Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind is a side scrolling game which plays very similarly to the Mario and Sonic games of the time. In fact Bubsy was referred to as "the next Sonic the Hedgehog" in its promotion because it had so many similar mechanics to the Sonic games. The game has been credited to its very good environments and music that suites the environment, and also criticized for it's unashamed recreation -without surpassing- of the aforementioned platform game benchmarks. This title was among a rash of third party platform games trying to establish their own iconic anthropomorphism cartoon character.
Bubsy has two abilities 1. Jump and 2. Glide. Glide is initiated by bressing the A button and reduces Bubsy's downwards speed by 1/4. Also if you press glide before hitting certain objects Bubsy would be propelled much higher than normal. The objective of the game is to reach the end of stage with losing all your lives and reaching the time limit. Along the way Bubsy can collect yarnballs which contribute to your overall score and reach checkpoints through out the level. In the level the player will encounter lots of enemies which can be jumped on and would then kill the enemy. This could become challenging as the player has no health so once hurt you would lose a life and start from the previous checkpoint. The game is split up into 5 main worlds with 3 levels in each but after completion there is a final level in which the player must finish. The game environments include a forest world and a Wild-West world which also change the enemy character models to suit the environment. There is also a 2 player version which gives each player a single life to finish as much as possible in a level, then switches the other player after they either complete the level or lose a life.
The first Bubsy game released in 1993 by Accolade for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis systems. It began a surprising string of hits for the now forgotten bobcat.
