Rock Band 2 Says Tomato, Guitar Hero World Tour Says Tomato

Some side-by-side comparisons of songs found in these two competing rhythm games.

There's been no avoiding the comparisons between Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour, which is fair, considering they're essentially the VHS and Betamax of rhythm games right now. Ever since the overlap of songs found in both games was revealed, it has seemed all the more justified. Now that Guitar Hero World Tour is on shelves, we can actually see and hear the differences for ourselves, and intrepid YouTube user Gurra100 has wasted no time in posting a lengthy series of comparison videos of a number of the songs that the two games share.

I'm actually a little surprised by how similar many of the note patterns are, simply because it seems like, for all their similarities, the two games definitely seem to have some pretty fundamentally different design ethics. It's an interesting comparison, though honestly, if you're at the point where you're looking to variations in note patterns to decide which game is right for you, you've probably long since lost track of the big picture.

I Don't get how you can tell. On the right side, I see loads of notes flying at the screen. On the Left side, I see loads of notes flying at the screen. You must have to be super dedicated to notice any real difference.

And anyway, it's like Ryan said- who cares about the slight differences in note patterns, it really does not affect the game that much (especially when they're apparantly so similer).

They are a lot similar than they used to be, but all watching that video achieved was proving to me how much I hate the GH art style now. Rock Band is slicker by far, and I love that.

I suppose given that you only have a certain number of plastic drums and a certain number of guitar frets with which to emulate the experience of playing the song on the actual instrument similar note patterns are going to appear, but I do see a bit of an unusual similarity, not enough to really bother me though.

I would hope they are similar, if a guitar goes raw raw raw raw raaaa, I would want the notes representing the song to be in time with that strumming/drummin whatever.

But I can't actually tell if they are because my eyes don't work that way.

As for which notes they use, well the drums are a different setup I guess, but it's always just closer to green for low pitches and orange for high. Just like real!

But these games are an attempt to replicate a song on what are essentially the exact same control schemes. If they truly are representing the songs, especially on expert/hardest, note for note, chord for chord, and beat for beat it would certainly be quite similar if they are doing it right.

Your not going to complain because both games are telling you to sing the same words.

You can't really have too many differences between 2 games for same song. It is the same song after all. Huge differences would mean that one of the games is not tracking song correctly.

Gh is more fun in my opinion. the tracklist is so much better when you are actually playing it, surprisingly.
I'm still not abandoning Rock band, they both have a place in my heart.

The note patterns need to be right. Rock Band seems to have the notes in all the right places while Guitar Hero fucks  up the notes on some songs. Anyway the new guitar hero just feels cheap in  general, or does after playing rock band. Online sucks  ass on Guitar Hero World Tour compared to Rock Band. And the background character seem retarded while playing their instruments. What the fuck is wrong with the lightning in that game  when you use star power? it kinda fucks up the songs. I don't know... not a big fan of guitar hero anymore (after playing the rock bands). Only good thing there are some nice songs from tool, ozzy, jimi, filter, etc. Also the new feature where you can hold a note and still keep hitting others, like in real life, is a great feature.

Guitar Hero World Tour: 4/5 (also, the bass is pretty rocking in this game, makes it more challenging and fun. the game it self is not of much high quality)

Rock Band 2: 5/5 (but it needs the feature where i can hold notes or a note while being able to hit other notes. what this game does, it does it well. it has the good quality feel to it that guitar hero lacks. good sound also.)

I own both, check out my gamertag: Metamorph1c

"if you're at the point where you're looking to variations in note patterns to decide which game is right for you, you've probably long since lost track of the big picture"
Well in these games you are constantly hitting damn note patterns, and if they are too retarded then, yes, it matters. But maybe not enough to choose a game over the other. It is part of the "big picture" though.

Neither game is out here yet so I can't say anything about them. But I think I'll just get Guitar Hero, since I think that Rock Band is way too easy and I never really liked the drums. So Guitar Hero with a guitar it is... I think :P.

Skrutop: Huge Catalog vs. Create-a-song. I chose huge catalog.

But it's more like this.

Huge Catalog of covers no one really cares about VS. Better instruments, more features like create-a-song and guitar hero tunes, the guitar hero name which will carry more weight when it comes to future DLC, higher difficulty, and the ability to PLAY ROCK BAND SONGS WITH THE GUITAR HERO INSTRUMENTS!!!

I chose RB catalog and all those new features.

Last November I rented both Gh3 and RB to decide which to buy and realized RB had much more polish and song appropriate note tracking. Also GH 's ugly character models make my eyes bleed.

Of course they are similar. They are RHYTHM games! You can't stray too far from the actual riffs or beat of a song, which is great because it helps to get rid of a lot of the fan boy arguments that pop up around things as trivial as rhythm games.

For someone who's colourblind (yeah, you're not the only one, Jeff), Guitar Hero's fretboard can be a pain sometimes. There were only one or two characters I could use reliably in the last game because the patterned boards were too busy and occasionally notes would get swallowed up in them.

Now if I could deploy star power constantly and keep them white and glowy, that would help. Until then, having a nice clean fretboard for the notes a la Rock Band is a much better solution for me. Plus, I don't have to deal with Activision.

All I know is that RB never got the timing perfect, and those DR MARIO pillboxes are horrible. Just horrible. Why use a silver color at all?

I couldn't even focus on both note tracks enough to see any differences or similarities. I guess I'm just slow.
