The First Ring Is The Deepest (But The Second And Third Sort Of Suck, Too)

It's been a good run, Xbox 360 Elite, but away to repairsville you go.

This is my red-ringed Xbox! There are many others like it, but this one is mine!
This is my red-ringed Xbox! There are many others like it, but this one is mine!
While all around me has been chaos, I've had a pretty good run with my Xbox 360 hardware. While everyone was running around like maniacs, investigating the Xbox 360's supposedly shoddy hardware, I was sort of quietly hanging out at home, getting achievement points and wondering what the big deal was.

Well, today's the day I join the rest of the world. My 360 Elite decided that the multiplayer mode of Quantum of Solace was too much for it to handle, so it locked up, filling the screen with a checkerboard pattern of static. I got it to come back up after that, but it locked up while I was looking at my avatar. After that, it refused to acknowledge that I had the Bond game installed to the hard drive of my 360 and tried to run it off the disc. So I deleted the installed game and went to reinstall it. At around 25 percent, the 360 essentially said "dude, what did I tell you about this James Bond nonsense? He's a spy! Shouldn't he be doing spy stuff instead of running around in a first-person shooter? Going third-person when you take cover doesn't count, either! That's just so they can show off their Daniel Craig model! I swear, this is all GoldenEye's fault!" Then the screen went black.

Red rings, baby. Three of 'em.

I... might be putting words into my 360's now-silent mouth. I can't remember for sure, everything happened so fast.

The awesome part about having it break tonight is that the Microsoft customer support center is currently working on upgrades. So you can't register consoles or file new repairs until tomorrow. When it rains, it rains, brothers and sisters. When it rains, it rains.

Oh, pours? Well, whatever. You get what I'm saying.

This is the first 360 that I've owned that's given up on me, but I guess it's technically my second or third Xbox. Weirdly enough, the console I got a week or two before the system's official launch is still totally trucking, despite it now being used as a mobile loaner to friends whenever someone else's stops working. Speaking of which, Ryan, I need my Xbox back. My Japanese 360 is still going strong, I think. I don't know, I never really use it. Though I did buy Raiden IV when we were in Tokyo... guess I could finally bust that out and give it a try. Whatever, I'm going to bust out my launch-era PlayStation 1 and swap trick it to play some Tobal 2. Now that's a game, damn it.

To add injury to annoyance, that now-broken console is whitelisted for the NXE preview. So if I slap that hard drive onto any other system, it'll take the NXE update and be unable to get online for the next two weeks. That means I need to figure out where my old 20GB drive is and find a memory card, since memory cards apparently won't transmit the NXE updates to other consoles.

Whatever, I won't cry and moan about it, since everyone's been hearing people bitch about the 360 hardware issues for years now. I think that's one part of all this that worked out in Microsoft's favor--the problem went on so long and got so bad that everyone got fed up with all the people complaining about it more than they got fed up with the actual hardware issues.

Still... pretty bad timing. Oh well, I didn't really want to spend the rest of the night playing Quantum of Solace, anyway. Seems kind of dry.

My PS3 broke in August, and then it broke AGAIN in September. COD4 broke it both times... I finally got the damn thing back though.

I had mine crap out last Christmas (I had just gotten CoD4 and Rock Band 1 and was using the USB Hub for RB1 which may have screwed me in the long run). This brings the term "Red Scare" to a whole new level.....Gears 2 is out for us normal folk tommorow, and if my xbox 360 dies on me I don't know what I'll do. I basically built my weekend around playing that damn game.

My 360 died just the other day. Sucks coz i was happily playing my newly purchased copy of fallout 3 when the screen locked up and the dreaded red ring reared its ugly head. Only had it for a year and the only reason i bought it was because microsoft said they have solved the rrod issue.....apparently not.
Ah well....its on its way to be repaired now....just sucks that i dont get to play gears 2 untill it comes back :(

Having lost my first 360 to the red lights only hours ago, I certainly feel the pain. Damn thing lasted roughly two months. I managed to finish Fable II in time though, and I loved every minute of it.

Queen said it best : "And another one, and other one bites the dust, hey! it's coming for you, another one bites the dust."

The original Xbox also had problems, I was lucky enough to be able to sell my second broken one back to Gamestop when the 360 was here.

All I can say is we understand you and having to go though 3 360 and still having a working NES makes me wonder if they can make the next one at least a long term investment.

Thankfully, my Elite is still going strong, but it does sort of feel like a ticking bomb in my living room.  I live in Arizona, so keeping things cool in the summer is a problem as it is.  I borrowed one of my wife's cooling racks from her baking gear in the kitchen, and have the Elite standing vertically on it, so there is airflow to the underside vent.  This has worked very well so far.

Totally feeling the pain. My 360 red ringed on Fallout 3. I have however repaired it myself with the x clamp mod and she now runs like a dream.

I think the all out assault of fallout far cry and fable kicked it to death

I remember my first red rings of death, it was kinda a surprise and a shock, nowadays im always on edge, never know when it can happen again.

I'm pretty sure that is the reason why your elite died!

XBox owners never cease to amaze me...  Their attitude when the RROD happens is always something like, "It was a good run..." or "Good thing I bought a SECOND 360 in case this happened..." or "At least it was good timing cause of reason X, Y or Z..."

WTF???

This is the NUMBER ONE reason I will NOT buy a 360.  I would love to play some of the exclusives but I refuse to buy a piece of hardware I know will die prematurely (all hardware dies eventually).  I'll take my "graphically inferior" version of Fallout 3 (with no DLC) any day of the week over the 360 version.  I just can't believe the mindset of these 360 owners who accept this bullshit so easily.  Anyway, different strokes for different folks, I suppose...

PS - This makes me wonder how the worldwide sales of the system are affected by this...  It's got to be an inflated number as so many 360 owners are on their second, third, fourth etc. 360.  I'm not talking repairs, of course, since they wouldn't be counted as sales.  But I do know several 360 owners who have "happily" bought more than one 360 cause theirs died...

That sucks. Mine died a month ago and it took them almost a month to send it back. Maybe it will be faster with you. But with Gears 2 about to drop, and nxe coming in 2 weeks, this couldn't of been at a worst time.

and I'm on my 3rd xbox.

Jeff, I feel for you.  My Xbox died a little over a week ago after having those really hard lockups several times during Fable II, with the same checkerboard artifacting that you had described.  Thankfully, the process has been a bit quicker and smoother than my previous two Xbox 360 RRoD consoles, as you can make sure they send you an electronic label that you can bring to a UPS location and ship out yourself, to help cut down the time you have to wait for a "coffin" to be shipped to you, to then turn around and ship back to them.  Hopefully, you can get that NXE thing worked out!  Me, I've been living off of the PS3 for the past week a few days, but my Xbox 360 games are piling up... and I probably won't get back to them for another week.  But, absense makes the heart go fonder, right?

Welcome to the rest of the world Jeff =P At least you have several other 360's to play, not many people have a backup 360 to play while waiting for repairs.

I sent mine in a few weeks back to repair the RROD also.  But it still turns on intermittently... All I gotta do is smack it and it goes away again.  Its kind of like how Han Solo has to punch the millennium falcon to get it running from time to time.

Well, now we can make another rule:
"There are 2 things that are certain in life: You will die sooner or later, and your 360 will RROD sooner or later"

I feel you Jeff! My 360 just red ringed on Sunday, after me having played 10 minutes of Fallout 3. My first red ring, so now I can say I'm part of the cool club, and like you said, it isn't that big of a deal, when it happened to me, I actually laughed because I knew I was overdue.

I'm red-ringed right now and need to send my console in.  It's pretty painful with Banjo and Gears coming within the week.

I don't think those newer Falcon motherboards make a difference.  My brother's launch console lasted about 2 years.  My Falcon has died within the first year.  I think the consoles are just built like crap.  Perhaps I'll go play my NES or my wife's SNES which still work.

So you think the reason it red ringed is because your 360 was taking a stand against another Bond FPS?

I morned the death of my xbox 360 and remembered all of the fun times I had with it.
Then asked MS to repair it and send me a free wireless controller for my troubles - which they happily did for me.

Wow....Are you guys hearing yourselves and reading your own posts? I have had both systems at one time, PS3 and Xbox 360, and the reason why I only own one system, PS3, was because of this RROD bullshit. I had my console traded in for another one and repaired 3 times...I couldn't handle it anymore and since most games are multiplatform, I just decided to stick with my PS3..Yes I am going to be missing out on Gears of War 2, but the waiting period for repairs and paying for online for a broken system didn't cut it...Stick with a PS3...mine is still working regardless of many lockups it had..

I saw a video on the internet that showed the 360 ran really hot when you were not playing a game and it was on.  I was under the impression that it was really loud because the fans had to run to keep it cool.  I think that downloading games on to your hard drive could cause this to happen more. I am not going to do it right away so I can see what happens.
