Only tangentially related to the OP but if there's one thing I really love about the cult following for Dark Souls, it's their desire to draw as much fan art of Solaire in weird situations as possible.

12 minutes of Dark Souls II gameplay footage + Trailer
I really like Dark Souls. It is probably the best game of the gen. I doubt they can capture that magic again. Merely making a similar game will not leave such an impact. Curious what they do with it.
But aren't 2's supposed to always be the best? :D
Technically this would be 3. Demon's Souls Then Dark Souls. So to capture the magic a third time is where the challenge starts. 1 was awesome, 2 was great (not as good) but it helped bring hype to the name of Souls. Dark souls 2 might kill the series of how it is supposed to be unforgivable in your mistakes.

Wow.
Bring it on, Dark Souls II!
These are too amazing.
@metalsnakezero: There are more where that came from. :)
@golguin: Not sure why your gifs aren't animating.
So all you non-pussies out there are probably super excited.
fixed.
...or is it?
@immortalsaiyan: Impact is questionable (actually due to sales it will probably make a larger impact regardless); but if you've played the DLC you'll know they are still capable of better material than the main game of Dark Souls; Dark Souls is an extremely good game but it wasn't without its flaws, Four Kings, Iron Flesh and Fog Ring at launch, Crystal Ring Shield at launch, etc. Unlike something like Arkham Asylum or Uncharted 2 there is still room for improvement; that said a slightly worse game would still be fantastic.
i liked the npc in dark souls who sounded like an elephant he was above the blacksmith before the 2nd bell was rung in that temple place
As a recent convert to Dark Souls, I can't wait for more Dark Souls. I got over the whole "soul-crushingly difficult" thing (it's really not that hard, you just have to pay attention to what you're doing) and found a game with a huge, fascinating world and a fantastic sense of mystery. As much as I like the balls to the wall exposition style of something like Mass Effect (giant in-game codex with hours of lore), I think the shrouded, opaque nature of the fiction in Dark Souls is pretty great as well. Like, did anybody ever figure out who the hell the Furtive Pygmy was? Or what the Pendant is for?
Here's a new screenshot IGN just posted while promoting their gameplay reveal. Looks awesome!
At first I thought this was the Stray Demon.. looks kind of like him and the place where you face him.
I would like to play this game franchise but i am too scared of the game play, the story and setting/gameplay ideas seem really cool .
I was in your place, but it's not so bad. Once you get your first real weapon and kinda figure out a combat style that keeps you alive the longest (about 2 hours for me) things were a lot easier and were going quite smoothly. I guess you also learn to accept the fact that you die every two seconds.
The only thing I never got over was the controls, so I really hope there can be control customization. Also I really hoped they hired a UI/graphic design specialist, but then I remembered that those don't exist in Japan.

If Dark Souls 2 could get a UI upgrade on the level of Oblivion --> Skyrim, I would be a very happy camper. The current system is functional, but that's about all you can say for it.

This is true. I did not mean Dark Souls is perfect, just that I love what it does so much it's flaws seems really minor in the grand scheme of things. On top of the balance I did not like some of the later areas as much as the earlier ones. I loved how clever the level design was early on, and how well they were connected. Tomb of Giants was not up to that level. I agree with you on Arkham Asylum Asylum and Uncharted 2 being games practically without fault. But I do not like them as much. With Batman I would fault the Boss fights as it's one really minor blemish on an otherwise sublime game.
Per chance do you really like Super Meat Boy and Bayonetta?
So I finished Dark Souls for the first time very recently, should I get the DLC too?
Yes. It is very nice.
is the footage up yet :D?
2 more hours.
I just finished the demo and I'm happy that they didn't mess around with the core gameplay. The sword seemed to have a 3 hit animation on it, which I hope is an exclusive weapon thing and not combo based attacks from mashing the button. One button press should be 1 hit. I don't think you should have combo hits.
- Wind effects on foliage and clothing!
- Actual, unique dual wielding weapons animations!
- On top of that, the new animations are hella awesome
- Dark areas that aren't ass like Tomb of the Giants!
- All of the graphics. All of them.
- Turtle knight that's all like "I know you're backstab shit GTFO" and then crushes you if you try to backstab him is like my new favorite anything
- oh my god that dragon castle scene ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I want this game right now. I'm probably going to wind up buying this game twice too, just like I did with Dark Souls 1. fuuuuuuuck
That scene with the long ropebridge with the wyverns, and the big ass castle up in the distance. Fantasy nerdgasm.
Them mentioning trial and error gameplay could be worrysome, but from the footage I think (and hope) they just mean a similar setup as in Dark Souls 1 where you can actually survive trials in one go if you pay attention and be careful.
Can't wait for this game to come out, Dark Souls is my favorite game of all time.

That was indeed really awesome.

From what I noticed of that torture chamber scene with the hell chariot, there were blood stain skid marks on the ground on the path the chariot followed, with enough space to completely avoid it on the left side of the screen. So yes, like Dark Souls 1.

There are already several weapons in Dark Souls that have combo-attacks like that.
As for what they showed. I love that they seem to have made dual-weilding a thing, although the combat seems faster (might just be my mind playing tricks on me) which could alter the game quite a bit. Not a big fan of the effects in the new engine, but I guess that's probably still under development. No Havok is great though. I'm really curious about the moon-sign next to your bars, but they wouldn't talk about it in the QA. Parts of it seemed very much like "we're making a sequel, so we added this and that". They said Estus would remain so hopefully the healing drops are just a demo thing, as a re-introduction of farmable healing items would not be great (yes, you could use humanity, but....)
Overall it didn't quite live up to my expectations, but they were probably unrealistically high anyways.

My expectations are pretty weird. I would be happy with pretty much the exact same mechanics and gameplay, just give me a new awesome and dangerous world to play in with new weapons and armor. Any changes they make to the core gameplay are inherently scary to me. On the other hand, who knows, those changes could make this game even better.
Looks pretty good from what they showed here. Very similar to the other Souls games only with better graphics. I'm curious about how the online will work but I guess they are still working on that. Looks like I wont be disappointed with this game from what I have seen here. Cant wait.
