Sony's Trophy Mandate

Sony is looking to make 2009 the year of the trophy.

Trophy support, guaranteed!
Trophy support, guaranteed!
Support for Sony's PlayStation 3 trophy system has been pretty sketchy so far. I imagine this is due in no small part to the fact that up to this point, trophies have been entirely optional. I had heard grumblings from developers at E3 that it wasn't going to stay that way for long. Sure enough, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has, according to videogamer.com, stated that trophy support will be a mandatory feature for all new PlayStation 3 releases as of January 2009. Considering that this has been the case with achievements on the Xbox 360 since day one, it only makes sense, though I have to wonder if this will have an effect on the release dates of PS3 games set for Q1 09.

This is certainly a minor step in the right direction for the PlayStation 3, but it also feels like Sony's still playing catch-up. What say you, multiplatform owners? Does consistent trophy support give the PlayStation 3 version an edge?

I like achievements more than trophies.  Trophies don't have that same sound when you unlock one.

Also where's the Bionic Commando Rearmed trophies already?  They said they're were going to add them.   Curse you 360 for having a crappy D-Pad and making me get it for PS3!

Trophies are awesome but i didnt want  Sony to make games Have to have them its a bad idea, i liked the idea of just some games having trophies so there are still games without them and people still play them for 'gaming' sake. If all games feature trophy support then this will lead to a hell of a lot of trophy whores. It was nice that they where different form 360 achivements and where only in some games as extras....

Sure nice. Everything that gets you to master a game is 2D-era great. To get good at a game enhances the experience in the long run down memory lane whereas a game in which i killed the final boss while still figuring out which button pauses the game gets forgotten rather quickly. All hail to bragging if you have to do yourself the favour of earning the rights first.

Whether you prefer the PS3 or the Xbox 360, you have to admit that Trophies are a shameless rip-off of Achievements.

@BiggerBomb: And the NXE avatars are a shameless rip-offs of Miis, and Lips is a shameless Rip-off of Singstar (and a poor rip-off at that), and Let's go to the Movies is a shameless rip-off of EyeToy (and one of the worst rip-offs ever at that), and last (I think) but not list there is that shameless Buzz rip-off. So there you go, no one dare judge Sony by ripping off achievements.

Trophies and achievements don't pay the bills. So I could care less if if it's mandatory. If it's there, great, if it isn't, great. Doesn't change the game whatsoever.

Did I say that avatars were not a shameless rip-off? I'm not saying Microsoft is better than them, because of this, but at least with the avatars they actually improved the system and created a feature that is actually fun to use and more personal. Trophies, on the otherhand, are a really half-assed attempt to steal thunder.

It seems we made it to half a page of comments before we got into the bashing.  We can do better than that!

I like the idea of rewarding me for a game. I  can care less for an overall score or trophy level count. I do like that I can see what I've done in a game without actually having to put in the game.

I think mandatory support is a step in the right direction, but just like the PSN's online offerings, it's just too little too late.  I own both a PS3 and a 360.  When a multiplatform game comes along, I will always choose the 360... right now, graphics and sound are the same, but I already have 35,000 achievement points...  I want to add to that score, not start anew on the PS3.  It's too late.

I like trophievments because they give you something to aim for as you're playing through the game, but when it comes down to it they are completely meaningless. Its like comparing pubic hair collections. You might have the biggest collection but its still pubic hairs.

Yeah get on this shit Sony.

The lack of standardization for the trophy system has, up to now, rendered this feature more or less useless.

Not to mention laughable as an answer to the achievement system.

>> streaming netflix movies is the bomb.

I can do that from my PC, for free!

Holy crap a revelation! I don't have to pay $50 a year + whatever Netflix charges to have that privilege. Guess what? 360 did this for free before then as well, but you needed a stupid Windows XP Media Center edition PC for that ability.

Trophies are good. I don't mind them so long as I have the ability to designate that I rented the game to turn them off (something the 360 doesn't allow, but I can remove 0 gs games now, so... as long as I don't earn an achievement/trophy I can remove that from my games played). Future firmware update, please Sony?

Now, if they would make keyboard chat mandatory for online games (so I can actually tell people I'm freaking deaf), THAT would be a one-up over Microsoft.

On multiplatform games I too choose the 360 version.  Because of points, plus I can see what my friends are playing over live.  I think it's too late for Sony and the achivements

Trophies or Acheivements don't really mean anything to me. I kinda like the trophy design more though (B\S\G\P rather than points). Not worth delaying games over, but hopefully that won't be the case here.

Decent move on Sony's part, not really fair for devs to make acheivements for MS but laze out on trophies simply because it's not mandatory.

Not so much an "edge" but definitely some staying power. Theres no other reason i went back to play Uncharted then to get some sweet shiny trophies. Im not even an achievement hunter, but they are a great instigator of replayability, especialy when others can see what youve done.
Now if only theyd speed up the synch process and the time it takes to view someones profile, theyd be golden.

It may give the PS3 version an edge over those who only own a PS3 and not a 360 as well.  But for those with both systems, I think that they will be more concerned with their gamerscore than with obtaining trophies unless you can do something really cool with your trophies in Home.  Like decorate your apartment with all the trophies you've won or carry them around with you.  That will be cool.

I think Home is the difference. Granted it's had issues in getting out but Home makes the trophies something substantial and significant. And the people who are commenting on not being able to see how you've done in a game or compare trophies on PSN, click into your friends profile....see that tab that says compare trophies? Voila.

I dunno, I agree that it is a copy of achievements and that's fine. I don't think they expect many people to jump ship over because like has been said here, no one wants to start their score over. But for the people who don't have an XBox and aren't invested into achievemnt points, it's a good thing no matter how you look at it. The only negatives in this come from the people trying to make it flame war.

Good for gaming, good for people playing games, good for the industry as a whole. Enough said.
