Valve, J.J. Abrams Want to Collaborate on Movies, Games

Who knows if anything actually happens, but Patrick is freaking out.

No Caption Provided

It’s an unwritten rule between Alex and I to avoid the most of the news about Hollywood picking the rights to produce movies based on video games, largely because they almost never happen.

That said, all bets are off when it comes to Paul Walker (Alex) and JJ Abrams (me). I'd apologize, except I'm not going to apologize.

Anyway, Valve founder Gabe Newell and director J.J. Abrams were part of a joint keynote this morning, the kickoff for the the D.I.C.E. Summit in Las Vegas this week (we aren't there, sadly). The duo revealed a mutual admiration for one another, and Abrams revealed he’d like to work with Valve on a game, and Valve would like to work with Abrams on possibly creating a Half-Life or Portal movie.

No real details were revealed, and it may only be aspirational between the two, at the moment.

The keynote was titled “Storytelling Across Platforms: Who Benefits Most, the Audience or the Player?”

The connection between Valve and Abrams isn’t completely new. An interactive teaser trailer for Abrams’ Spielbergian flick Super 8 was produced using Valve’s Source engine in 2011.

Oh please no. We don't need a Half-Life movie about how mysterious the aliens are.

The movie will only feature people getting face humped by headcrabs and sucked in to barnacles with an exception of the friendly alien creature.

Because that Star Trek reboot was pretty damn good

Assuming you don't really know/care what "Star Trek" is all about and only want to see it's surface elements skinned over a generic sci-fi action flick.

Bullshit. As someone who has watched all of TNG and most of DS9 I loved 2009's Star Trek and it definitely has some of the core principles of the franchise. The most important part of any story is its emotional core, and for Star Trek that tends to be self-sacrifice and friendship, two things the reboot was full of. Everything else is just the window dressing.

@Branthog: What endings are you even talking about? Has he even been involved in the endings of any of the TV shows he started? He didn't write the endings to any of those shows, and I don't know if he was even still involved at that point. You can't really judge him by his early work, so all you're really left with is MI3 and Super 8 which both had fine endings and Super 8 had a great last scene.

I call bullshit on your bullshit. Star Trek is about exploration and humanity reaching its zenith. Self-sacrifice is as common as water in any movie/TV show that is based around a crew/group of people.

Ugh. This, right here, is why we can't have nice things.

Things change. Abrams' Star Trek was a reboot, meaning no one cares what you think Star Trek is "about." This Star Trek was about something different. Just because something is different doesn't make it bad. If a filmmaker (or any artist) had to take into account that "oh, this part may anger some fans" or "this part isn't really in line with the source material", everything would suck and nothing creative would ever be made. It would just be iteration after iteration on the same basic ideas appeasing old fans and never trying to do anything new, which I'm sure many fans would be perfectly fine with. An artist should have a vision that is their own, not the vision of some people commenting on the internet.

If you didn't like Abrams' Star Trek, fine. That's okay. Personally, I thought it was fantastic. (that opening scene gets me every time) But to dismiss it on the fact that it's not what Star Trek is "about" is just short sighted.

Guess things will be like the original Unreal game where there will be even more lens flares all over the place. If the game is good then fine but not feeling like this will give much more than the average or less bunch of movie tie-in games.

I don't want a Portal movie but a half-Life movie could work if they don't make it about Gordon Freeman (who probably would be played by Bryan Cranston). Make it about, I dunno, just some freedom fighters in City 17. You can make your stupid lol-references (like, at some point somebody picks up a crowbar and says something like "what am I supposed to do with this piece of shit" and then grabs a gun or so. At some point somebody will mention a "mute nerd" or something stupid like this) but don't focus the main story on Gordon.

Whatever. The more promising a game movie seems the less likely it is that it actually comes out. So thats probably the last thing we hear about this (well, maybe in 5 years we hear about a change of directors or something like that)

So.....who's JJ Abrams? I've heard his name a lot recently, but have no idea what movies he's actually made.

Super 8, Mission Impossible 3, Star Trek, Cloverfield. All very solid, none outstanding. What you call workmanlike stuff. He's better known as a TV producer for Lost, Felicity, Alias, Person of Interest and a few others.

He's well regarded because he's reliable. I don't have a problem with that. The man is more... conservative with his stuff than I'd like, and I mean that from a political standpoint, mostly, all intuition and destiny and faith and very little intellect, but that's minor stuff and I don't object to his skill or craftmanship. Leave it to nerds to whine endlessly about good professionals doing cool stuff.

If they get edward norton to play Freeman and actually stick to the games plot (Obviously with some heavy modification to eliminate the purely-gameplay based sections) a half life movie could be excellent Post Apocalypse is big these days and a combine ruled earth could be interesting to see on the big screen.

First, can we stop sucking the dick of everyone in Hollywood, as if their form of entertainment is somehow superior and we have to learn from them?

Second, JJ Abrams is over-hyped and sucks at endings (thanks, but game writers can already write decent games with shit endings, as it is!). And trotting out his anecdote about the magic mystery box his dad gave him that he has never opened because the mystery is more meaningful than the truth ever could be in order to excuse his shit endings is a lame justification.

Third, JJ Abrams probably wants to do a lot of stuff. Saying so doesn't make it a reality and hopefully Gabe would show the wisdom to tap someone with more talent than fame to produce something of quality for them, rather than doing the "we paired up with a famous Hollywood guy because... whatever!". Abrams has done a couple decent movies, but most of what I have seen (especially Lost and Fringe) have had pretty poor final acts that followed a bunch of mumbo jumbo middles and beginnings that are totally deflated by the way the throw-away endings devalue them.

Let JJ Abrams do what he does - making decent movies and shitty television shows. If a collaboration is ever necessary, emphasis a search for talent rather than brand name value. When your'e Valve, you don't need the brand name assistance. You need the quality content creator.

you are making way more into this story than is actually there.

JJ Abrams and Gabe wants to collabo

Patrick really likes JJ Abrams

end of story.

Bleh. I never liked any of his stuff and the abortion that was the Star Trek remake put him near the top of my hate list when it comes to people making movies. Maybe this will be the first good thing he makes, but all this does is make me worry about not liking anything that comes from this.

@TheGorilla: Star Trek 2009 has nothing to say about ethics or morality. There is no dilemma about the use of technology or science, no commentary on the interplay of religion and science, nothing about equality or discrimination, no commentary on philosophy, culture, or humanism. 2009 is a black and white version of Star Trek with lens flare. It was an excellent action movie with a Sci Fi setting but it didn't have the things I love about Star Trek.

and almost all of it took place on or above Earth.

My thoughts exactly, Hollywood and company need to stay the fuck away from the games industry, unless it's truly to the benefit of the content.

Anytime there is bleed over, film industry people should be treated as humbled guests when collaborating on game content and not some fucking savior or star that is going to show us how to do it right.

I really hope this doesn't become a reality, I prefer Valve's Meet the Team series 10 to 1 over any of today's Hollywood dribble. Now if we were talking about 80s-90s Hollywood that might be different.

I disagree with the rest of your post as I actually like Abrams quite a bit (certainly more in movies than TV, but that's another story) but THIS has got to be in my top 5 pet peeves of the videogame industry. It makes us look like a little kid desperate for their big brother's attention and approval and it's PATHETIC.
