Telltale, Mojang Partnering for Minecraft: Story Mode

As Minecraft continues to evolve, it's also beginning to develop spin-offs.

No Caption Provided

Telltale Games was teasing an unexpected announcement yesterday, and while I'd hoped for an X-Files revival, the company, instead, announced a partnership with Mojang to produce Minecraft: Story Mode.

Coming to unspecified consoles and other devices in 2015, Minecraft: Story Mode is "set in the world of Minecraft, the series will feature an original story, driven by player choice."

Of course, Minecraft doesn't have any real characters or plot to speak of, but none of that's stopping Mojang from investigating a Minecraft movie, too. Minecraft's community should prove good inspiration.

Minecraft: Story Mode joins Tales From the Borderlands and Game of Thrones as part of Telltale's lineup in 2015. We already know Telltale intends to continue The Walking Dead, but it's unclear when season three will begin, and there's no word yet on a second season of The Wolf Among Us.

Until we learn more, I leave you with this:

The irony of these post is that Minecraft in its current sandbox - emergent gameplay form is actually way more of a game than most traditional videogames due to its huge possibilities of player choice.

And in fact game theory-design wise Tell Tale "games" are more like linear interactive stories. Talk about erroneous pre conceived notions of what a video game is or could be.

@fazzle It has no score, you can't level up, you can't kill stuff... It can't be a videogame!

Can you win Minecraft? No. Can you win (ie: finish) a Telltale game? Yes.

Minecraft is not a game, it is a toy or a creation tool.

I like the new Telltale games, but they really really shouldn't be working on this much at once.

What kind of story can be told from the minecraft universe? Granted I've never played minecraft, but I was under the impression that there wasn't really a story for it.

I'm genuinely interested in who approached who. A knee-jerk reaction would assume that Microsoft approached Telltale, but then I see the Borderlands game, and I have to imagine Telltale went after that one themselves. Maybe they just have a form e-mail they send everywhere.

I can't wait for Telltale's version of Resident Evil and Deus Ex.

Notch won at life by creating Minecraft (itself being an abstracted simulacrum of life) so that everyone else can pretend they own a $70 million megamansion :P

@bargainben: I don't think its being added to the game, just a Minecraft set Telltale game, called story mode to be cute. I wonder if it will do much better than their other series, it's not like GoT and The Walking Dead aren't popular. Maybe I'm underestimating Minecrafts popularity, but I don't think a seven year old thats into minecraft is going to want to play Telltale's style of game.

I hope this isn't a sign for what Microsoft has in mind for the future of Minecraft. They may be missing what it is that makes Minecraft great.

Seriously, these are great news, i always wanted to try minecraft, but the idea of not having a certain goal turns me off..

This is why i love Starbound, it's a randomly generated game with a fun quest line, if you haven't tried starbound yet then i recommend checking it out.

Meanwhile..

Markus "Notch" Persson recently set a new record, this one outside of the gaming community: The Minecraft creator just bought a sprawling mansion in Beverly Hills, California, for $70 million.

It is the "highest price ever paid for a home in Beverly Hills," according to a press release from John Aaroe Group, the luxury real estate firm that sold the property. Curbed LA reports that Notch beat out none other than Jay-Z and Beyonce, among other interested parties, for the house.

@finaldasa: If you see people making their own stories in this game as a "void" I think maybe you don't get this game. Making your own story is the game. That's not a void to be filled. The new people running Minecraft don't understand why it makes money so they're adding conventional tangible things they do understand (that miss the point of the game). I have to imagine the people who own Minecraft now might have seen the main thing that made the game popular as a "void" to be filled, like you did, and that's distressing for the future of the IP.

Yep. This, pretty much. Here, we see the beginning of the end of Minecraft. While not my sort of thing, I could TOTALLY see why people were into it. Clearly Microsoft can't, and it'll be the end of the franchise.

Not the end of the concept, however. I think we're going to see another company with a clone or an evolved take on the original idea snatch the mantle from Minecraft in the coming years.

Minecraft:story mode? Is that really the title? thats lame

It's likely a reference to Minecraft's game modes. Within Minecraft you have Survival Mode (the default game, where you can do whatever you want [up to and including "beat the game". There is an actual ending to be had if one wishes for it]), Creative Mode (Where you have infinite of all the blocks, do not need to mine, can fly, and are invincible), and Adventure Mode (where you cannot break the vast majority of blocks, but can interact with the interactive blocks like levers, buttons, and the like). This being named Story Mode tells you exactly what audience they're expecting to be interested, I feel, and keeps to an internal theme.

It is, still, a pretty lame name, even knowing the rational behind it.

Don't forget the part where he slams another company for the exact thing only a few months before he does it.
