Wii Make the Music

Nintendo gives another demonstration of Wii Music, and we try out the drum controls.

I had more fun just jamming on the drums than I did actually playing a song.
I had more fun just jamming on the drums than I did actually playing a song.
One of the few live demonstrations given by Nintendo at its US press summit last week was of Wii Music, a product which hasn't drawn a particularly positive response from the gaming press, myself included, since its clanking, arhythmic showing at E3 2008. For as awkward as Wii Music looked then, two members of Nintendo's Treehouse team managed to show something that actually made a positive impression during the summit.

Sure, they were playing the Super Mario Bros. theme, and there were still some issues with the Wii remotes not always registering motion--an issue that was half-jokingly blamed on Wi-Fi interference--but there was some genuine improvisation during the song that made it seem like they were actually playing music, instead of playing with it. There were some instruments that, counter to every synthesized groan I've heard out of Wii Music so far, actually sounded good.

My newfound cautious optimism for Wii Music was rattled somewhat once I sat down with the game's drum controls afterwards. While much criticism has been leveled against Wii Music for a perceived lack of depth, the drums are a deep blue abyss compared to the other instruments, and I felt like I had been dropped in the middle of it. Between a Wii remote, nunchuk, and balance board, you've got a full drum kit sitting in front of you, something more full-featured and nuanced than anything I've seen from Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero: World Tour. The controls are velocity sensitive, and the balance board actually requires you to use both of your feet.

The catch is that you also have to hold down buttons or analog sticks or directional pads to access most of the kit, and I'm totally secure in admitting that it requires way more coordination than I personally possess to make a good-sounding beat with these controls. My attempt to play a reggae version of La Bamba made for a combination not unlike bleach and ammonium. Additionally, Wii Music provides no cues for the drummer beyond the basic tempo of the song, leaving it up to the player to figure it out. It's an incredible amount of freedom, but it also seems at odds with Nintendo's whole mantra of expanded market accessibility.

I saw some of the potential for Wii Music, but I also saw some of its limitations as well. I'll be very curious to see how that expanded market responds when it hits store shelves later this month.

Does anyone know if there is actually a game in there? Or is it just one big toy?

@ Chililililil - I too am getting like 5 PS3 games and the only Wii games that pique my interest are Disaster and Wario Land. But then why would I pick those games up at all when I could opt for Silent Hill at the end of the year (in Europe)?

wii music interest me none at all.  it just looks plain old boring.  guitar hero and rock band make you feel your in a band because you are playing lookalike instruments in a game friendly way. wii music features are mind bogglingly complicated and abstracted from real instruments by quite a distance.  im trying to figure out who it will appeal to at all?!

Yeah I'm buying several 360 games this winter, and there are some PS3 games that peak my interest coming out soon this winter as well. Wii though? Not really.

Hint: Don't look at the overall score but what the more reputable sources cited so far rate it.

Now you've done that, is this Silent Hill the game people want so badly for their other systems (and feel the need to point it out in this thread, as if it has anything to do with a given system's overall library) while acting like just released gems like De Blob  don't even exist in this world, since according to them great games don't and can't exist for the Wii? Thank you for playing.

I don' t think this game is meant for most of us here. Maybe we can be drummers if we have friends\family who want to play.
But the Wii is not for those who want the same thing we've been doing for the past 10 years.

I'm only excited about two games coming up: The Conduit (Wii), Mortal Kombat vs DC (360). The latter is mainly to play with the other member of the BBS I belong to.
And I will probably pick up Animal Crossing. Maybe twice, the second as a gift.

The drums seem to be completely counter-productive for Nintendo. Wii Music is suppose to be this casual game that everyone can play in the same vein as Wii Sports. And making the drums overly complicated is just going to piss people off and alienate the entire demographic that Nintendo is trying to reach in the first place.

Reggie recently said that they didn't show Wii Music justice at E3, as well as all that other crap the executives have been spouting  isn't going to help the situation. You knew E3 was gonna suck but you didn't put the effort into changing that. This is what happens when you make careless mistakes (like this games existance).

The drumming looks like a very interesting aspect of the game, really emulating the creative side of playing an instrument. However the idea of holding down buttons to access areas of the kit doesn't sound too good to me and I'm not sure about the depth of the other instruments in the game. But I'll still be keeping up with all the coverage on this game, it could be geuinely good.

I feel this game will be much like Daigasso Band Bros.. The main tilt of the game will be the band play.. I did not understand how the playing itself works..

The daigasso formular is simple.. You play several instruments with friends over Wlan.. Example : Fireemblem theme song P1 plays violin P2 plays harf P3 plays trumpet P4 plays plays drums

So what is the pro and cons compared to rockband..?
Pro
Daigasso has a lot of instruments.. Rockband has only guitar, bass, drums and vocals..
Con
The sound is not as good...

SO yeah i think wii music will be similar to daigasso. A lot of instruments (50 including dogs, cheer girls and famicom sounds) bad sound quality but a lot of fun with friends..

here is a link to a concept video of wii music

the bummer is the lack of an edit mode or downloadable content..

Daigasso DX had about 1600 songs you could download on your cart (up to 100 songs on one cart)

I still think this game is absolutely ridiculous.

And to the dude who went on some random wii defense below me, people said that no good games are coming out  this holiday season, not right now.  But using the new silent hill isn't a good defense at all. In fact, i don't even know how that's supposed to further prove your point. No good games are COMING (notice how this means coming in the future) to the wii this holiday season. Trying reading before having a fit over something that doesn't even matter..

My point is clear Hef, someone talked about having no reason to buy this or that game thanks to Silent Hill coming. That's a pretty bad game right there. That was my point. Maybe it's off topic, but talking about not wanting this or that Wii game in this thread or even dissing all the Wii has to offer is also off topic, and yet you're fine with that, how peculiar hmm? Besides, do you honestly think all the people dissing the Wii here bought every single good game on it, including De Blob? They can always buy it for the holidays, it's still stupid to chose a particular time frame and be all negative about a system over it. Oh no, PS3 had no good exclusive gaems last month but I got De Blob and Bomber Man Blast for the Wii and so the Wii rules and the PS3 is shite!!1! Lol?

You agree with him 100% but he supports the PS3 and you support the PC, lol. Fallout 3, LOL. Starcraft 2 coming when, lol, all we know is 2009 like many grand WIi titles such as Monster Hunter 3 and Mad World. Mirror's Edge does look good but it's also Ubisoft and you never know with them, just look how bad Splinter Cell or Assassin's Creed turned out. The PC is my main gaming platform but not thanks to crap like this or games we know little about.

I didn't see the silent hill post. So now I see why you would use that, and it makes sense.  I never said i had a problem with things being off topic though, so that doesn't really matter. And wipeout HD came out for PS3 last month, and I'd say that's comparable to Be Blob because they're both good games, not great.  All I was really trying to say was that you don't really need to go an defend the wii for no good reason because a) you're not going to convince any fanboys you're console it better and b) nintendo doesn't give two shits about you.  The only reason I have my name blue is because I play my PS3 the most, so thats my console "affinity'.

The hardcore isn't really loving this game, and to be honest, I'm not really sure the casual market's going to love it either.

Then again, it's Nintendo.  Of course it's going to be huge.

Lol, no, you can't agree "100%" when his point is that all the good games are on PS3 while your point is that all the good games are on PC. That's contradicting even if you both are against the Wii, you merely attempt to fix that by mentioning all the systems (except the Wii) now, which is laughable. You also mention laughable games like Fallout 3 (LOL, and you say I should be embarassed) and even though the guy you agree with spoke of the holidays you mention games coming during an unspecified date in 2009, allowing me to mention two of the many grand Wii 2009 games.
As for Monster Hunter 3, I certainly didn't embarass myself. The Monster Hunter series may be of an acquired taste (read: morons don't get the hang of it and trash it, much like anything they hate, like the Wii) but it always offers consistent quality and 3 looks like the best part by far. It's the series that (even while lacking the integral online aspect which makes a glorious return for the Wii) single handedly revived the PSP in Japan as a worthy DS competitor and has its fair share of fans in the US and EU. Claiming it's not worthy embarasses you, not myself, lol.
Mad World may not have an epic scope but I'd rather have a damn good and fun linear brawler like that, or even the 2D bliss of Oboro Muramasa YouTouden, or a quality beat em up like Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, a combat flight game like Sky Crawlers or hell, even the Endless Ocean sequel, than a game promising such an epic scope but failing to deliver anything of decent quality, much like your Oblivion (another embarassing game not worthy of bearing the RPG title) With Guns. Thank you for playing. Lol.
