Steam Expands Store to Include Free-to-Play Games

"Free" games come to Steam, as Valve expands the platform.

Spiral Knights, one of the F2P released on Steam, looks like Diablo crossed with Phantasy Star Online.
Spiral Knights, one of the F2P released on Steam, looks like Diablo crossed with Phantasy Star Online.

Steam has been a terrific digital download service for players looking to buy both games at full price and games on the cheap. However, If you're the kind of game player for whom buying games "on the cheap" is still too expensive (or you live in a territory where retail sales aren't feasible in the market) then Steam has been ill-equipped to deliver the kinds of games you want to play.

Never one to let any potential PC revenue stream slip them by, Valve has announced that, as of today, Steam will support the release and distribution of Free-to-Play games in addition to the paid games already available from the service. With this new update, players can not only download F2P games from Steam, but also purchase each game's microtransactions from the Steam Client itself.

Along with the initial announcement, Valve revealed the first five F2P games available on the service. The first run of games are Sega's Spiral Knights, Cryptic's Champions Online, Hi-Rez Studio's Global Agenda, Perfect World's Forsaken World, and NHN's Alliance of Valiant Arms.

It's interesting to see Valve expanding on the types of payment structures it's willing to integrate and support through the actual Steam client. Thanks to games like Team Fortress 2, players on the PC are more used to purchasing the kinds of vanity/functional items that have been the lifeblood of other F2P games. Hell, it's possible that adding this kind of support to Steam paves the way for Valve to release Team Fortress 2 as a free multiplayer shooter supported solely by microtransactions. We'll find out more of what Valve has planned soon, as additional information on Steam's F2P integration will be revealed in the coming days.

I've been wanting to try Forsaken World for a while.  Since I have Steam already installed, I am all over that game this weekend.

As a Spiral Knights player who's seen the money people are willing to put into freemium games, I've gotta give Steam/Valve a "clever girl!" on this one...

Champions is a pretty bad game even if it's free. Don't know about the others.

I can't play those types of games. They keep all the neat things for cash and even give pvp advantages to the people with more money. No thanks.

Also you used 'than' instead of 'then'.

And 'additional' instead of 'addition'.

It's a hell of a game, though! Fun to play and great to look at, and totally enjoyable even if you don't ever spend a dime.

At least from what I've seen.

Hey, that's cool I guess. I played Spiral Knights a few months ago and it was a lot of fun. I stopped playing once I realised the weapon I spent a lot of time getting was underpowered and the devs showed no interest in fixing it (still hasn't been buffed yet). I further lost interest once they made a lot of things in-game twice as expensive and basically broke the economy. It was pretty great for a while though...

I immediately thought the same thing.

Also it's cool this stuff is in steam. I downloaded Spiral Knights and it even pulls info from your steam account (friends list and account info) so you don't have to set up an additional one. It's a pretty fun game too especially for being free.

Goddamn it, are these all MMORGPs? Where's I Wanna Be the Guy, or Cave Story (I imagine Steam could handle translation patches well), or La-Mulana?

Just been playing Spiral Knights with a couple of friends. Brilliant stuff so far and it 'seems' perfectly playable without spending any money unless you want to play it for several hours at a time.

It's a really cool mix of Diablo, Phantasy Star Online and Zelda: Four Swords. I'll definitely be dipping in and out of it.

Played a little Spiral Knights with a few friends and I've had a blast so far. The interface for managing friends is a little tricky but for what it is it's a really solid game.

Odd that EA pulled Crysis 2 off the Steam Store at about the same time.

Does that mean we won't see EA's free to play titles (Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield F2P etc.) on there?

I think I like Valve more as a game company than Blizzard now, I just feel that Valve does things for they're players and not for the money(although that's a part in it too) cause by having these games on steam more people login and see deals and stuff, where I feel blizzard just asks for money on anything, you want to change the appearance of your character pay 15$(completely automated system) + 15$ for your subscription, I'm not saying they shouldn't charge for some of these services I'm saying it shouldn't be that expensive. In conclusion I like Valve more(mostly the guys that work on TF2 and steam).

I don't think Valve is excited to put LoL on Steam when there's a good chance the main reason they're setting up this F2P system is due to the fact they're releasing a direct competitor (DotA 2).

I don't know but I'm really not looking foward to have to add one more client (Steam, Impulse, Batttle.net, GFWL and now this nu-eastore)

And I hope that crysis 2 isn't the first of the whole EA catalog

Steam has had great Free to play mods for years. It's great to see they're adding fully fledged MMO's to the list.

Games like Zombie Panic, and Age of Chivalry come to mind. Both of which are incredibly deep.

If Steam drops "Digital: A Love Story" and advertises it on this market, I believe the credibility of this addition will skyrocket. Think about doing that, Valve.

so the game i actually WANT to play (or try at least), Forsaken Worlds, was somehow corrupted acording to the launcher thing, so i pressed Verify... it warned me it would take a long time. this was last night before i went to work. 8 or so hours later, i get home and its still doing the Verification process...what the flying fuck? I closed the launcher, deleted the game and am now redownloading from steam, let's see what happens >_>

@MordeaniisChaos: That's why I pointed out TrackMania Nations; that's certainly a full free game.

I know the new thing about the Steam setup is the new stuff regarding the Steam Wallet use, but that's not what Kessler wrote:
  • " Steam Expands Store to Include Free-to-Play Games"
  • "If you're the kind of game player for whom buying games "on the cheap" is still too expensive...then Steam has been ill-equipped to deliver the kinds of games you want to play"
  • "Valve revealed the first five F2P games available on the service"
The article implies that free games on Steam is a totally new thing, and that's just not true. As much as I love Kessler, it's straight-up bad journalism.
