Portal 2 Pushed Back Into 2011

'Safety concerns' cited as the cause.

Don't expect to play Portal 2 this holiday. Valve has announced that the follow-up won't be released in November 2010 as planned. The studio is now expecting the title to hit at some point in 2011.

No actual reason for the delay was cited, but continuing with a tradition that kicked off a week ago, the witty release explains that Valve and Aperture Science are blaming "safety concerns" as the cause.

Yes, please.
Yes, please.
The release also notes that the "surprise" planned for E3 (this isn't it either) has nothing to do with an extra Left 4 Dead 2 episode, Half-Life: Episode 3, Source Engine 42, or Portal 3. It will be "PORTAL-2-THEMED-FOR-GOD'S SAKE," says Valve. Real talk.

== TEASER ==I don't like publishing press releases, but like last time, this is just too good not to share. Note the comment about the original Portal winning four trillion rewards despite not making its original release date.

Aperture Science, doing business as Aperture Laboratories LLC, in partnership with Valve today announced the successful completion of an ethics-review-panel-supervised release date restructuring process. Portal 2, the sequel to the ground-breaking title that earned over 30 Game of the Year awards despite missing its original ship date, is now targeted for a 2011 release.

Representatives from both companies acknowledged that public safety concerns factored into the decision. They went on to say that even though Portal 2 will arrive slightly later than planned, all life on earth won't instantaneously stop as every molecule in your body explodes at the speed of light, which is what would happen should a rip ever appear in the fabric of Valve Time.

"Also, the game will be even better," they added, missing an historic opportunity to create the first product delay press release to mention that a product is being delayed to make it worse.

To ask questions about how close we all came to dying, or to ask futile questions about the previously announced E3 ***PORTAL-2-THEMED-FOR-GOD'S SAKE*** surprise or, less futilely, to schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's delegate to the EU's Valve Time Studies Group, [ED. REDACT]

The suprise is that StarCraft 2 has been delayed again. I am not sure why Valve would announce that but that's my guess.

I was hoping the surprise would be related to EP3 but we all knew it wasn't going to be that.

I like the idea of them taking their time but I don't understand what could take this long. Anticipation is like a rubber band and if you take it too far, it snaps, or in my case, I don't give a fuck.

I still don't know if this actually means the game is actually delayed, it could all just be one big mind-fuck game.  For all we know they intend to do an "orange box 2" and its gonna hit q4 2010, though maybe not. :p

This makes sense I think.

Expected. But that's fine; Valve knows what they are doing.

i'm not a huge fan of Valve's titles, but Portal was their only IP I cared much for. Oh well, at least it's going to be better, right?

Yes. Now I won't have to hear any talk about this game until next year.

I liked Portal -- it's a neat little game with above-average puzzles and mildly amusing writing -- and I'm sure I'll like Portal 2 as well, but I cannot stand listening to people talk about it like it's the second coming of Christ.

It's kind of like Halo. I have nothing against the game itself, but the fanbase makes me wish it was never even developed.

@capthavic:  Pretty much.  If they're not sure when a game's coming out, don't put out a date in the first place.  Let it be said that it was Valve who coined the term "episodic content" and promptly cocked it up.  If they wanna take hella long to put out games that more competent developers can do in two years, that's on them, but don't be surprised when people ask where the sequel to Ep 2 is or why every game they announce gets delayed 4+ years.

Oh my god, a Valve game is delayed from it's originally-announced release date?

Seriously, I think Left 4 Dead 2 was the first time ever that Valve actually announced a date one time and kept to that season, if not calendar year.

Still can't wait for Valve's next game - they are masters of the art.

As for Episode Three, I don't think it's going to happen this year, but if it is announced next week, I will probably shoot my wad in my pants.
