Giant Bomb News

Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

Giant Bomb has suffered a profound loss.

Ryan Davis passed away on July 3rd. He was 34.

Obviously we’re all stunned over here. Ryan was a good friend to all of us. It’s odd to remember that, for someone who could be so acerbic at times, and despite knowing him for almost a decade, I honestly don’t recall ever actually being mad at him. He had an unconventional type of kindness that expressed itself more strongly the longer one knew him, and despite his teasing nature, he always managed to make his close friends feel loved when his attention turned towards you.

Many of you know that Ryan was recently married. In the face of this awfulness, many of us will at least always remember him as we last saw him: outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold.

The consolation we can feel from that is miniscule compared to the hole that Ryan’s absence will leave in our lives. That’s not a hole that is possible to fill; it’s just something that we’ll just have to get used to walking around with, and that will not happen for a long, long time.

After so many years of listening to these guys, they are like family to me. I'm just sort of sitting here reading reaction tweets quietly. This can't be real. The guy just got married, for gods sake. This isn't right.

Dude what?!?!

I don't even.

and now

RIP Ryan.

Mat really puts it best, but I'll chime in: the guy was one of the biggest shit-kickers you could ever hope to meet, but the way he riffed, you couldn't help but laugh with him. Never hesitated to speak his mind or push this website to be better than it was or could be, and I have never seen anyone work harder at looking like he wasn't working hard.

Ryan Davis, you will be missed.

I cant even get my head around this, he was a part of all of our lives and it will never be the same without him. I can only imagine how awful this is for his close friends and family, my thoughts are with them.

This is stunning, and a major bummer for everyone who reads or listens to ay sort of video game media. I'm going to do the only thing I can do and go play some game.

I've listened to his podcast and followed his career with GiantBomb for so long that I feel like I've just lost a real friend. He will be missed for his kindness and humor and hours of entertainment he has brought to my life. Condolences to his friends and family. You will truly be missed Ryan Davis.

Wow, this is some unexpected and terrible news this Monday morning. I always found segments with Ryan entertaining. Without him, It will never be the same. Well, I will keep Ryan, his family, and friends in my prayers and I wish them the best during this difficult time.

Ryan's been a voice in my earbuds for almost a decade. Like others have said, we've never met, but I've felt more respect and admiration for these guys than just about anyone else. Ryan and the others have been a huge influence on my life and god damn it, I'm going to miss him. Rest in peace.

I am at a loss for words. I tried writing something several times, only to delete it. Things I could write later, perhaps. I can only say that I didn't believe this, even after coming to GB and seeing it posted. Thought it was some disturbed type of humor.

Realizing this is real, I'm actually bawling, over here. Ryan was part of my every day life for the last half dozen years. I looked forward to his acerbic nature, humor, and hard work. He was truly one of my favorite people that I've never met.

This is absolutely heartbreaking. I don't know how everyone will find the strength to carry on around here and I don't know what I could possibly do to help. He obviously will never be forgotten. He can't be replaced, either.

I just . . . how do you carry on about video games, after this?

I wish there was some sort of Twitch stream or Jar-Time or something going on right now. I need to hear other people talk about this... commiserate.

If someone does something for GB or Ryan's family or something, please let us know so we can contribute. It feels like there is some gesture we could offer or some real help we could offer... but... I can't imagine what that is.

I don't even know how to end this.

I am simply stunned by this terrible news. I am utterly in disbelief and part of me wants to believe it's some awful joke.

What a cruel turn of events, especially considering he was just beginning a new life with his wife.

I did not know Ryan personally, but felt like I did as I've been following him and the Giant Bomb crew since the old Gamespot days.

Ryan's personality and passion for video games will be sorely missed on the site.

My sincerest condolences to his wife, family, friends, and the Giant Bomb crew.

Rest in peace, Ryan. We will miss you.

P.S. Matthew, thank you for sharing the news with the community. I know it couldn't have been easy to write this about such a dear friend and colleague.

Rest in Peace Ryan.

Your diatribes and genius digressions in the Bombcast were always a highlight. You will be missed by every person that attends Giantbomb.

Giantbomb has become a big part of my familys life over the past few months. Between the podcasts and videos I feel like Ryan spent a lot if time in our living room. My girlfriend and I feel like we lost one of our own friends. Our hearts go out to Ryans family at home and at giantbomb.

Completely devastating. I'm so sorry for everyone involved. I haven't been able to concentrate on much since I've heard the news. I'm just at a lost for words. I've gotten so used to seeing him every week in videos/podcasts/whatever and just getting to know his personality so well, for him to just be gone is insane. It's surreal.

Posted by lowfatevan

ugh, hearing about the passing of someone whom i've never met has never hit me so hard.

Summer Jamming so hard right now. Thanks for brightening up my commute every week with the Bombcast Ryan. You'll be missed.

Posted by Zuldim

This is shocking. I saw the headline over on Kotaku this morning just after waking up, and I thought for sure there had to be some mistake.

I've listened to Ryan in some capacity either though the latest Bombcast, old Bombcasts, Quick Looks, or something else on the site, almost every day for the past 4 or 5 years. RIP Ryan, my thoughts and prayers go out to the rest of the GB team.

Man, this really bummed me out.

I had a couple of really crazy interactions with Ryan at PAX, and I'm saddened I won't have the opportunity to have any more.

My thoughts are with you guys, and especially with Anna.
