Ubisoft Responds to Assassin's Creed III Leaks by Just Up and Revealing its Cover Art [UPDATED]

After everybody already pretty much leaked the setting and protagonist of the publisher's latest time-travelling murder simulator, Ubisoft just reveals it all official like.

No Caption Provided

As you can see from the image on the side here, Assassin's Creed III's box art has officially been released by Ubisoft, and it confirms what everyone on the Internet has been buzzing about for the last couple of days: the lead character is of Native American descent, and the game takes place during the American Revolution.

All sorts of different art leaks had been popping up over the last day or two, some via a Best Buy employee posting promotional art sent to the store in anticipation of the reveal, and another via Game Informer's website (snagged by a NeoGAF user), which inadvertently posted a banner showing a new assassin holding a tomahawk and old-timey pistol against the backdrop of Washington crossing the Delaware.

And now we have confirmation of all of that. The lead character will be (at least partly) of Native American descent, and will be stabbing/shooting dudes against the backdrop of America's fight for independence. It's not that I hate the British or anything, but frankly, I'm quite looking forward to the notion of dropping a few tomahawks on a few Redcoat skulls. It'll be just like the movie The Patriot! Except with time travel. And without Mel Gibson. And maybe not horrible.

UPDATE: Game Informer just revealed their dual covers for their upcoming Assassin's Creed III cover story, which you can see and then begin picking apart for obscure details below.

Interesting bit of history, and would be nice to see it given some attention from the point of making a few aware what that war was really about. However, can't help but think they're pandering to a US audience a little bit. From a gameplay point of view Assassins creed should continue to have a major component of traversing and scaling amazing cities and buildings. In this period even New York isn't too interesting, and certainly no comparison to C16th Constantinople.... so seems an odd choice

The first two games were so daring, this seems conservative by comparison. But I have faith in them. There must be a way to make it work...

Like most people, I just hope they don't go the easy route and make the British the "Bad Guys" and the revolutionaries the "Good Guys."

I don't see why they wouldn't do that. Do people really think the British were really nice guys during that time or something? British colonies weren't some happy fun camps where the indigenous population thrived. The English were by all account "bad guys" throughout early history, unless exploitation for self benefit is ok all of a sudden.
If by indigenous population, you mean the Native Americans, almost all fought on the side of the British, not the Colonists. If you are talking about the white population of the colonies, it's worth pointing out that Canada was more than willing to stay with the crow for another century while in the 13 Colonies, estimates of the size of the Loyalist population is around a third of the total population.

Seriously, it's not like the Revolutionary War suddenly altered people on a genetic level and deleted their upbringing. They were, just a few years earlier, largely loyal subjects of the crown. So if the English were right bastards, then...well it's not exactly six degrees of separation here.

I'm referring to the fact that this will be a video game where there will be a good and a bad side. AC Revelations had very clearly defined good and bad guys despite neither party being completely guilt free in historical context. So people saying "I hope the British aren't portrayed as bad guys here that's bullshit!" are strange to me because that's exactly how I'd imagine it would pan out. From the American standpoint the colonists were the "good guys" that splintered off from the crown. Of course the term "Americans" is largely symbolical at that point in time since as you mention they were loyal British born and bred subjects. Since we are slowly moving towards the present and Desmond is American that just leads me to naturally assume the game would have you play as a third party, as the series always had, lending a helping hand to the colonists.

I'd assume the badguys are the Templars and their knowing or unknowing minions and accomplices. Given they pretty much own the US by the time of Desmond, I'd be just as likely be inclined to believe that the TEMPLARS are running the secessionist train to establish a completely independent political body.

Given what all the released artwork of the game are like thus far, I'd say the protagonist being on the side of the colonists is pretty much guaranteed.

I'm just going by this one here

Blue and Gold being an established color scheme for the Continental Army. Whereas the Brits, well you know...

Now maybe that guy is a traitor, spy, or about to be saved, but he looks not long for this world.

EDIT - Maybe a Hessian, though. The exact cut is beyond my knowledge of the times.

I understand the whole white hood thing is a trademark, but it's so out of place for the area, and nationality of the character.

That said, that is an awesome cover. Fuck that Redcoat!

Dude's gonna be after that Apple, you think he cares about some colonialist drama?

Altair was Syrian with italian ancestry, Still these games are all anti European, that's the people you kill the most and that's what i don't like about them.

AC1 was hardly anti-European. Yes, in the role of the main character, your primary targets were European crusaders and the like, because that's what makes sense in the story. No matter which side of history you stand on, the crusades were hardly a good thing. Altair had good reasons to want to defend his lands against the templars. But don't forget how that game ended. Don't forget what some of Altair's targets had to say with their dying breath. You arguably spend most of that game in the role of an anti-hero, led around by the final villain himself, who is of middle-eastern descent. The true enemy was never European and the game encouraged you to sympathize with your victims after you took them down. You do fight plenty of Europeans, but that doesn't make the game anti-European.

It's not like it makes any difference, anyway. It's never about war between nations. It's something much more significant than that.

As said in AC2; both templars and assassins are simply opposing forces, neither of them good or evil (they both kill to get what they want after all)
I hope AC3 fudges around with that show a 'dark side' of the assassins or some crazy shit

It would be weird if they made all Italians in AC2 multicultural with a mix of black, asian and white people wouldn't it?
Or what exactly are you saying here? You think European rulers have less chance to be corrupt and 'evil' then middle eastern ones?

It's still an appalling movie.  It's Braveheart in tails and cornish hats.  Mel Gibson likes to make flag waving dramas where he's the one to save us all.  As an Australian, I'm ashamed that Heath Ledger ever took part in it and I think so was he.
First time I watched it I was a kid and I absolutely loved the atmosphere and unfortunate story. I revisited it a few months ago and I think I puked.

I think it'll be great when Ubisoft finally complete their saga and bring it into modern day, revealing that the Apple's technology was eventually used to convince nigh-on everyone in the world to buy Apple products. And it's so obvious no one would believe that's really the case. I mean, think about it!

Just before anyone says anything, not hating on Apple/Macs. Just saying. ^-^

The Patriot is more historically accurate than the Assassins Creed games..

The AC games are pretty accurate actually. They take actual historical people and events and insert assassins and templars into it, a layer of fiction on top of history.

The assassins in AC1 are based on an actual group of assassins. They killed political leaders to change things how they saw fit. They wore white robes, with a red sash, they killed their targets in daytime, in front of a crowd. So that everyone knew they were the people behind it. Not to mention that every single one of the nine assassination targets was a real life historical figure, who died or disappeared during the summer that the game takes place.

Hell even Ezio is based off of a real person, though nearly nothing in known about him. There's one scene in AC 2 that has you defending Lorenzo de Medici during an assassination attempt during a church gathering. That event actually happened, in both real life and the game, Lorenzo lived and his brother died. The pazzi family were real.

So yeah, these games know their history. They take real historical fact, and fill all the cracks, the unknown things, with assassins and templars.

@Jaytow: None of the Assassin's Creed games so far have (at least as I see it) ever taken sides in the historical retelling.

They show the aggressors as pawns of the Templars, and (while still very stab-able) are not evil.

...Am I the only one that's confused by the strange amount of pride from both US and UK monetary units? Guy's you're playing (from what I understand) a Native American... the people who were slaughtered by UK folk, turned US citizens... I for one can't wait to potentially give the proverbial "it" to "The white devil" as it were... granted I would have rather gone to Asia if I'm honest.

@sandweed: no, my original post said that I hope its not just on the side of the revolutionaries. I'm sceptical cause of the giant ass American flag in that concept art. I think the native cultures deserve respect and it would be a shame if the devs just use the main character for nauseating American patriotism. That's not to say I'm against fighting for the Americans or that the British weren't assholes toward Natives I just hope it isn't so black and white.

with all this Animus business.

They have been building Adam

Sandler up all this time and yet again in the first part of the final conclusion

(because it’s likely they’ll do at least 2 or 3 more none numerical sequels

before assassins creed is done) He’s going to be taking a back seat again so we

can have another obscured history lesson.

I don't really like Desmond but that’s not really so much

his fault as it is the studios for not really doing much with him yet. They

could easily make him a likeable character by giving him a bit more exposure

and depth with a game that focussed on his journey.

And you know, I thought by this point he would say “Screw the

animus I nearly lost my mind in there. Nope! I’m good staying off my back and

doing some killing myself”

@jayperr: Ezio have 10 fingers.

Indeed, during the events of Assassins Creed 2 there is a conversation between Ezio and Leonardo about the hidden blade and the fact it was modified so that you wouldnt have to loose your finger any more. The branding on the finger they do at the initiation in brotherhood is symbolic of what their ancestors had to do.

He can't be 100% native. His dad must've been Italian.

Why not? Ezio is Desmonds ancestor, he doesn't necessarily have to be this guys too.

I think i might be excited about this and considering i just turned down buying revelations in the recent steam sale that's something I can be happy about. Finally I can get back to stabbing dudes in the face and neck!

FU Alex for dissing The Patriot.

Its a fucking appalling movie. Every part of it is terrible and its telling of 'history' is 99% pure bullshit. The war of Independence was to free the slaves? Fuck off.

Gen. Washington and I are going to murder the shit out of some Brits. Like UH. UH. UH. UH. UH.

Also, it'd be cool if the story provided some tension with the American settlers as well, given how the whole "treatment of natives" thing wasn't just puppy dogs and roses.

It's funny how American's are taught more about the British in relation to this time period than the actual British are. People love to acuse American's of glossing over the not-so-shiny patches of their past, but they're clearly not the only ones to be guilty of that.

@RollingZeppelin: Do we know that? You'd think the assassins have bigger concerns than wich privileged rich white dudes rule America.

I was hoping that the Assassin this time would be Metis and this was about the war of 1812. Now that would be bad ass.
