Bravely Default, known in Japan as Bravely Default: For the Sequel, was released on December 5, 2013 in Japan, December 6 in Europe, and February 7, 2014 in North America. The game is an upgraded edition of the original Japanese exclusive Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, and supports Flying Fairy save data. Bravely Default's localization includes both Japanese and English voice-overs and text in Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, or Spanish.
Bravely Default is a turn-based RPG that intentionally evokes the gameplay of the earlier Final Fantasy games. It has a job system where the characters of the game can switch between jobs, giving them different abilities and stats. This system is most notably used in Final Fantasy V. The title Bravely Default takes it's name from the main gameplay mechanic of Braving and Defaulting. Instead of standard turn-based combat, the characters have battle points which allow them to 'Brave' where they take more than one turn at once (spending battle points) and they can 'Default' where they store up battle points by missing out a turn. As in most turn-based RPGs the character's gain experience to level up their stats.
The game features a soundtrack composed by Revo of the japanese band Sound Horizon. The soundtrack also features the Japanese singer Joelle Strother who had previously worked on the game Final Fantasy XIII-2.
With the release of the EU version of the game, it has come to light that Nintendo has made a number of changes to the game for undisclosed reasons. All of the playable characters have had their ages increased by three years, which brings the youngest, Edea, from fifteen years old to eighteen. Additionally, at least two outfits were changed significantly.
Bravely Default: Collector's Edition includes the Bravely Default game, an art book, a deck of 34 AR (augmented-reality) cards and an original soundtrack CD.
Every job has 14 experience levels to improve (these are separate from the characters' individual levels). The characters can also combine abilities from other jobs (for example, a White Mage can have a Black Mage's abilities as well as their own). Some jobs are classics from the Final Fantasy series (like White Mage and Knight) while others are new. The 24 jobs featured in Bravely Default are listed below.
