Brutal Legend review
A lot has been made of Brutal Legend not being what it is supposed to be. Many people thought it would be nothing but a hack and slash game. It turns out that Brutal Legend is much more than that and has some RTS elements in it as well.
Brutal Legend is about Eddie Riggs, a roadie who travels back in time to kill demons, fall in love and rock. The story is fairly simple but well written and the ending gives closure but is open enough for a sequel. Tim Schaefer's writing is good up until the last hour of the game, where it seems to taper off.
Over time, you meet many different inhabitants of this metal world and gather an army to rise up against Emperor Doviculus, you demon oppressor. You drive your car, the Deuce, and meet up with other factions to join your rock tour. When you meet the other army, a stage battle occurs. You have to protect your stage and tear their stage down, which is basically the same concept as any other RTS game. The RTS elements are fairly simple and too the point however. Playing defensively will not get you anywhere and if you do not go and help your army in combat they will lose. It's still a hack and slash game, you just have a lot of people helping you.
My only major complaint with Brutal Legend is the length. The game is very short if you do not do side missions, find different artifacts around the world, etc. I beat Brutal Legend first time in about seven hours.
Brutal Legend is well worth your time. If you are looking for something a little lighter to play, Brutal Legend is good fun.
