Since players do not share the same sense of touch or pain as their in-game counter-parts do, the concept of the damage flash is used to inform the player that they are receiving damage as well as the direction it is coming from. The direction the damage is coming from is often indicated by red flashes at the edges of the screen. Other games substitute this with a large red ring at the center of that screen the glows. Though somewhat different, the concept remains unchanged.
