Overview
Blades of Exile is a shareware top-down turn-based RPG developed and published by Spiderweb Software for Windows PCs and Macintosh computers on December 1997.
A continuation of the Exile trilogy and built on Exile III: Ruined World, Blades of Exile features three shorter adventures (or "scenarios") and a fully-featured scenario editor. These scenarios can be played in any order, even with custom scenarios, with players able to keep their party's stats and inventory between scenarios.
The three included scenarios are set after the events of Exile III, can have multiple endings, and include:
- The Valley of Dying Things, an easier scenario where the adventurers are hired by the Empire to investigate a plague in the surface land of Skylark Vale. This scenario is included in the shareware version.
- A Mild Rebellion, a moderate scenario where the adventurers are brought to Morrow's Isle on the wild surface continent of Valorim in order to infiltrate a group of rebels known as the Hill Runners.
- The Za-Khazi Run, a harder scenario set in Exile where the adventurers have a limited amount of time to deliver supplies by boat to a besieged fortress.
Its source code was later released as open source on June 2007, and is the only game in the series to do so. Like the trilogy, it was made freeware sometime in 2013. It also received a remake in 2004, known as Blades of Avernum.
