Someone, Somewhere Says "Call of Duty 7"

Treyarch animator mentions COD7 on a social network profile page, and the crowd goes wild.

After a seven-kill streak you can create a black hole and automatically win the round.
After a seven-kill streak you can create a black hole and automatically win the round.
It sort of blows me away that people working on sensitive or unannounced projects still manage to let information slip in full public view. I mean, the Internet has been all Web 2.0'd up for awhile now, and there has been no shortage of people doing dumb things on the Internet that end up costing them their job or end up spoiling an unannounced product. But it still happens.

Today's case, the LinkedIn profile for David Kim, has already been cleaned up. But yesterday it said "I am currently on my second title as a senior animator in the games industry with Activision / Treyarch on Call Of Duty 7." Naturally, this touched off a flurry of stories from everyone with an interest in this sort of thing. Treyarch, meanwhile, is pretty much exclusively focused on a second map pack for its last release, Call of Duty: World at War.

Of course, the notion that there might be a seventh Call of Duty game isn't really much of a surprise, and it's also not a real shocker that Treyarch would be handling the development duties, either. Let's go out on a limb here and speculate... I think it'll come out in 2010 and will be based on the Modern Warfare 2 engine. And it will have guns in it. And it will probably be told from multiple perspectives. Multiplayer will be something of a focus. And it'll take place in space.

Oh, and Call of Duty 8 will actually be an accurate port of Strawberry Shortcake Musical Match-Ups. You heard it here first.

Not interested. A Treyarch Call of Duty game isn't a real Call of Duty game in my opinion.

This would mean that they are skipping CoD 6. I mean cause Infinity Ward isn't doing it, they ware working on Modern Warfare 2.

Treyarch should stick to doing what they do great.

To answer the question, "what do they do that is worth playing?" however should be saved for another time.

In other news, Activision is pubishing a new Guitar Hero game.  Hold your applause for the end of the presentation.

@neoepoch: Modern Warfare 2 = CoD 6.

"After a seven-kill streak you can create a black hole and automatically win the round." Hahahaha.

I really hope there is a COD in space. I think that would be really cool. But I also really hope Infinity Ward does it, instead of Treyarch. IFW wont want to do "Modern Warfare" games forever I don't think. They're too smart and too good to keep rehashing.

Activision on the other hand however....

The question of the numbering came up when the rumors about "CoD 7 being set in Vietnam" cropped up.

Here's a quick primer:

Call of Duty (Infinity Ward)
CoD 2 (Infinity Ward)
CoD 3 (Treyarch)
COD 4: Modern Warfare (Infinity Ward)
CoD World at War, AKA CoD 5 (Treyarch)
Modern Warfare, AKA (but not really) CoD 6 (Infinity Ward)
CoD 7 (Treyarch)

Good money suggests that CoD7 will actually have a subtitle instead of a number, to avoid confusion of how they jumped from 4 to 7.

I've never really appreciated an Activision CoD game as much as an Infinity Ward... so unless it's spectacular, in space with black holes, I ain't buying it I think.

If you haven't noticed already, crunchUK ain't the biggest of COD4 so it is more of a slight and not a technical nitpick.

And I am probably going to get tired of Call of Duty, and World at War was not that great. Infinity Ward is still the best.

It's amazing to think that this will be (more or less/depending on your point of view) the 7th Call of Duty game.

Why would Modern Warfare 2 be considered COD6? or 5 or whatever the hell you wanna call it...didn't they break off of the COD franchise to work on a new IP called Modern Warfare?

I'm only surprised that they're calling it 7.  I thought WaW wasn't CoD 5.  No one should be surprised that Activision will release a Call of Duty each year though.  They'll make me end up hating CoD like they did with Guitar Hero.

Like I said earlier, I suspect that CoD 7 is just an internal, tentative title. I'd be really surprised if that was the name the game rolled out with.

I don't like the idea of a Call of Duty being Madden-fied and getting a new release every year.  They should span them out more than that.  The two years between Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 seems like a good enough time that you feel like you are getting regular installments, but not to the point that they feel rehashed and stale.

What's with all of the Tryarch hate? WaW was a quality game. Not quite as good as Modern Warfare, but it was still a great game.

Treyarch isn't competing with Infinity Ward... They work for the same company..

I don't understand all this Treyarch hate.. Treyarch used Infinity ward's ideas and added to them. Nazi Zombies is a blast and I sure as hell hope that Infinity ward take's the Zombie idea and adds it to MW 2.

Would have been nice if Jeff cornered Josh Olin yesterday and asked him if he had anything to say to the community about all this madness. Also why the hell this Treyarch animator is calling it Call of Duty 7 when Infinity Ward have ditched the title and left it to the (by comparison) plebs.

It would pretty much have to be in space to keep things interesting, well actually even the Nazi zombie thing wasn't enough to keep me interested.  They should use the Duke Nukem Forever engine, in other words they should never finish the game.

But I hope that Treyarch just dies.

Bah, in that case I have nothing to look forward to. I don't have anything against Treyarch really, I haven't even played WaW apart from the beta; I just have no interest in WWII games any more - like most people.
