This Original Pitch For BioShock Is Bananas

Would you believe that, at one point, there was no Rapture in BioShock?

There is no water dripping off of this logo!
There is no water dripping off of this logo!
The only way to get your weekend started properly is to read old design documents and  pitches for the games you love. Thoughtfully, the folks over at Irrational Games have released part of the original game pitch for BioShock! It's a fascinating look at what BioShock was originally perceived as, especially since this pitch was created five years before the game was released. Oh yeah, and the game described in this pitch is wildly different from the BioShock released in 2007.

What changed in the five years between pitch and release? How about the fact that BioShock was originally not about Rapture? According to the pitch, there is no underwater city of any kind. Instead, BioShock was originally going to take place on an island, and you were sent to rescue a lady, but there's a cult on the island and genetic mutations extracted out of animals and weapon customization and...

Oh, who am I kidding? Stop reading this story and go to the Irrational site to check out the first part of the pitch document. Irrational will be releasing more of the pitch in the near future, complete with commentary from the developers involved with the game's design and production. You should read it! I want to read it again! I'm out! I got reading to do!

Here's a fraction of the pages from that BioShock pitch. Would you kindly go and read the rest?

Totally bananas! What do you think about the game that BioShock might have been?

i am realy glad they changed the things they did. it is now a much better and more flowing game . i think if they stuck to the island and religous theme that heavily, it would have worked against them. and the level of modding they wanted isnt vesible . but the pitch also shows what a bunch of pro's worked on bioshock  ! and how much effort and thought went into creating this game ! it was my first pitch i've ever seen for a game or movie.
realy cool !!!

Could be interesting but all that underwater city fiction turned out pretty good.

This is old news for anyone who actually followed BioShock's development and was excited for the game before the media told us to be excited about it.

I was so excited for a System Shock successor.

I thought Doctor Moreau too.
To everyone who likes System Shock 2, you should try out System Shock 1 also, it's actually a very good game. At least I like it.

wonder if they changed it because the pitch summary posted here sounds exactly like a little game called Far Cry more or less?

Pretty interesting how different it is compared to the Bioshock now. The original Bioshock sounded like a very daring game with a lot of big ideas.

This sounds good enough to become another franchise for Irrational to fall on if Bioshock doesn't live to their expectations.  I would definitely like to play as a deformed creature trying to return to the form of a human being.

I gotta say, the original pitch for Bioshock is indeed, wildly different. Would be pretty cool to have seen what could have been if they had stuck with it, but at least quite a few of those idea's made it into Bioshock. Not to mention that not all those idea's could have possible made it into the final product if they had done so.

irrational should just keep making bioshock but with a different concept each time. there could be the rapture bioshock, and then this weird island one, and then one on mars or something. think about it.

Very interesting read. I'll be honest though, the pitch sounds like it'd be more suited to my play style than the current bioshock. Sounds like a mental version of Far Cry.

I would love to see this game released, even if it's not the original idea. There are a few ideas I don't love, per se, but it's still sweet sounding.

You mean a rough idea of how the first game would have gone had the process of this lil thing called 'development' not interfered? Not a deep interesting story that compliments the first game? Yeah, sure. Makes perfect sense :/ "
What I mean is that I found Bioshock 2 had a suck-ass story and wasn't nearly as interesting as its predecessor, so yeah. This story sounds way cooler to me than what BS2 tried to do. "
I thought the story in the sequel furthered the legend of Rapture and its inhabitants pretty well. Especially considering what the first game left us with. "

Some of that stuff sounds bad ass. Maybe they'll incorporate it into a different game.
