Turns Out Metal Gear Solid 5 Talk Was a False Alarm

Publication with Hideo Kojima interview was happy to mislead the Internet.

Snake approves of this foreign drink, but probably doesn't approve of misleading his fans.
Snake approves of this foreign drink, but probably doesn't approve of misleading his fans.

Shame on you, Official PlayStation Magazine UK.

The publication teased a cover story with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima with a line about Metal Gear Solid 5, strongly implying he would be revealing the first details on the unannounced sequel within.

Turns out that’s not true, and OPM UK let the story linger the entire weekend before clearing the air. It doesn’t help that Konami didn’t issue its own clarification, instead telling me my request for comment was passed onto the UK division of the company, and nothing came back.

OPM UK published a more elaborate quote today:

“I think we’ll probably have to make it [MGS5] at some point, but what that will be, we have no idea,” he reportedly said. “As far as my involvement in the project is concerned, [it] probably won’t be as much as it was with MGS1--maybe I can do just one stage! For MGS1 I made the maps myself, laid out the enemy routes myself, did everything hands-on--that level I can’t do again.”

In other words, it’s not in active development, it’s not a real thing, and it was purely hypothetical conjecture on the part of Kojima--sorry, Koj. In other words, a complete non-story.

The result was an article on Giant Bomb that was misleading at best, a falsehood at worst. That’s embarrassing, and it’s why I barely ever run news that isn’t straight from the horse’s mouth or the result of my own eyes-on, ears-on reporting. And it’s why I’ll refrain from publishing anything from OPM UK again anytime soon. I’m not about to encourage what was purely link bait.

I linked to the new story from OPM UK only as proof of its existence. I’d encourage you not to click on it.

Wait a second, you're saying a UK gaming mag over hyped a choice quote to help sell their magazine? Stop the presses!

I don't know, it seems like this was a terrible case of jumping to conclusions.

"The latest ... Metal Gear Solid 5 details"

"openly discusses his plans for Metal Gear Solid 5"

It's easy to jump to "MGS5 CONFIRMED!" but if it was true, that would have been on the cover. Shame on OPM UK for being misleading but bigger shame on other sites for not knowing any better.

Interesting aside: There was a "war" between two German Nintendo magazines once, one was called Total! (which was independent of the English magazine with the same name), the other was called N-Zone. The N-Zone editors had the feeling that the Total!-editors had stolen their material for years, so they went and made up a fighting game and previewed it with mock screenshots and everything. And guess what: Total! fell for it hook, line and sinker. It was a major embarrassment and the beginning of the downfall for that magazine. Their counter-argument was cute: "Alright, we stole your shit, but making stuff up is eeeeevil!"

Feel free to draw your own conclusions.

Somewhere, David Hayter is surfing the internet, giving a quick shrug of his shoulders, and going back to writing a screenplay while he waits for his TOR and MGSHD cheques to roll in.

This turn of events is very appropriate for Kojima and the Metal Gear series. I for one am glad there isn't actually an MGS5 happening, MGS4 wrapped everything up, I mean it really did manage to wrap up some pretty obscure loose ends, so there really isn't anywhere to go, spin-off stuff like Metal Gear Solid: Rising makes a lot more sense.

It's unfortunate that the lesson learned wasn't to fact check articles before posting. The online journalism motto of Can retract? Don't check facts! is what allowed the industry as a whole to get played like a bunch of suckers and it will happen time and time again unless that principle changes.

Looks like they will say anything to get sales and readers these days, i haven't read a gaming mag in years as they just cant be up to date as much as online sites can be.

Yeah, video game websites can get bullshit rumours that haven't been fact checked or come from a reliable source out to the public WAY quicker than magazines. This is not personal attack Terranova at all, but too many people on here are way to forgiving of this. If it was IGN or something there'd be rabbid maniacs here declaring "IGN is teh ghey", but not here? All I'm saying is this "news" wasn't worth reporting on and this apology isn't even an apology... it's everybody else's fault apparently. Be a professional Patrick, check your stories or declare shit like this as "RUMOURS!!"... or better yet, wait 48 hours for it to be proven baseless lies.

And I'm not Official Xbox, Nintendo or PlayStation magazine fan AT ALL, but you can't blame someone for ASKING Kojima about MGS5. They did the story, they got the quote. They don't have to confirm or deny it to anyone, it's their story. It's up to the other "journalists" (ie Patrick) to CHECK THE FACTS. Not report them as fact and wait for them to be revealed later.

I signed up to applaud a games journalist, no less, for having the steel to apologise and admit that the original article posted was shit. Well done, it's a rarity.

As for OPM, well selling those rags in the year 2011 is hard work.

Props to Patrick for being totally up front about posting an inaccurate article.

It was totally poor form on the part of OPM UK to mislead people.

*facepalm...*

Hey, Pat... why not put the WHOLE QUOTE down and not pointing the finger at Kojima for being the misleading one? The best part of the quote was the end of it... here. I'll show you!

But that approach hasn’t worked before as he points out when talking about MGS4. “I intended to take it to a certain point and then hand it off, but that didn’t work, because it’s hard to convey the concept to other people then have them take the reins and carry on and preserve that vision.” His solution then is to not get involved at all. “That’s why it’s easier to have them come up with everything from the start and then take it to the end”.
