Rare's Gold Logo Gets a Facelift

It will be missed. Probably.

Rare's signature "R," that upside-down sock with a chunk taken out of the heel, will no longer be the biggest part of the British developer's logo. Rare has rebranded, its old-school logo overhauled, giving off a fresh, cool, and simplistic vibe probably characteristic of what we'll see from the creator in a post-Natal world.

The switch also reminds that Rare is still around. Its last two big console releases, Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, while well received, didn't fair well financially.

According to the press release, Rare believes "the timing is perfect" to show off its new look. This summer will mark the 25th anniversary of the developer, after all. "Both Rare and the games industry have seen massive changes over the past 25 years," studio head Mark Betteridge said in a statement, "and right now it feels as if both we and the industry are continuing to evolve at an ever-increasing pace.

No Caption Provided
"With this landmark anniversary coming up, and knowing that we have a really exciting future head, we felt now was the time to have a new image more in keeping with an innovative and creative entertainment company which aspires to be around for at least the next 25 years!"

Over the last 25 years, Rare has released a serious amount of games. Rare was responsible for Jordan vs. Bird: One on One and the NES port of NARC. It also handled or created a bunch of franchises including Battletoads, Killer Instinct, Donkey Kong Country, Banjo, Perfect Dark, and Viva Pinata. Rare made us tape cardboard onto our televisions to prevent Goldeneye 007 screen peeking, and got us scratching our heads over Conker's Bad Fur Day.

The new logos  (via Develop) are forward thinking, for sure. My gut tells me it's okay to like 'em. My gut also told me that Alpha Protocol was flat out going to rock, too. I don't know if I like my gut anymore.

The fate of Rare is a sad story. I wonder if they will ever be relevant again.

As Graphic designer, I think they missed a few typographical oportunites here, that sideways sqaure, a captialised A, just saying. A clean solution I guess.

The old one seemed outdated. This one, while a little bland, is better.

In a time where massive companies are making sure they have a recognizable, memorable, and well known logo they decided to change theirs. to a bland unrecognizable and unmemorable logo. That logo makes me think I'm buying financial computer software.

New logo, none of the people that made them famous still working for them.

Having said that, GIMME A KILLER INSTINCT ANNOUNCEMENT MOTHERFUCKERS, and don't you dare brand that game with that pink logo, KI AINT GIRLY!

Nothing wrong with it, I liked the gold logo but this is good too. Regardless, it's just a logo.

At first, it was the Pixar to Nintendo's Disney.

Then, it was Microsoft's master plan to get Nintendo gamers to get into the Xbox.

And now, they are going to be making Natal games.

Not that it's a bad thing, or anything.

It'll look better at the startup screen for the game, people. It's not like you're going to see that exact same windowed picture that the OP has.

I like it a lot.  It's much more current while still remaining somewhat classic.  The old Rare logo was great, but it was very dated.  It screamed '90's.

It makes the name of the company easier to read for those who get confused with a weird symbol on the game box, and color coding might be to tell the consumer what type of game it is, kinda like how Nintendo puts up an orange bar with text saying what kind of game it is for their casual games.

Tape cardboard over the screen to prevent screen peeking? Wouldn't that just make it so the other people playing can't see what they are doing?

You'd think they are more focused on developing games than wasting a press release on logos.

Looks too much like a bank logo. Or maybe it looks like the logo for an insurance company you'd see commercials for during the Price is Right.

I am gonna miss the old Rare logo. It reminded me of all of those interesting games Rare made for the n64. But then again, Rare hasn't been the same for some time now.

the logo is just like the company used to be good then became dull and generic gg another game company that is just there instead of making good games like they used to, or at least making games that people actually care about anymore

Well that's totally lame.  Rare's logo used to stand out, but now it looks like just another random company that gets a credit at the beginning of a game.

I like it.  The old one was just so... retro at this point.  I didn't think it really flew anymore.
Now if Rare could stop re-designing its logo and actually make a game, everything would be cool.

Rofl their new logo looks professional but maybe a bit too much. I like their old logo as it represented the type of games they made.
