Those Holding Out Hope for an Enslaved Sequel Might Want to Just Go Ahead and Stop Doing That

Ninja Theory makes it known that no sequel is planned, and it's unlikely we'll ever get one.

Video games, she is a harsh mistress, prone to the most fickle flights of fancy and a terrible temper. Which games succeed and fail seem to come about purely on some ethereal whim of which no one can possibly understand. At best, game makers can hope to accidentally catch the mistress in a good mood, or at least find fortune riding the waves of someone else's seemingly accidental popularity.

You're going to want to turn that smile upside down...
You're going to want to turn that smile upside down...

Such waves have oft-eluded UK developer Ninja Theory, who had such high hopes for their PlayStation 3 launch title Heavenly Sword, only to find themselves on the wrong end of profitability when all was said and done. Rather than simply farm themselves out for mercenary work, the studio went to bat again with another original, single-player exclusive adventure in the form of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. With a script penned by 28 Days Later... and Sunshine scribe Alex Garland, and a stellar lead performance from Andy Serkis, the game wowed critics and became a cult success among a small number of extremely ebullient fans.

All of that is wonderful, except for one small detail: hardly anyone bought it.

Perhaps that's a bit of an overstatement, as the title did sell around 730,000 total copies at retail. Those are hardly exceptional numbers, but they aren't the kind of tragicomic numbers a game like Shadows of the Damned did, either. Still, that number was a long way from what Ninja Theory needed, and as a result, the studio has had to abandon any and all hope of putting together a sequel for the title. Speaking to Edge magazine (as transcribed by CVG), studio co-founder Tameem Antoniades lamented the fact that he and his crew weren't working on a follow-up this very second.

"Enslaved should have done better," he told Edge. "Right now we should have been doing a sequel and perfecting that sequel and doing what franchises do, which is get better over time.

"[But] because that didn't happen we've not expanded to two teams like we intended to."

Instead, Ninja Theory is working on Capcom's upcoming Devil May Cry reboot, which, depending on your fondness for Dante and his whole stylish hard action thing, is either great news or a damnable tragedy. Regardless, Antoniades does see this upcoming project as "another chance," and seems quite happy about the work they've put in on it. Still, one can't help but feel a twinge of regret hearing a man explain that the potential of a new, original franchise was stopped dead in its tracks, leaving them to have to pick up someone else's franchise to stay afloat.

Then again, in this economy, work is work, I suppose.

Chiming in to say that yeah, Enslaved was fantastic, everyone should go play it if they haven't already, and the ending was totally fine.

Enslaved is maybe one of 3 videogames where I actually connected with the characters and gave a shit about what happened to them.

It has some mis-steps, and the action is a little flat, but the world, story and characters are all fantastic. Not to mention that it looks gorgeous.

Wish people had bought it.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West was such a good game!

The script was simply amazing and the setting absolutely astounding!!

R.I.P., Enslaved, you will be missed...

Enslaved was a great game mired by repetitive boring combat, that thought it was more complex than it actually was, coupled with phenomenal art direction and a well scripted and acted story. The room for improvement for a sequel, was most certainly there. It's very upsetting that they're dropping a sequel.

Then there's that giant crap-shoot that is DMC
It's true that internet rage is not a good barometer for sales... But... Seeing how it's been over a year and that rage has only minimally calmed down....

....Good luck Ninja Theory. I sincerely hope you know what you're doing.

Enslaved was a little rough around the edges but definitely really enjoyable. Loved the characters in that game.

Nah dude, Enslaved is the story of some bitch who holds a guy against his will and whines the entire game. And the guy she holds captive is a massive jerk, they are completliy unlikable and the whole but her family died! was unwarranted and stupid.

In Gow3 when shit goes down, it's one of the saddest moments I have ever seen in a video game, they talk a bunch of shit back and forth but at the end of the day they are all likeable, unlike enslaved.

I really liked Enslaved. Great story, great narrative, excellent graphics and a good combination of fighting and platforming. I'd have liked to see where they took the series, especially after the wildly different DLC.

Thank god. I game that doesn't need to be sequel-ized isn't getting one. Enslaved did some interesting things but it was ultimately just an average game.

"Enslaved should have done better."

If by "done better" he means been a better game, then sure. But selling better? Based on what? Enslaved had auto failure-proof platforming, minimal exploration, and combat as shallow as a kiddy pool. Granted, I did enjoy my time with it, but that's only because the characters were written and acted so well and placed against a story that was mildly interesting. Enslaved would have been an amazing CG animated film, but as a game it falls flat on its face.

I really enjoyed Enslaved, enough that after renting and playing it on PS3 I actually bought it on 360 and wrote my first GB user review. Along with Darksiders it wad one of the biggest surprises of 2010.

But I didn't expect it to sell well. It came out against stiff and much bigger competition. It should have come out in the doldrums of July or August. New and long lapsed IP have launched well against no competition in those periods (Deus Ex:HR, Borderlands, Arkham Asylum)

My thoughts exactly, though the relationship between Monkey and Trip was brilliant. I've little patience for a lof cut scenes in games these days, but I was riveted for every second of Enslaved.

730,000 is not that bad. I mean, what they don't realize, is if they have a following with the first, the second will probably be more successful, since people now know what the game is about.

Man, enslaved had its fair share of problems, but I still enjoyed the experience for the 30 bucks or so I paid for it. I'm actually surprised it sold as much as it did, with the severe lack of any hype and marketing behind the title.

This is sad news. I loved enslaved. I have beaten it a few times and had a lot of fun. I love the story and the world. I just picked up heavenly sword hoping to get that feel. I have not started it but I hope they put the same dedication/story righting onto all their games.

I have Enslaved but still have yet to play past the 3rd chapter or so. It was really great from what I tasted and plan to go back to it after this holiday rush.

Having said that... I don't think that this is necessarily a bad thing. Many of us complain about how this industry is driven by sequels, and then we get upset when a sequel doesn't get made. Ninja Theory seems to have a decent track record and have shown that they know how to develop a new and, at least critically, successful ip. I hope they go on to make another great one after whatever it is they're doing now; isn't it that new Devil May Cry (which, coincidentally, is a sequel that many fans are getting upset about)?

It had its flaws, but it was a great game. I LOVED the faces. Ninja Theory makes awesome face mocap tech which I think is better than LA Noire only because the eyes and bodies didn't look right in LA Noire. I played Heavenly Sword again and that game has better faces than most AAA games released today.

Enslaved was a massive letdown, the story was nowhere near as interesting as I had hoped and the gameplay was a huge step down from Heavenly Sword. Also terrible framerates throughout when the graphics aren't even especially decent just make me think the dev is incompetent.

Enslaved did far better than it deserved to, probably due in no small part to massive price cuts shortly after launch (and sustained more or less indefinitely thereafter). The kindest thing you can say about it is that it demonstrates possible value in tiered pricing for boxed releases, since clearly the market decided it was a £20 product.

And Ninja Theory should be grateful to still be in business; not many studios get to work on major properties after three successive failures.

I played Enslaved just for the story and great voice acting. I mean, that voice acting...man! The gameplay was alright apart from the combat getting a bit repetitive towards the end but I think it was a great ride. A sequal would be cool considering the ending, albeit a bit gloomy, but I think we all kinda saw this coming.

I was very sad seeing this, I loved Enslaved for what it was, and the problems it had could easily been fixed and improved on a sequel; it's one of those games where I just sigh and shake my head at how bad it sold, not only because it will give them no chance to deliver a sequel (maybe DmC will make them money to do so) but also because so many people wasted their money on Lords of Shadow (or lord of shadows or whatever it's called) and missing out on a unique involving story and a very interesting universe with rich characters and pretty damn fun gameplay; making up an epic campaign I think all gamers should experience; mainly because of story, but you can really appreciate the care being put into this underplayed, under-appreciated game from Ninja Theory, that kinda just flew under the radar for a lot of people.

people that were waiting for a enslaved sequel are the same that are waiting for a alpha protocol sequel, or a freedom fighters sequel (goddamn it :( ), or a vanquish sequel, or countless others, have no understanding of how the industry works basically. If it dont sell, its not geting a sequel people.

Also, Enslaved was pretty fucking cool :(
