Take Two CEO Threatens the World With More Duke Nukem

Strauss Zelnick tells Forbes that 2K has future plans for the Duke Nukem brand.

Strauss Zelnick is, by all accounts, a pretty nice guy, especially as CEOs of major corporations go. But if it's one thing a steady diet of spy fiction and The Simpsons has taught me, it's that the nicest CEOs are usually the ones with secret plans for world domination and/or destruction.

Pictured: Strauss Zelnick, Take Two CEO and former circus contortionist.
Pictured: Strauss Zelnick, Take Two CEO and former circus contortionist.

Based on Zelnick's interview with Forbes today, it sounds like the next step in his plan to go all Hank Scorpio on the world is to move forward with new entries in the Duke Nukem franchise. When asked about future plans for the Duke Nukem IP, including any possibilities for film and TV off-shoots, Zelnick was quick to shoot down any immediate plans for other media, but did leave the lingering threat of future games wide open by saying, "We don’t really talk about it in detail but you will see future Duke IP coming from this company."

If that didn't just send shivers down your spine, I don't know what will.

Duke Nukem Forever has evidently been a financial success for the publisher, though whether or not that's relative to how much money was spent on the title over the last 15 years of development, we cannot be certain. At the very least, the game sounds like it's selling copies, in spite of largely negative reviews and significant audience criticism regarding the game's misogynistic, puerile, and sometimes downright nasty attempts at humor. The ensuing Internet kerfuffle has already led to insane people trying to bastardize science to prove the inherent "crappiness" of reviewers, and one PR person to commit career seppuku via Twitter.

Seemingly unsympathetic to the carnage already caused, Zelnick was defiant when asked for a reaction to the negative criticism associated with the game.

"...when we put something out I stand behind it, and will not compromise," he said, presumably while banging a fist down on a desk made from the bones of his enemies, while a shark swam menacingly in a tank behind him. "When you put all those things all together it’s difficult to be critical of the company. Because here in America, thank God, we have the ability to do what we want."

As a final piece of salient advice, Zelnick added, "What is there left to be said? I’m sorry if you don’t like it. Don’t consume it." On this point, Zelnick and the media would seem to be in total agreement.

Let's not get to crazy....Gearbox needs to focus on a good Borderlands sequel for now. Let Duke hang out in the back alley picking up skanks for now. Borderlands is a much more interesting ip to develop right now.

If they really want to do something with Duke....go grab the original Duke 3D...copy it piece for piece with a new graphics engine and do a full remake...add some more modern multiplayer modes and call it a day in my opinion.

Is US freedom of speech more free than my UK based free speech? I see Americans mention it an awful lot.

serious question: do any us folk here actually think they are more free than a lot of the world?

As I've often associated Modern Warfare as the Micheal Bay adaption of video games, is Duke Nukum destined to be the 2 1/2 men? This will not sell well be the video game gods kind. If mister Zelnick's statement is any indication of sales, the over abundance of first person military shooters may be joined by low brow toilet humor games. And thus, the video game gods will have forsaken me.

Yeah... I'm with a lot of other people. I won't mind another one, but I want a better one. The character as an idea is fine... they just need to put a more effort into making it a better character, or almost eliminate his character like Croteam does with Serious Sam.

I mean... whatever I guess? I had an alright time with it. It ain't perfect, and yeah... sections of it are boring and devoid of combat. I still like it better than Army of Two.

I don't see a problem with more Duke Nukem. Wrapping a real game around that character seems okay.

At least it's a character with personality instead of Generic Tough Guy Shooter Protagonist A or Generic Tough Guy Shooter Protagonist B.

Is anyone seriously surprised by this? With DNF out of the picture Gearbox can make a brand new game without all the 3DRealms baggage. I'm looking forward to another Duke game, hopefully it will be of the quality of Gearbox's other games.

Keep Brousard far, far away from the game and have the guys who did Bulletstorm (if they could snipe some of epic's staff) or Borderlands handle things and I think there could still be a good game there.

Also, I love VinceNotVance's idea of basically having everybody hating Duke and him having to redeem himself in the next title. Over the top, cartoonish characters benefit greatly from being the fish out of water in a world that doesn't understand them (like the first Austin Powers). Basically make the whole game a rip-off of demolition man and I'll throw them my money.

Oh Take-Two, you so crazy. Wait, what if they gave Duke to Rockstar....!! Ok, maybe not, but TT does have some very strong studios that could do great things with the license.

Yup, this.

The day the sequel to DNF comes out and is exactly as boring, non-self aware and ugly looking as DNF is the day that I regret supporting these guys with my money. Until then, I'm fairly optimistic for the future of this franchise.

Add me to the list of people wanting a game where Duke is a creepy bigoted alien-blasting savant that everyone reluctantly puts up with.

I just wanted to add to your idea of crowds loving games where characters constantly try to impress/live upto or make amends for past mistakes in funny ways. Guybrush threepwood anyone?

Maybe I'm touting my own horn with this idea but I always found guybrush's attempts at impressing people and miserably failing, but then trying again to again be shot down very endearing.

He was a douche (in the lame sense, not the asshole sense) and people could smell his douchiness from miles away and would then in fact run the opposite way to avoid him.

We the player could always see him for what he was which was the guy with the heart of gold and an ever present kids imagination, but the rest of the world thought he was just an idiot. Hilarious!

I don't understand how future Duke Nukem games could be bad simply because DNF was.
They could be great, if the development phase doesn't last 15 years.

I really think that Duke Nukem deserves all of the flack it's getting, but the companies who put it out don't. Gearbox was left with a disgusting, unplayable heap of a game and they did what they could to make it bearable. The load screens, which Gearbox most certainly worked on, are hilarious. Everything about DNF that's good, I like to imagine came from Gearbox and Take Two in some way, shape or form. More Duke? One more Duke game. I trust them with one more.

I'm enjoying Duke Nukem Forever. Besides the load times of course. Maybe it means I'm a bad person? I feel its mostly just like bad action movies though. The action is good enough and it moves quickly and the game doesn't feel broken. And while the humor is stupid, it's so stupid I can't help but chuckle.

I'm having a helluva fun time with DNF on the PC (using an Xbox 360 controller, lol)! I would love to see some sequels come out, but I hope they don't try to make them all "next-gen". It's the little touches like funky animations and weird textures that make DNF so endearing.

I think that if you make a game where duke nukem is somehow transported to the "real world", it could be a great comedy game.  Think Austin Powers with aliens. I think it would be fun to see that  character try to cope with the way the real world is as opposed to his warped world where everyone loves him.   At the end Duke realizes he doesn't want to live in a world where he cant get away with sexist remarks/ where everyone loves him.

I can't remember if it was on a bombcast or from the Gamespot days, where they were talking about what the franchise needed to do to bring the franchise into the modern age.

One of the things that stuck in my mind from that podcast was that Duke needed a female sidekick who was as crass (or crasser) that he was. Bulletstorm seemed to have taken that idea to heart, I think having an insane, foul mouthed lady shooting up aliens alongside you would temper some of the series' dated gender politics.

First, that picture is hilarious, I would like to know who convinced him to pose like that.   Second, I am wondering if Alex got that picture texted to him during a sexting episode.  Third, if Gearbox or Take Two actually makes the game instead of just polishing up a game that was started when most people on here were in school or diapers then it might be pretty good.

I think if Duke had been written better in the new game, I wouldn't hate him as much. This is coming from someone who hasn't played Duke 3D, but DNF just seems lazily written; some people might compare it to the laziness of a show like Family Guy, but I make the note that even Family Guy had a strong three seasons before it started to go downhill (though the start of Season 4 was also a smashing success.)

I'd play a new Duke if the script isn't written by the guy who wrote DNF.

Like others here, I'd enjoy a well designed Duke Nukem game-the idea doesn't necessarily send chills down my spine. After all, I wanted DNF to be good. If Gearbox or some other capable developer got to work on a new Duke Nukem game, I'm confident they could make something that'd be a blast to play and provide some chuckles, like Duke3D did. In any case, it wouldn't take much to make a better game than DNF.

I think their next Duke game will be much better received (still haven't played DNF yet!) since they will likely have a steady team work on it and complete it in a normal development cycle. If they are smart they will listen to the criticisms and make something awesome.

Oh yeah, while waiting for my rental copy of DNF to arrive, I replayed through DN3D (high res "atomic edition") and I really enjoyed it. The humour was awful, but made me smirk and I actually enjoyed the platforming and so on that's been labelled as "dated" in all the reviews. I predict I will enjoy a playthrough of DNF. I just hope the loading times don't turn me off...

If they could make it about a "pathetic" Duke that everybody just feels bad for like Jeff suggested, it could actually work really well. I really do, without irony, want to see the next Duke game tackle that premise.

I'm open to the idea of a brand new duke game, one that gets conceptualized, developed and released within 2 years so that the game doesn't feel 12 years old. DNF had a few moments where things worked, but the reliance on modern game mechanics and borderline offensive/stale humor really brought it down. i honestly see duke as a franchise with potential to be FUN again. so MORE duke doesnt sound so bad, just as long as its not more duke nukem forever

You said what I was thinking (but in a more succinct way). I don't know about Take-Two though, but Strauss Zelnick sure does!

Ultimately, I was always more interested in what Gearbox would do AFTER Forever. Wired's article about DNF after 3D Realms' closure (?) had me doubtful about it's quality when it was revived.

Having one female character in a sea of female-shaped objects doesn't necessarily say 'progressive' or excuse the general misogyny, it just says that the writing is aware of itself. The reason it worked in Bulletstorm was because Trishka was the only female (specifically meant to subvert the roles female characters are commonly forced into) and Hunt was kind of a fuck up.

Having a female character (or any character, really) in Duke Nukem stand toe-to-toe with Duke doesn't seem likely given how the story and character portrayal went. In DNF, at least, Duke's been propped up as a god with no equal.

Could everyone stop over reacting on the thought of another Duke game? I'm not saying you should be enthusiastic, or even care, but it's not cool to hate on duke anymore (or is it? I know I'm tired of hearing about it, and I didn't even buy or play the game)
