Wii MotionPlus Hits Stores On June 8th

Wii Sports Resort also dated for release on June 26th.

Due to the glut of shovelware that greets me everytime I walk down the isles at Best Buy it's become hard for me to love my Wii as of late. Still, that's not stopping me from being a tad excited about the possibilities that the MotionPlus controller could offer. For those just getting up to speed the MotionPlus adds depth perception to the standard Wii Remote and potentially adds a lot more interactivity to the games controls. The device finally got dated this morning with a June 8th release date in a Nintendo press release.

Also on the release was a date for Wii Sports Resort which is basically a refresh of Wii Sports, but at the beach or something. That game, which also showcases the MotionPlus' new moves is set to hit shelves on July 28th. Unless I'm missing something on the Wii release calendar essentially you've got a fancy new $20 brick you can hold for almost two months till some games make use of the new peripheral. (edit: LordAndrew correctly points out Grand Slam Tennis, which comes out in June and makes use of the device)

It'll be curious to see how a secondary control does in the market. While peripherals have traditionally sold well on Nintendo's platform, those have mostly been shells or add-ons to the standard Wii Remote. With developers now given the choice of opening up more functionality to part of the Wii user-base it will be interesting to see if gamers that don't upgrade will become the bastard children of the populace.

Then again, will the majority of the Wii userbase even be aware of such functionality? I know it seems too easy, but there are an awful lot of results returned when I search for "Wii Grandma" over at the YouTubes

Ok, that was too easy. Now I feel guilty. I'm still excited for this thing... honest.

Nevermind. Upon closer inspection, there's so much wrong with that post, you should just rewrite all of it. Wii news deserve decent grammar, syntax, spelling and punctuation like any other topic, even when you try to pull insults out of the wrong end just for the hell of it. This isn't Kotaku.

If my opinion was presented outside the 1st person perspective I might agree with you. It's simply my opinion. There just isn't a whole lot that gets me excited these days on the Wii these days. I loved the system during it's first year but right now it seems more like a breeding ground for unabashed consumer baiting. With few exceptions, the system just doesn't seem to be targeted at a core gaming demo. There's nothing wrong with that per se, but Gian Bomb is, and hell if I'm not going to have a little fun at their expense on the matter.

But thanks for the typo corrections!

I'm interested to know what Giant Bomb thinks of the game coming out later this year for the Xbox 360 that will have a motion control. The company making it claims it will be better than Wii MotionPlus. The game bundled with the controller will be a game called Squeeballs. Any thoughts?

So, it's not yellow journalism because you used the first person? Lol? Unless you didn't mean that, but I don't see what else you have to disagree with my comment. And yes, what Meo and especially Endogene said too. You certainly had better examples to draw from with a few seconds of research on this very website's content (if you didn't want to get tired by browsing elsewhere), but you prefer to spend your time searching for YouTube grandmothers instead. Congratulations, whatever floats your boat. If you want corrections, you need to go back to school. I wrote three, but there are many, many more as my edit states. You need to rewrite all of it from scratch.

Alex, calm down. You see that video?  Thats the reason Nitendo is doing something like releasing this add on and the game that is supposed to show it off, two months apart.   I don't know why they would release it without Wii Sports 2.  They are counting on 1 third party game to get this to sell?  And two months?  I thought a week would be way too much but come on Nintendo, that shit better come with a demo disc or something for games that use it.
I am getting Wii Sports 2 but I am waiting for Tiger 10, that will be the game that makes the Wii Worth it.

What does the video have to do with this? The reason it's getting released earlier than the game, is to not shaft a large third party publisher like EA. Everyone was ready to condemn Nintendo for screwing EA over by "delaying" the peripheral despite the fact a date was not announced for it. Now they solve the issue in EA's favor and potentially to the expense of Wii Sports Resort sales (yeah, right, it will sell anyway), they're still the devil? But, I didn't even comment on that previously so I don't see how you're responding to me with all this.

Anyway, I said what I think, I'm done with this thread. Back to forum only discussions for me, actual articles here are apparently a huge waste of time for any Wii owner. Forum regulars (and I don't put myself among them) do a far better job in reporting related content (but you'll lose them one by one with this attitude). No, this doesn't mean Giant Bomb should report everything, but it does favor some fairly shitty news over important announcements, and now turns important announcements like this one into shitty news. Even those you'd consider trolls often have something nice to say when it comes to things like the Motion Plus possibilities (even if they say it should have been built-in from the start). They'd certainly be more informed than this guy in any case, and have some comment to make about EA's titles, about the situation with the rumoured delay, about what it may mean for Wii Sports Resort, for EA, for Nintendo's relationship with third parties, about anything but fucking grandmothers.

They'd also have better grammar, syntax, spelling and punctuation. My little sister could write a better post and our native language isn't English.

Snarcastic entry, you've been hanging out with Jeff. Tiger Woods 10 for the Wii will sell big for the golfing nuts. My online league has people ranging in age from 63 to 25 and they all know about MotionPlus. It's talked about on the EA forums as well. In Ryan's interview with Peter Moore, he states that Tiger Woods is the biggest selling EA game on the Wii. As for the Wii Sports casual crowd, if they want Wii Sports Resort, it comes bundled. I wouldn't call Wii Sports Resort a refresh or something as they have different games.

Alex, it was never Giant Bomb's intention to cover every single news story, and it's subjective whether they feel like it's worth reporting or not or if they're personally interested enough. Articles themselves have their own opinions in too for the most part. You should know that by now. When they do post a wii story you complain about it, and like you said a lot of the forum-goers post news which includes a lot of the smaller tidbits that they don't need to talk about themselves.

As for the motion plus, i'm interested in seeing where it will go. Wii Sports Resort will probably be like its predecessor, where i played it for a couple of hours on and off and it was neat it a sort of tech demo way, and then i'll be done with it for the most part. I have no real interest in tennis either.

Perhaps Al3xand3r's points are valid. I don't play consoles myself, and the Wii would certainly not be my first choice (more like fifth.)

A note on spelling. I can't resist quoting the last paragraph of Al3xand3r's very old blog:

"I hope this blog helped some of you Wii owners (or potential buyers) see there's little to worry about and that the future of Nintendo's console is looking very bright indeed, no matter what your gaming habbits may be. Game on! "

We all do it. So chill.

I don't do it when It's considered work. That's a blog post. It's not a published article. We don't all do it. And if we do it, it's not going to be done this extensively. You chill, instead of go through all my past blog posts or forum comments for spelling mistakes (and again, English isn't my native language) as if they somehow relate to a published article that is considered work. Lol, really.

Anyway, I'm discussing this here, come point out my spelling mistakes.

It's good to know I'm already approaching professional quality, judging by the OP. Maybe one day I'll be paid for it, and people will defend my right to rape their language and not mind I'm not a native speaker. Lol.

Al3x, I too think the Giant Bomb staff have a greater responsibility too keep their English clean than you and I. I was totally chillin', just couldn't help myself from a bit of creepy net stalking.

I think you did yourself a disfavour devoting such a large part of your first post to spelling, because what really upset you was the way this site reports news about the Wii. You clearly have a different opinion from most people here about what the Wii is all about. That's great. It's a possibilty for me to hear both sides.

No, he attacked Dave for having an opinion different than his and accused him of yellow journalism. Dave may not be a full-blown video game journalist but accusing a jouranlist of that is serious and is a huge insult to their integrity. Dave simply said that there was nothing on the system that got him excited lately. And I don't see what's wrong with that.

Looks like I did not interpreted his response in the same way you did, I actually don't know what yellow journalism is, thought it had something to do with the links being yellow (guess not, will look into it).

edit: I can see why Alexander would say that, the article indeed (initially) downplayed the release of motion plus by saying that there will be no games available for it for a while when there actually are some pretty high profile games coming out for it close after its launch. However it is pretty obvious that this is just a (sorry to say it Snide) misinformed and there for bad article and not "yellow journalism".

So you're saying this post doesn't put sensationalism over factual information (even if it does include some of the latter)? It doesn't employ lavish use of (moving, here) pictures for that purpose? It isn't controversial for the sake of attention grabbing? The actual news here, as important as they may be for Nintendo and even the whole industry of which Nintendo is a rather large part of, were turned into a mere excuse for another "Wii is a shovelware machine for grandmothers" statement. Nothing more. Ok, my accusation was false and out of line. Not.

Here's what yellow journalism is Endogene, obviously being a gaming website it doesn't involve forms of scare mongering since video games don't hold that much power over us, but you can decide for yourself if it can describe this (and other content around here) report or not. Note it doesn't have to include ALL of those elements to be described as such. I think it does fit in the category and I did not use the description lightly. Other websites like Kotaku live off of providing exactly that and nothing more, I'm hoping Giant Bomb won't become a clone, excuse my worries.

Or don't, I don't care. It was in the news tab, yet news were used as an excuse for other biased statements which we've heard too many times.

On the home page, these Giant Bomb articles are tabbed under 'commentary'.  So these articles will have some of the writer's opinions and not just straight facts. I wouldn't go as far as to call it yellow journalism just because it has a video which conveys the writer's opinion that casual Wii gamers will probably never buy the Wii MotionPlus.

The easiest way to settle this debate is this. These guys are not journalists, they stopped being journalists when they left their respective jobs, they were very public when the site started about announcing the fact they will talk about what they want, when they want, and how they want. You can hardly accuse them of yellow journalism.

I love the Wii's potential (which it is fast wasting), but give the guy a fucking break for stating that the Wii doesn't have him all that excited at the moment, even less so with all the multi-coloured (im british, ill spell fuck and you with the same u I put in colour) shat you're forced to browse through before getting to anything halfway purchasable on the Wii shelves, especially in anything not resembling a specialist games outlet. This is an opinion outlet, not a high temple of journalistic perfection (although imo these guys are ten times the journalists anyone from IGN, Kotaku or etc could ever be)

Besides, what the fuck do you gain by constantly linking to the Wiki definition of yellow journalism other than to shoot your own point in the face? Every piece of news this article could possibly contain is inside the title (which certainly isn't eye catchingly designed, it's a simple statement that gives all the required information) the rest of the article is to give people something to read, injected with a piece of the guys opinion. If you want a completely sterile reporting of just the hard facts, get a bullet-point summary of the days news sent to your email, or go somewhere that portends to do that in the first place.

Edit: As for the news itself... I want the Motion Plus to be used by a lot of developers, but the cold hard fact is that unless a huge portion of the audience buys it, not a huge amount of devs will embrace it, be a shame if it doesn't pick up though it gives the controller a huge amount more flexibility by the sounds of it.

So, going indie using your background's prestige means you can't be called yellow anymore? Sweet, what a deal. When they go to those game shows, do they introduce themselves as indie booze lovers, or as industry professionals like every other journalist, and like in the Help page?

Hmm, I don't see bundles, prices, and related titles in the headline, or regional release details. Maybe that could have been the bulk of the post instead of yet another Wii bash fest, how about that? How about some insightful commentary (I'm told it's in the commentary section, though I saw it in the news) about the effect this release may have to, well, anything related to it, from specific titles to the systems and companies involved? Hell, even though you agree with him, surely you must be getting tired of these posts yourself? I mean, not every Wii related topic has to include some form of the same statements, does it? Oh wait, you do it too (once again), so, of course you're not tired of it. Silly me. Carry on.

Bundles either don't exist, havn't been announced yet, or are decided in-store. The price is mentioned, and regional details don't matter a stuff to a primarily American website... I'd say all the necessary details are right there in the headline. You don't have to agree with the main bulk of the text if you don't want to, but for the most part if you're so offended by someones (perfectly legitimate) opinion, on a website designed solely for that purpose, maybe you should go elsewhere for your 'news' if you want it in flavorless variety.

"How about some insightful commentary"
I'd say pointing out the fact that a large amount of the userbase might not even be aware of the upgrade is pretty insightful to me, it's definately a standing point which could effect *shock* all those things you listed! I guess because you don't like it, that means it's not relevant?

Uh, get your facts straight before accepting grandmas that won't have heard of Motion Plus as a "large amount" of the Wii's audience. Besides, I guess you pretty much accept Nintendo got those people interested in a games console. What's so insightful in implying they won't be able to advertise the accessory just as well? They sure did well with Wii Fit, and that cost 5 times the price. Do you have inside information claiming their marketing departments lost their touch?  Do those people now spend all their time on the Wii so they won't be seeing the inevitable commercials? Or did they all end up in life support and can't play games anymore? Insightful indeed.

Yes because I must take everything that is said in an article at face value... /sarcasm.
Who the fuck do you think %60+ of the Wii's userbase is? It's people who havn't previously followed video games, or consoles, or sometimes even technology in general.
The only people immidietely aware of the impending MotionPlus is certainly not 100% of the userbase, not even close.

The point being made was that a large portion of the Wii's userbase are (as intended) new to video games, and/or casual, a large portion of which aren't going to be aware of the peripheral, and you could also argue another portion aren't going to care whether they know about it or not, I know enough people with the console and 3 or so games and they will never buy anything else again. (If you're so interested in facts, the Wii had the lowest attach rate of any console, 2.47 I think it was in 2008)

Edit: Now who's the one employing sensationalism? Take it somewhere else, cos it's bullshit. Besides, it's not too much of a stretch to work out why Wii Fit sold so well, i'll give you a clue, it involves the words "Fitness" and "craze".
