Symphony of the Night Composer Signs On For Skullgirls

Renowned composer signs onto this promising new 2D fighter.

Michiru Yamane, the composer of several  Castlevania titles (notably, of course,  Castlevania: Symphony of the Night), as well as other more whimsical joints like Elebits and beatmania IIDX, has signed on to do the music for Reverge Labs’ sharp-looking 2D fighter Skullgirls, the studio announced has announced.

In the press release, Yamane seemed stoked about the opportunity and noted the over-the-top, East-meets-West artistic direction in Skullgirls was a big factor in her decision to put ink to paper with the LA-based indie developer and its publisher, Autumn Games.

== TEASER ==“It was clear from the start that Skullgirls is something special, and I’m constantly seeking new and innovative projects to create for,” said Yamane. “After seeing the game’s distinctive artistic direction, and discussing its beautiful premise with Autumn Games and Reverge Labs, it was easy to be inspired."

“Because Skullgirls has such a unique style, it is important that the music both complements and adds to the game’s atmosphere,” she added. “I think fans will be very happy with the direction we are taking.”

Yamane left Konami and the Castlevania series in 2008 to become an independent composer. She got her break in 1998 with a composition in TWINBEE. Also, did we mention Symphony of the Night?!

Earlier this March, other Brad got a chance to sit down with two of Reverge’s developers and record a Quick Look EX of Skullgirls. As you’ll see, it’s a pretty flashy fighter that shares a thing or two in common with Capcom’s wilder creations.

Skullgirls is set to hit the Xbox 360 and PS3 this year.

It strikes me as odd that I know, and care, more about Skullgirls than about Symphony of the Night.

Still, this is probably good news, considering all the hype I've heard about SotN.  If Yamane was involved with the one Castlevania game I've actually tried (Harmony of Dissonance on the GBA, I think?), then I expect a great soundtrack.

Excellent music should go with excellent games. Granted, she had to work on some poor games back at Konami, but now that she has the freedom to approach anyone it's weird and disappointing that she's picked a team developing an ugly fighter that doesn't look fun, and that will most likely be forgotten by everyone days after its release.

By the way: I find it funny that some people always manage to make the Japan connection. "Well, she's Japanese so people who don't like this are obviously weeaboos". As if the exact same thing wouldn't happen if a great Western video game artist decided to go work on a mediocre-looking indie game.

Fucking idiot.

Surprised to see such ire over such a small game. At any rate, good to hear that they've got some talent for the audio stuff. The game doesn't look too great to me (though, I've only watched the quick look), but it's good to see such a talented composer getting work and she chose to work with them so it's not like she's being forced to work on a crummy game. Whatever, good music makes everything better and cool for Reverge Labs (or Autumn Games) for scoring a good composer to work with them.

Indeed. And if your world is so dramatically changed by the life decisions of a Japanese composer you don't even know, I'm pretty sure you've got some priorities wrong.

While I'm not doubting the two should go together, it's hardly the reality. Since gaming's infancy there have been many great pieces of music – some by noted composers – that have been paired with games that aren't up to snuff.

I don't think a fighting game in which every character is a girl is going to appeal to a lot of people, especially the testosterone-fueled Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat crowd.

Man, for such a small game this is getting alot of hate.

Personally I think it's great for an artist to work on what grabs their interest rather than stay in their old space. Hating on the game because the composer is working on it instead of something else is a little stupid.

ANd for the record, I'm excited for Skullgirls. Coming from GG and BlazBlue, I know Mike Z knows his shit, and knows what would make a fighting game fun and balanced. His name on this game really puts it on the map for me, that and the artstyle.

For the record, I think it's very rude and disrespectful to say you're "disappointed" in someone for working on a certain project. If she took this job, which probably doesn't even pay as much as some other opportunities, it means she really went out of her way to choose this job because she wants to work on it. She isn't your personal entertainer, she's an artist. She went out of her way to work on this any way you look at it, so please respect her decision.

As for the game, I personally know it's being created by a lot of talented people, and I'm very eager to see the end result. Games with an eastern-influenced art style really need good games like this to come out. Too many people dismiss western artists that have eastern influences.

I was excited about fighting games before a million of them came out. I draw the line at MK 9. It is the decades definitive fighting game. I will play nothing but MK 9 until SF 5 comes out.

It looks a little stale, especially given the current (amazing) 2D fighter climate.

I agree. Kinda crazy how many people lay it on with their crazy attitudes and hate from a short gameplay video when they themselves haven't even played it

As for Yamane, I think it's great she picked a low-key team with a not very known game. Means she has faith in it and that is a huge morale booster for the team.
