Overview

Char Aznable in Mobile Suit Gundam.

Char (pronounced "Shar") Aznable is a figure from the Universal Century timeline of the Gundam franchise. He appeared in the original Mobile Suit Gundam TV series, the sequel series Mobile Suit Z Gundam, and in the theatrical film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. Throughout the majority of the story, Char is an antagonist, first as a member of the Zeon forces in Mobile Suit Gundam, then as the leader of Neo Zeon in Char's Counterattack. In Z Gundam, he assumes the alias of Quattro Bajeena and becomes a political and military figure within the AEUG forces in their war against the Earth Federation and the corrupt Titan forces. However, Char is most known as the eternal rival of Mobile Suit Gundam protagonist Amuro Ray.

Char's original name is Casval Rem Deikun; he is the son of Zeon Zum Deikun, the founder of the independent Colony Republic who was assassinated by the Zabi family, who subsequently took power and renamed the nation the Principality of Zeon in his honor as a means to throw off suspicion. Though Char becomes an ace mobile suit pilot for Zeon, keeping his face hidden with a mask, he bears no love for the Zabi family. At the conclusion of the One Year War, he kills Kycilia Zabi, the last adult member of the Zabi family, and then disappears for a period of several years before resurfacing under his Quattro Bajeena alias.

As Quattro Bajeena, Char assists the AEUG and becomes a mentor to the young Newtype pilot Kamille Bidan. He also joins forces with his rival, Amuro Ray, as they both wish for the defeat of the Titans. In the final three-way battle between the AEUG, the Titans, and a Zeon faction led by Haman Karn, Char's mobile suit is destroyed and he is presumed dead. It isn't until years later that he resurfaces once more as the leader of Neo Zeon and enacts a plan to make Earth inhospitable to humans. In doing so, he intends to trigger a mass exodus into space, accelerating the evolution and acceptance of Newtypes. However, his plans are thwarted once again by Amuro. Char is presumed killed in the conflict once again and has yet to resurface.
