of has been written about the potentially emerging entertainment market of China, but only time will tell how initiatives like this will play out.

I was going to end on a joke about how, whatever the future holds, we can be sure that Razer's build quality will at least be better than OUYA's, but then I remembered that just last week, Ultra Street Fighter IV Champion Momochi nearly had his championship run ruined by a technical failure of his Razer stick. Whoops. (That said, I'd still rather play a fighting game with a faulty Razer stick than with the old OUYA controller. Can you imagine doing a dragon punch on that thing?)

Isn't the latest Nvidia Shield console basically a better Ouya? If so, I guess that's what Razer will be trying to compete against with the Ouya... except, oh wait, Razer already has an Android TV Console, the Razer Forge.

So what's the point then?

Most of these company buyouts are to get people and patent portfolios. Basically lawsuit protection.

Bought a Razer mouse and it was terrible. Worked on almost no surface in the house, forced you to sign up to an online service just to assign a couple of buttons (that didn't work well any way), and it broke in under a year. Am now using a mouse that cost one third what the Razer did, a g300, and it's the best mouse I've ever owned. I should really get around to stockpiling a few spares.

So yeah, Razer and OUYA seems like a match made in heaven. May they enjoy many years of duping unsuspecting schmucks together.

The ban did was not on Android based consoles since they have released couple of them. If they try doing something like that it will flop since the competition is endorsed by famous people and that matters. Only option would be targeting lower income households but they may not be interested in that type of product. I just cannot see a way for it to succeed on that market when the phones are the way people play that type of games (being playable on the go is important).

You guys need to read the article more. The article mentions that the OUYA storefront exports to android devices that have already been selling in china for a year. They're basically buying an online storefront that the Chinese are already using. It's probably pretty smart, compared to what Microsoft has been doing over there.

Dam it, Logitech were poised to announce the acquisition of the Hula Hoop and the Space Hopper today but it looks like Razer stole their thunder in the faddish junk acquisition stakes.

In similarly important news, I bought a Snickers last night

I'd like to hear more about this.

Well, it was King Size and acquired for the paltry sum of $.50. I finished it in about 5 minutes with some milk. It has since left my body. Overall I'd say the whole experience was slightly more entertaining than playing blown up Android games on a tv.

Full Disclosure: Austin's a sharp cookie.

I kinda feel bad for the Ouya team. It's one thing for a console to fail. It's another thing altogether to see enthusiastic people have their hopes dashed.

While this seems like totally meaningless and unimportant nonsense, it's interesting to see an American company targeting the Chinese market. Maybe this is one step closer to being less completely and totally economically dependant on Chinese imports?

I don't know. I don't know literally anything about the economy or foreign policy or have even the slightest sense of the scale of this stuff, so this is probably a lot less relevant than it seems to me on the surface.

I'm surprised OUYA found a buyer at all. What value do they offer? They proved they couldn't convince anyone they want a cheap android based console.

They convinced hundreds of thousands of people, the problem is that couldn't deliver on those promises.

I wouldn't go so far as to call what was likely a lot of sales uneducated consumers at Target and Wal-Mart "convincing" people.

I guess the fact that someone saw some worth still in the company is a fine eulogy.

For everyone that owns one for the KS, well you own a bit of failed history. I would pack it up in the original box while you still have it, make sure as much of it as was original in the box...then put it shelf.

Oh the stupid Ouya. It was born in the primordial soup of stupidity. As it crawled out of the stupid soup, with a stupidly designed controller trailing behind it (buttons stuck in and batteries inserted in baffling ways), it felt a sudden tug and then toppled over. With little effort, the stupid Ouya was felled by the weight of it's own stupidly short HDMI cable.

Unable to properly right itself, the stupid Ouya stayed there motionless until Razer's Min Tang happened upon it's cube like body. The stupid Ouya thought to itself for a moment that Min was indeed it's righteous savior, until Mr Tang reached inside its body and ripped out its soul.

I am equally as stupid for buying one of these Kickstarter editions. And so is Notch (The 85th backer).
