StarCraft II Available For Download Now, Unlocks July 27

Retail'll never know what hit 'em.

When Blizzard finally revealed the July 27 launch date for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, it mentioned that the digital release of the game would be available shortly following its retail launch. Today, we learned just how short the timeframe between the retail and digital versions of the game really is: about ten hours.

Blizzard has announced that the digital version of StarCraft II will be released on July 27, the same date as the retail version. You'll be able to download and play the game the day it comes out. However, if you're dead set on forgoing the brick-and-mortar, there are a few things you need to be aware of.

Don't leave the house to buy StarCraft! Stay at home and enjoy a good smoke.
Don't leave the house to buy StarCraft! Stay at home and enjoy a good smoke.

== TEASER ==Here's how it's going down: right now, at this very moment, you can download the full StarCraft II client. The whole thing! And you don't even have to pay for it! It's free! Of course, you can't do anything with that client, because you technically don't own it yet; the StarCraft II download still needs to be purchased and activated on Battle.net, and those functions won't become available until the July 27 launch date. Yep, you can't even buy the digital release of the game until the 27th.

Furthermore, the online copies won't have activation access right at the stroke of midnight; that functionality goes live at 10 AM Pacific Daylight Style, so if you desperately need to inject StarCraft directly into your eye socket (so you can feel it faster!), the inevitable midnight launch at a retail store might be the way to go.

It's also worth mentioning that if you aim to take the digital road to StarCraft II, you'll only have access to the regular versions of the game; the special edition of StarCraft II will come in a box only, so if you're angling for exclusive multiplayer skins and a new pet for your World of Warcraft character (who isn't?), then you need to get that game in a box.

Oh, and all of your digital StarCraft-ing is going to go down exclusively in the Blizzard store and nowhere else; Blizzard isn't selling StarCraft II through Steam, GFWL, or any other online PC game distribution service.

But if you do jump through those hoops and abide by those rules, then you'll be able to download and play StarCraft II only ten hours after it's retail launch, instead of a day or a week later. Provided, of course, that the Battle.net servers aren't totally thrashed on launch day, making it impossible to get the game verified online. Which they will be. Because this is a Blizzard game

How are you guys planning to purchase StarCraft II? Is your Steam library large enough that you're fine with downloading a game? Or will you purchase SCII, like all of your PC games, from a retail outlet?

" Neat, but no Steamplay means no sale. I have to switch between too many computers to deal with some proprietary bullshit.  I'll get the retail box soon enough. Does anyone know if the mac and PC version are all included in one disc like past Blizzard games?  "
Dude you know you can DL Blizzard games as many times as you want on as many PCs right?  Once the code is on your Real ID, you can DL it a million times a day!  I own every Blizzard game and put them all on my Real ID, I can now freely DL them anytime as many times! "
Every blizzard game you say? I tried to add Orcs and Humans to my battle.net account and.. since it doens't use a CD key, you can't.    Really excited for SC2, might just buy the retail version for the sake of it. Still get to add it to my battle.net account to download on other PCs heh. "
If I send blizzard a picture of me holding my realID on a piece of paper, and a copy of The Lost Vikings, do you think I could just download it any time any place? A man can dream.

Anyway, the issue isn't how good or not a service like that is, it's just... I really hate the idea of keeping track of multiple digital distribution services, it's a bit of a nightmare and I'm still getting used to the idea of paying money for something I can't grab, so I generally get the box copy if it isn't on Steam. Though it's cool of them to let people download the client now, some people live both far away from retail stores and don't have the fastest internet. But I can run to the store and back faster than I can type my credit card number (no kidding, it's next door).

I haven't bought a physical PC game in...I actually can't remember the last one I bought. I have this REALLY bad habit of losing game discs, so the digital revolution is like sweet ambrosia to me.I shall purchase it...ONLINE!

Awesome, another game which is pulled out of the 90's, reskinned with a shinier coat and sold to the teeming masses at $60 a pop. The only reason I could see myself buying this is because of the custom maps that will be released by the communities (because honestly, evolves was the fucking bee's knees).

With Blizzard games you automatically get a digital copy of your physical game purchase. So no worries there.

I played the beta, Starcraft 2 is such a primitive garbage:

-twitchy animations
-no unit veterancy
-poor effects and physics
-horrible "flying" unit which are even horribly animated
-battles last a few seconds
-cartoony graphics

Practically all other RTS games are better, especially Supreme Commander 2 and Dawn of War 2.

The Blizzard store is damn expensive.

They are charging £29.99 for Wrath of the Lich King. I didn't see a single store charge more than £20 for it even on launch day. I got my copy, day 1, for £17.99.

I suggest just buying retail. Most retailers will ship the game so you receive it on launch day regardless.

Edit: I've no issue with digital games, in fact I prefer to buy most of my games that way. However if Blizz keeps up it's trend of being significantly more expensive than other stores, then I'm gonna buy retail. I'll pay a little extra on Steam for convenience when neccesary, but that price difference for Wrath is pretty damn large.

For those wondering what the min/recommended specs are; here you go! As far as I'm aware, if you full size the picture in my profile, you'll be able to see it in 1920x1080 and thus be able to read what is says.

Yeah, I thought that was the case. Here's the link to the picture.

They might do it like Steam preloads and have it be encrypted/not include small, but important files.

I really wish Blizzard would sell their games on Steam, but I guess they're too proud of their Battle.net stuff to do that.

I would probably buy SC2 if the multiplayer wasn't region locked, but not being able to play with my internet friends means no sale.

Because they have battle.net, and won't have any issue selling it through their own service. Any copy sold on steam, steam takes a % of the money.

Being a English site, I don't think it's proper to use a foreign language.    And the phrase 'QQ' can be applied to anything.  Just because it became popular in one game's forum don't mean it can't be used elsewhere.
