BREAKING: Is Giant Bomb's New News Editor Starting Tomorrow?

With this important change in place, Brad will finally get to focus on his seafaring video games round-up while Jeff will... also wear a hat.
With this important change in place, Brad will finally get to focus on his seafaring video games round-up while Jeff will... also wear a hat.
I'm pleased to announce that as of Monday, seasoned newsman and all-around good guy Patrick Klepek will be joining the Giant Bomb team as News Editor. We've all thought long and hard about how best to expand our focus and provide higher-quality content for you, and adding Patrick to the team will bring exactly that. In addition to bringing his expertise to our current news output, one of the things Patrick will be focusing on is honest-to-goodness original reporting, ensuring that there are even more things on Giant Bomb that you can't find anywhere else.

Why news? Why now? Well, I should probably back up a bit.

Right around the time we started Giant Bomb back in 2008, I grabbed myself an RSS reader and subscribed to almost every single full-text gaming news RSS I could find with the idea that if we were going to start a site with no dedicated news person, I was going to need to be up on what's happening out there in the world. While we focused primarily on covering the games themselves, we'd dabble in news here and there, reporting things when they came our way and, more often than not, linking out to sites that were doing the legwork that we weren't. Beyond positioning some rugged soldiers like Brad Nicholson in direct path of the press release hose, It felt like it would be crazy to get into news. Other people--like Patrick, for example--had that buttoned up.

These days, I almost wonder if everyone decided that there's no money in news reporting or something. The sites that were fully devoted to it seem a little less focused these days. Some of them broke out and got into other types of content at their news team's expense. Others branched out into so much off-topic coverage that I had to cull them from my RSS feed. Still others straight-up vanished. Point being, I'm not getting as much news from the news sites as I used to, but the post count from these sites just seems to go higher and higher. I'm left with way too much digging to get to the important stuff from the authors that matter.

Actually, this addition also grants me more time to focus on reviews. Touchdown from all angles.
Actually, this addition also grants me more time to focus on reviews. Touchdown from all angles.
So I've decided to, in my own way, do something about it. We've all known Patrick for awhile and have crazy respect for the work he's done. Everyone's pretty excited about having him here. We've been tossing around names for potential news candidates for what feels like a year now, but none of them felt quite right. Once we began talking to Patrick about coming over here, it didn't take long for all of those other names to sort of fall by the wayside. He'll be working directly out of our office and we'll all be thinking about presenting you with the most important game news out there with the level of insight and experience that you've come to expect from us.

And we'll probably manage to have a good time while we're at it. That, after all, tends to be our way.

But enough about that. What I want from you right now is two things! First, join me in welcoming Patrick to Giant Bomb. Second, I think we all have some ideas about what an ideal news organization should look like these days, but I want to know what you think about it. How do you want your news delivered? Is text the thing? Should we develop some kind of weekly news wrap-up show? Call-ins? A daily podcast where the day's headlines are delivered directly to your earholes? Should we beam our news stories into space so that aliens can know about updated release dates and the reasons behind their favorite studio's layoffs? Should we rope Patrick into some kind of heinous Tested live show segment where he's blindfolded and eating some kind of awful "food" during his first week here? Like I said, let me know.

Welcome Patrick!

Since this is primarily a video oriented website I believe there should be a weekly video segment regarding news stories.
however this should not exclude regular text news updates as they happen.

Also I would like to add my support for roping Patrick into heinous tested live show like segment where he is blindfolded and made to eat some kind of awful food during his first week.
I believe this has become a right of passage ritual for all Giant bomb/Whiskey Media staff members.

cool, i think you should make a weekly news thing like your reviews with you standing on a green screen to present news. kind of like how the soup shows do, tosh.0, and other shows like that.

Monday is I love Mondays, tuesday is bombcast, thursday is TNT, Friday is Happy hour. I think Patrick should have a video news report on WEDNESDAYS!!!!! fill up the whole week with activities....

NO more podcasts because we arleadry have more or less 3 hours of podcast content, more video content would be nice..... but I don't know how complicated or expensive this would be.

Welcome Patrick -- I'm really happy to see more news on Giant Bomb instead of having to use that god-awful new kotaku layout.

For what it's worth, I would think the obvious text stories accompanied by a weekly video covering topics/angles different to the Bombcast news section; maybe on Fridays or just before of TNT. But please don't (and I'm sure you won't) make it a awkward one-man-in-front-of-green-screen thing -- I'm sure you'll come up with something very clever.

It doesn't matter to me what format the news comes in. What I want is depth in coverage, other video game sites (lets say an otaku focus) do not give me more information or depth about what they are covering. I like it when I listen to the podcasts and hear you guys talk about a certain topic  about video game development or tends in detail, that to me is really enriching and insightful. Thats what Giantbomb to me is about, that funny, great chemistry you guys have and the knowledge you have about the industry.

I like P atrick Klepek so this is great news. A news wrap-up show would be pretty awesome (I see Vinny toiling away on it in my head right now) but obviously I would be wary of it being detrimental to the other video content. I would be happy with a Friday comic-vine style weekly news show even if it wouldn't be the most timely thing in the world.

I gotta second this. Also I am totally stoked to hear that Patrick Klepek is joining the team. I've been a fan of his for years.

A weekly news video could be cool, but I think for the day to day stuff regular articles is sufficient.

Welcome and congratulations to Patrick, looking forward to your upcoming contributions.

Patrick Klepek is legitskies, even if he looks like a junior in college. I think news should stay in a text format, but don't let that stop you from roping him into stupid Happy Hour Tested segments.

Any news is good news.  GameInformer is maybe the only other news site I check that actually reports things.  Everyone else mostly posts image macros, boobs, action figures, or sale notifications.

On the topic of sales, though, I wouldn't mind like a little mini-tab or news-ticker somewhere that just listed the day's sales.  Maybe an extension of the wiki that allows people to share up-to-the-minute sales?  What I'm saying is, I LOVE ME SOME SALES, but they don't really count as "news."

This is great news. This has the potential to make Giantbomb the, all around, best gaming web site. The only thing gaming related I go elsewhere to get is news.

It sounds to me like a good idea to implements this is having it being a combination of test and video, that is, daily posts, and a weekly show.

Wow, this is great news.  I am so glad to see Gian Bomb expanding and even more proud that my subscription money has contributed.  Patrick is one of the best news hounds in this business and can only help to make Giant Bomb stronger.  I just hope that his talents will be used elsewhere on the site (podcast, reviews, quick looks).

Now that Jeff has more time, we can finally get around to that My Notebook endurance run.

Welcome Patrick!

I'm a big fan of video content, so I would enjoy some sort of video news wrap up.  I think it would be better if it was not part of the happy hour.  If you are planning on getting more news content could you break off previews from the news?  For some reason it always bugs me when there are previews in the news.

I also get enough podcast for my week from the bombcast, so I am not so hot on that.

Thank you for making Giantbomb awesome!

Woo!! The best thing about G4 will now be part of the GB crew. I'm totally on board with this.

As for the news, something akin to IGN's daily fix but maybe weekly would be great for getting an overview of the weeks events. It would allow for easily keeping abreast of the industry news, but it would also allow time for more in depth articles throughout the week for those who really want to know the details. Either way, the strongest aspect of Giant Bomb is the video content. The news should definitely be brought into that in it's own new format.

Welcome Patrick!

As for the way the news are delivered, I do enjoy some text-based news, but I feel like having him chime in during the News of the World segment through Skype or something along those lines would be great. I'd love to hear what all you guys think about those news, so... Maybe have a separate podcast altogether but I feel like this could end up being counter-productive for you?

Awesome. Welcome to Whiskey Media, Patrick. This can only be great for the site.

If a daily podcast about news wouldn't interfere with the bombcast or make things too hard on you guys I feel like that would be a cool addition to the site.

Patrick Klepek, nice! Also, I'm putting down a vote (of lesser importance, considering the fact that I do not subscribe [sorry!]) for a podcast. I love me some podcasts, and they allow me to listen to news and other stuff while performing various tasks at the same time. This means that I can garner the latest news items while remaining productive, and as such I'll be more up on the news of the day. So, personally, I'd like it to go that way. Not to mention that given Giantbomb's knack for creating podcasts, it'd be pretty entertaining/worthwhile to listen to as well.

I have no idea who the heck he is but welcome, he should deliver News while in a cube made of liquid nitrogen wearing flips flops and a kind of space cowboy hat, also he should be eating a chicken sandwich at all times.
But also be in the process of a kind of martial art that involves toasted mongoose and a sort of cocktail which is blue but also kinda red.

I have no idea what the fuck i just typed but thoses are my thoughts.

You need him on the live show for sure. I wouldn't mind him performing a Tim Tracyesque segment like in the gamespot days to deliver the news either. Whatever he does he needs to be involved in all the live stuff and other stuff whiskey media does because reading articles is fine and all but I like to be entertained as well as informed. That's why I come here.

If we're getting more and more news coming to the site, it would be cool to have a news and non-news section to the front page, 2 columns: one for each.  It seems like it would make separating the two a little easier straight from the front page, as opposed to going to separate destinations or trying to decipher one from the other on the main column.

I'm glad Patrick  Klepick is a part of the GB editorial team. I look forward to seeing his work on the site. As was pointed out well by Jeff  the quality of news is often lacking. If Patrick can bring some real news and insight that is great and will be much better than the regurgitated press releases and junk posts found on other sites.
